  1. Either I messed up something or the volt mod is not compatible with the LCD mod. When the Lynx is on battery, all seems OK. But when I'm using AC adapter (original Atari), the initial title screen comes up fine then the main game screen turns gibberish, LED power light dims, then it crashes and shuts off. I have already double checked for problem like loose wire, leftover bits like clipped wires or solder blobs, etc. Nothing stands out. The battery does not have any diode that protects against reverse voltage (according to schematic, the one diode on -v is bypassed when power plug is not inserted) and the volt mod has only a diode on +v from power to regulator. I will need to recheck that diode. I'd spend more time checking (both that suspect diode and the AC adapter, it is old and could be dying) but I spent over 4 hours recapping TG-16, adding S-Video to it, recapping one of my older Game Gear, and recapping one of non-modded Lynx to try and restore dead sound.
  2. Genesis +1 you can add Power Base Converter or its clones to play most of SMS games. Some good SMS games. Did you know if you get some flash cart, you could play Genesis and SMS without needing adapter.
  3. Zelda had a big change from overhead game style to side scrolling combat with experience system. It's like someone took a random adventure-RPG game, changed graphics to match Zelda characters, and called it Zelda II.
  4. Anything that was out before I was able to drink beer legally is retro to me. So pretty much everything up to 16-bits era.
  5. qft. Other game consoles didn't use "zero force insertion" design and they rarely suffered from problem. I think it's because on most systems, there's rubbing action that breaks up oxidation and dirt while on NES console, there's no rubbing so nothing clears the connector.
  6. I've thought about using such connector but I wanted one that's keyed. If I can find cheap HDMI port, Playstation video port, or something small with many pins.
  7. Probably not. If someone could take a modded Lynx back in time and showed them what the future held, it would really blow them away. A lot of improvement in 25 years since that old color LCD was used. If someone told them the new LCD was done by a single person as a DIY aftermarket upgrade, it'd blow them even more. Did we have standard VGA monitor back then? I can only remember EGA at best and those aren't VGA capable.
  8. "It's just a coupe" and some of them have sold for hundred thousand dollars on auto auctions. Some people just got to collect em all.
  9. Use file sharing site like Dropbox and make it public, anyone can get your combined PDF.
  10. Great design!! Printing the mini version of original boxes for the case cover. I may have to upgrade my old Lynx bag, it's not big enough to hold around 70 cases.
  11. Wow those are great! I have never gotten far in Gauntlet because of piss poor viewing angle on original Lynx screen when it's rotated 90 degree, which made it rather hard to watch for everything and not get killed. With new LCD mod, it is so much easier to see I just may have to see if I can finish what I started 25 years ago.
  12. Same. GSP seems to be ok for noob seller or seller who are too lazy to fill out a few words on custom form and go stand in line at post office for proper postage. But I've shipped internationally before and it seems a lot less hassle than GSP in the long run.
  13. Cool!!! I have the iCade and I wanted to convert it to a mini arcade with PCE console and Turbo ED installed. I do need a new PCE, the one I had released magic smoke when I tried to composite mod (original PCE didn't have any output except for RF) and I think I shorted something.
  14. I think you may have to open up and check the traces from the control switch and button pads to the shift register IC and figure out which traces are for which function. Ignore the rapid fire option until you get the main part working. Slo mo probably won't work as most older game system didn't have convenient pause feature on the controller. I would look at mine but it's been missing. I had 3 CIB Advantage controllers and 2 loose along with few NES games and a couple NES decks that went missing a few years ago. Either I put them somewhere I still haven't figured where yet or they were stolen.
  15. You say you have 0 ohm on every address. Did you check if there's accidental short between address lines? Say for example, A8 and A9 should be infinity but if it is not off scale high, you might have a bridge or a bad connection somewhere. I would assume data lines are fine since you saw 00000 on screen briefly before it crashed. That suggests the data lines are working at certain address range.
  16. Get a picture of your board, both sides. Maybe we can spot a mistake you overlooked? Making EPROM board out of old 2600 board is easy to do since most of the pins are correct.
  17. I've used Itead before, they always delivered exactly what I submitted so any error is usually my fault and not theirs. The turnaround time is usually 2-3 weeks from submission and payment before I get them in my hands. USA has loose custom so shipment to other countries may take longer
  18. Or we could see if someone can make Batari-esque system for Lynx and let us code in BASIC equivalent.

    Lynx Multi Cart

But can you play XBox on a bus?
  20. The actual regulating is done further down the chain, at zener diode. It's supposed to dump excess voltage to ground while maintaining 5v across the spot. (seems like inefficient design BTW unless I misread schematic) If the diode or resistor failed, you won't get 5v regulation. I'm almost afraid to ask, does your Lynx still work with 6v power? If so, you're lucky. Many component usually fries easily when you dump 9v due to failed volt regulator.

    Lynx Multi Cart

AFAIK none of the Lynx comlinked game shares one display. Each player has their own display. So you will need LCD mod for each Lynx and separate VGA monitor each. There is one theoretical possibility: if you know of a video multiplexor that takes multiple video input and display them on one screen it could be used for Lynx. Those are commonly used for CCTV to show multiple security camera onto one display for easier monitoring. I don't know if there are VGA muxer or if you would need multiple VGA to composite converter for each Lynx. Get a nice 100" LCD display and a 9-ways muxer and everyone can see up to 8 players at once (most are 2-4 players, one can do 8 players but theoretically Lynx can have unlimited players due to design of the cable but realistically the lag will kill massive multi-Lynx network)
  22. All Lynx 1? I remember when reading through Candle's LCD work that a few Lynx 1 had soldered on LCD rather than easy connector which would mean some work to remove the old LCD. I haven't had any Lynx 1 to take apart so I can't be sure.
  23. A really nice old school type RPG game like Ultima (U3-U5) early Dragon Warriors/Quest, first few Final Fantasy games for example. Some of the RPG games could probably be ported as early graphics were simple enough. Sound OTOH and actual game code would take more time.
  24. I got the parts in the mail yesterday so I took the time to do a mod one of my Lynx. It worked. I was playing Blue Lightning off AC power and I didn't notice any unusual warm up or other issue that may indicate a need for heat sink. The tiny regulator is more efficient than a more common (and cheaper) 7805 regulator but it is rather small. It's hard enough safely removing a few SMD parts without ripping up pads or traces that trying to solder in one (upside down too) needs a fair amount of patience. Still 3 more to mod, 4 if I can find my dead Lynx (busted transformer) for second LCD replacement. Yeah my bad. I was looking at the schematic and I forgot for a moment that the battery connects *after* where the 5v regulator would be installed when one wants it *before* the regulator.
