Okay so I didn't realize there'd be this much push back against it.
Honestly? I liked the $15 price cause it's a lot cheaper than most "ported/remake" games get. This is cheaper and easier than getting the actual physical games on their original consoles as well.
I mean... If you are going to wait for a weird digital version of this otherwise, you might as well just emulate it and not bother purchasing it.

I wasn't going to share this as it ended up being not quite as good a deal as I originally thought.... but I figured why not!
The games and keyboard were $5. The Mario soundtrack was like $2.50.
Keyboard works, but it's missing the wireless USB adapter. Luckily, Logitech uses a single type receiver for a majority of their items now so I can order a replacement one.
The Incredible Hulk works, but it seems spotty... Unsure if 360 just doesn't like it or the enormous number of scratches on disc are the problem.
The Sims Deluxe Edition is lacking more than I thought it was. (I checked inside and thought it had most of it.) It has 2 Sims 2 discs and Disc 2 of the Sims Deluxe... So it's basically useless to me. -_-
LUCKILY! The Super Mario Galaxy Official Soundtrack appears complete, and the disc appears in good condition. I'll have to rip it when I get a moment. That was the one upside during my visit unfortunately. lol

Picture quality is fine, it processes the video correctly (no added lag), gives you a couple of optional settings to play around with (scanline filter and smoothing filter), and supports composite video, s-video, and component video.
I was thinking of going the Retrotink Mini, but yeah the more I think about it the more I figure it's probably worth the extra cost to get component as well~
3 hours ago, Atariboy said:The Pixel FX Morph also looks pretty good and is planned to be only $50 more. And potentially of use for people is that it has a HDMI input (Handy say for the GameCube with a GCVideo based HDMI dongle) and a VGA input.
I'm happy waiting and seeing, although I suspect the Retrotink 5X Pro will be where I put my money.
Pixel FX Morph? Never heard of that... I'll have to check into it. <_<

The RAD2x cables are basically "mini Retrotinks" in a cable. If you are thinking you'd want to connect more than one system, I'd recommend just going with a single Retrotink unit as it will end up being cheaper in the long run than buying individual RAD2x cables for each system.
The HDRetrovision cables are excellently made, but they are neither upscalers nor line doublers so there is only so much they can do.
Well that's disappointing (sorta) to hear about the RAD2x cables, but that at least takes them out of the running. (Also they've been out of stock for a while...) Also glad you confirmed on the HDRetrovision cables!
Seems like a Retrotink is the way to go!

Actually maybe not, I remember returning a hyperkin one, so i think they are all levelhike. They were fine. Colors seem a little off on all of them. Ever since I got back into CRT's (im up to three of them now!) I can't go back to playing old games on HD flatscreens anymore where everything seems so flat and lifeless even with expensive scalers and such. With CRT's it feels like actual meat on the bones and new televisions just seem lifeless and skeletal.
Yeah, I have one of the POUND technology cables for the PS1. It gets the job done, but it's not very good.
I'm mostly trying to decide if I want to buy a few of the higher end cables like HDRetrovision or RAD2x or if I should go for one of the Retrotink adapters that handle it all but with one interface.
-
I used to have a Framemeister back in the day, but I got out of the game. Also I have a fancy pair of CRTs for that classic gaming!
That being said!... What would the collective in this thread suggest as a good singular item (or multi cable if better) for an occasional want/need to plug an old console into a modern HDTV?
It would most likely be either PS1 and SNES. Maaaybe a GameCube.
I have tried the PS1 HDMI cable, but it's meh. Last I checked, the HDRetrovision cable won't work with my TV. (Sad boosh...)

I'm willing to work with you on the cost of shipping. I know it's gonna easily be $35-40, but I'm willing to cover part of the cost if this helps get it to someone who can/will genuinely use the box.

I actually have 1 or 2 half-height GPUs (relatively older ones) that I could throw in these PCs. It's definitely a thought.

