Intellivision HSC Season 14 - Game 14 - Defender
Gernot replied to Rickster8's topic in Intellivision High Score Club
Which i tried yesterday and noticed that i'm shit. A shame for a former plumber... (yes that didn't looks like a plumber rather like a chemist but my profession textile technician hasn't let me earn much money, less as a helper on the construction site). A shame for a former plumber even that i'm completely unable to play DK well - in and over all the decades i never was good in this game. -

Cough then try Soccer (any release of) which i mentioned and tell me if that works for you (you have to make at least one goal to provoke the error, a working title screen tells nothing some errors appear only in gameplay under a given condition, in case for soccer it is the first goal either one team makes) True this i noticed to jzIntv lags a bit in controller inputs. Besides "old" won't matter and i'm not sure but i feel izIntv ran as good if not better in win XP as in win10. Not the proper topic here but i can post here the errors of MAME (i did so a couple of years ago for MESS which is the same engine). However as a proud owner of a 40 year old oldtimer i prefer anyway to play on this oldtimer instead to play emulated. Playing emulated is for a competition just a little more fair since the PAL machine has only 83% of speed (100/60*50~83%), if you remember my astrosmash score which is "out of competition", if i don't get tired i could play it for hours... it's to slow on the PAL Inty. And btw. how you start the few Atari games is unimportant there is only on hardness/speed setting the common 3,2,1,DISC speed selection is bypassed by them. But a play on my machine would equal roughly to a start with [1] (speed 3). I will measure what is the exact difference for 10 "intellivision minutes" to count. My next screenshot will be from a play in MAME just because of. -

MESS was a mess, but Mame is even worse (you have to split the roms and can't pick a rom as easy as in MESS), both leak extreme for the Intellivision many games won't run, i.e. all Soccer games will hang after the first goal, Space Patrol does not work (The vehicle collides before the game starts), Ms. Pac Man does not, D.K. Arcade has garbled graphics, many other have wrong and garbled graphics (even if you pick and run the ROM instead of the installed and split up to memory banks binaries, worst i feel is the soccer error this is a basic basic basic intellivision game and if this did not run the emulator is simply shit in my humble opinion, that homebrews and new releases won't run proper i can understand but that a game like soccer fails is not acceptable) Nostalgia was the emulator of my choice for years before i fumbled around with jzIntv or even worse MESS/MAME. There are a few reasons to emulate the Inty in MAME (MESS is not further developed), foremost one it is the only one running "Stack 'Em" proper (in despite of all who fail to run proper). It allows me to play "AD&D Tower of Mystery" because i can save each level and avoid sudden crashes (a save and reload will remove dead ends even) by this which makes this Prototype playable then. But i guess to run jzIntv in the jzIntv GUI is as easy as to setup Nostalgia picking games is as well straightforward because they will be alphabetical sorted in branches. + easy to install + easy to pick games and alter settings (per session) + jzIntv supports custom controller setups + supports (reads) sub level directories of the selected ROM directory (allows to sort your ROM directory i.e. by developers and/or themes). + shows the commandline string, allows to add custom (by the GUI not shown) options to it. - no images, no manuals, no overlays - simple "oldschool" GUI. If one likes to display box images and overlays "Weeds" jzIntv launcher comes at hand, it's a bit complicated to install (it expects to make all settings in one try if something isn't as it pleases you have to repeat the whole procedure (it's possible to edit the launcher.ini) but else a good alternative to Nostalgia. + displays images and manuals ++Weeds++ this is a plus - really (from SimCity2k over Intellivision to DOOM - everywere this dude is present with some fantastic work). - cannot handle custom image naming like Nostalgia - plays the BurgerTime! jingle until you get nausea (can be replaced with an empty file named "burgertime intro.mid" or any other midi named as, i use a classical piano midi which doesn't strain my nerves). finally the Horror method - create batch proggies and run the game like a "real game" from a nice icon, keeps the emulator hidden, shows all artwork and whatever manuals, ester eggs or whatever of custom notes to the game you play (i.e. the nice pdf manuals). + personalized Intellivision - takes months to install - is complicated as hell Sure you can stay with Nostalgia, i see no reason why not. The older release of Nostalgia allows to load a custom palette, if you alter the foreground set slightly from the background set you can "cheat" certain games, e.g. if the green differs a little AD&D will show the path of the dungeons before you walk through. Back to topic i played two rounds of defender and it didn't turned out as bad as i expected. -

I like space shooters (obviousely i have to) but i always disliked the hardness of this game especially as coin-op but even the inty release is hard. But i see i still have time to try to beat 5'000 points more i can't expect of me i guess. Sure i liked the game and i can't tell how many SFr. ($) it swallowed. But let's see what i can reach on my 83% speed PAL Inty in comparison to a play on jzIntv. Btw am i right, jblenkle played it on Nostalgia, does really someone still use it except of me (occasionally)? -
Sir (Intelligentleman) this is something of the best (your hacking in general), because i haven't visited this forum since at least two years. --- "Moonsweeper" ts...