1 hour ago, glazball said:Someone mentioned in another thread that with the closing of the PS3 store, patches will no longer be available to download for PS3 games. That's not my understanding - just that purchases will no longer be available.
Can anyone confirm?
TL;DR version - You will still be able to play online and do downloads.
From what I can tell, the only thing we're losing when the PS3/PSP/PSVita store goes is the ability to purchase NEW digital content. It doesn't affect any digital content you already own. Beyond that, I don't remember ever having to go online to the store to get patches. They also don't seem to be removing any sort of online capability.
You should still be able to download your games along with any patches needed for said games. This feature was always just on the dashboard. Granted, if they ever remove the PlayStation Network from it, we might be screwed at that point...
I'll go ahead and link the full announcement on Sony's site on this thread as well.

Dunno if I've missed something or what but now all I get is a black screen of doom on PS2 and PSP titles. Doesn't even reach the BIOS screen. Previously I had no issue with them. I've read something about netemu being the issue but didn't get to the cause or find a solution. Everything else is still working perfectly though like PS1, PS3, homebrew and emulators.
I haven't done a lot yet, but what little I've tested works well.
I've installed a few PS2 games as packages, and so far the 2 I tested worked (Front Mission 4 and Bloody Roar 4).
I couldn't get any PSP games to work, but I'm going to attempt these again with some changes.
Regardless of the soft modding, I'm gonna keep 1 PS3 as the official version with all my official items on it. (I have a slim and a superslim.)

23 hours ago, Rick Dangerous said:Not an idiot at all! Some of the PS1 games on there are big bucks to buy original copies of now; and are only available on PS4-5 as part of a subscription service (PS now?). Last way to own them on the cheap really.
Oh yeah totally agree on that part!
I realized a few games that I can definitely suggest buying on the PSN for PS3/Vita/PSP as well!
All three Mega Man Legends games!
- Mega Man Legends - a classic~
- Mega Man Legends 2 - a sequel to a classic and hard to find
- The Misadventures of Tron Bonne - a lesser known title in the series, a physical copy of this goes for like $200+ so... less than $10 is cheap cheap!
I'd also suggest some of the following games as they're pretty decent titles without any modern way to get to them.
- Final Fantasy Tactics / Final Fantasy Tactics War of the Lions - PS1 version is still good, but the PSP version has some nice polish added.
- Legend of Dragoon - It hasn't aged super duper well, but it's still a fun and unique PS1 RPG experience!
- Threads of Fate - Admittingly I've never finished this one, but I always really REALLY enjoyed the demo for it! An Action RPG with two separate but intertwined stories involving two characters with different powers.
- Future Cop LAPD - Just a really odd but surprisingly fun game. Very nice arcade-y gameplay and surprisingly fun 2-player mode (can be played with AI)
- UmJammer Lammy - A sequel/spinoff of Parappa the Rapper that (personally) I find easier and more fun.
Normally, I'd suggest all the Final Fantasy games here, but the modern ports have the nice "mods" in them. I would say I still prefer the original, but it's nice to have things like speed up to let you get through the game when you don't have the time.
EDIT - OH GOOD LORD MISADVENTURES OF TRON BONNE CAN GO FOR OVER $400 NOW! WHYYYYY IT ISN'T EVEN THAT GREAT OF A GAME!?! 😧

Actually, you can currently softmod the current official firmware (4.87) with a combination of a hybrid firmware and a piece of software called PS3Hen. It's supposed to work on the slims and superslim models.
I'm not going to link it as I'm unsure of the exact specifics of being allowed to share modding stuff for newer consoles. It's a pretty easy process to do... Once you realize you're doing it wrong and then do it the RIGHT way! I have completed the process on my spare superslim PS3. Just waiting to test out a couple of the features on it, like ripping PS3 games or playing PS2 titles.
-
Yeah I definitely need to re-visit the store and make some final purchases before it all goes down.
I think I own around 30-40 PS1 classics. Wouldn't mind getting closer to the full number they have on there. (Cause I'm an idiot LOL) -
Sony made the official announcement today... Not nearly as bad as it could have been!
The store is shutting down, BUT YOU CAN STILL DOWNLOAD ALL PURCHASED TITLES! (including Free PS+ games)
Full details in link below~

I'm not happy about this, but I also knew it was coming.
It's sort of the risk of doing any digital libraries. I'd argue they could figure out a way to close the store without cutting you off from your download list.
OH WELL! This just seems like full 100% justification to hack and mod your PSP, PS3, and PS Vita.