it isn't but i can't tell if it still works i haven't tested it but it would be a sneeze. further italy isn't 1000 miles away from my home. -
what would we do without the zero? nil. it's really an interesting item. but what is so aesthetic? the arabic labelling? hmm... i know my ex hated me for such (for those who didn't know it i was married to a muslima) BUT TAKE THIS SENTENCE IN LATIN LETTERS AND COVER IT TO 3/4 AND IT'S STILL READABLE.

one mustn't like it (replays) Speed isn't exactly what it leaks of i guess, at least i played wc soccer often in 1.5x speed (double is to much because of the scrolling) but returned to single speed. It's not harder it's easier to play, that sounds maybe contradictary but that's what i experienced. Of course i still feel it could be faster, but this "slowness" has some influence on hardness. It lowers unfortunately the attractivity of the game when you feel you wade in mud. also i'm not sure if real soccer really got faster? sometimes i feel they play table soccer. but let's see i'm curious and will watch a few old matches -
I'm still not sure if it's clever to post it here, it's a little bit off topic. But it's made to honor the Intellivision. It's not the only Mod which i dedicated to the Intellivision but my most recent one.

i know i'm easy to please - i even like a senso.

looks like one of the games which i can't play because of laughter. cool, does it need to be a creature? i like the square. what about a timer or counter for the platforms this would force you a little (while i'm shit already without such). in general i like those small games for which you need fine motor skills. it differs so much to "let play" i wrote already that a small boy watched me playing flapee bird he was fascinated, i guess this will work the same.

can you explain this a little more, where exactly is the difference? i never noticed one but that didn't means there would be no, sometimes i'm blind like a groundhog. true imho it was underrated already in the '80s, to see the "pimples" sells unfortunatly better. -
makes me feel like i'm a real proletarian but i don't mind - i am.

you guys live all in such neat places

the mentioned cold solderings in the other thread are something i always look for at very first, this is a very common reason for many broken electronic devices especially for the hole through technique. the pcb is bathed in solder and sometimes it failed, a test might not show it but a use. simply because to solder any metal needs that the workpiece is heatened up and then you add the solder, to bath it is not quite right but effective. however that's still better as to glue them, when i dismantled my boombox because it didn't worked anymore i noticed a quite heavy piece of graphite glued with something that i would call gun-gum on the pcb. no wonder it simply fell off on a sunny day it's made for this purpose hmmm.... gun-gum is the wrong term, gun-gum is to stand heat, it's sticky and like tar when it's cold and simply hardens with heat, used to fix nah i wouldn't say guns but exhausts of any sort.

obviousely this differs even from my PAL inty i guess the hint on the RCA cartridges is a quite good one to get rid of corrosion remnants, use a rubber from a pencil. isopropyl alcohol is good to clean off fat and dust, but it can't erase corrosion, of course a rubber is abrasive but it's still better as corroded contacts, one could use a glass fibre brush, but they are even more abrasive, so i think this quite old advice is quite good. to be honest how careless i am and ever was with my electronic devices, corrosion was never a reason. ok i don't sweat much, i remeber i had a teacher who just had to look at steel or copper and it started to corrode, in fact he had always wet hands. while hmmm... mine was mostly greasy or heavy colored (so called working diseases or working class disease?).

vote for the game you would like to see on intellivision
Gernot replied to vprette's topic in Intellivision / Aquarius
right on commander the hardware limited it somewhat, if not much. but neither i liked to point on emulating obscure systems, i just liked to say, to stay with my elite example, that this game is to play on any machine quite the same no matter for which or on what hardware it was written. with all the love the devs put in their work here any game will be better or at least as good as the original, there is no one who forces them to finish it in a given timespan. except the players and collectors of course. what we use to develop them nowadays plays a quite important role to, it wasn't to dream of i guess. but you are right "originals" are certainly better, but well do you have such an original game idea? most is already occupied, not much which is really new can be thought of. and why not remake the arcade classics for the inty? it leaked of this for a long time. many games which has been output shows that the system is capable to run quite good arcade adaptions. i only need a time machine now to show my comrades from back then how good the inty can be, if the matter is coin-op. so yep, start at top of the list and work it out to it's bottom line, any of the games is good. -

i never will forget the moment my mother saw the running man for the first time and of course it was soccer. she was totally excited that such is possible at all and that it runs so smoothly over the screen, almost like real. -

just a thought what do you think about super pro decathlon? i never played it in my youth but it's imo a very good sports game. i'm not yet good in it and rant often about the controls, but i think overall it's even better as "hyper olympics". the "feel" and that's what i often point on is completely different with the blocky but smooth animation. same here why i disliked soccer games a long time, they was sprite based and poor animated, mostly. and of course the 16 directional control was important as well i don't need to count how many pimples my player has in his face, that didn't makes a game better.
