The Official "Thrift finds" Thread
KeeperofLindblum replied to Happy_Dude's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I've had a couple finds lately, but was waiting to show off all at once. I might not have gotten THAT great of a deal, but I felt I did well on both of these occasions... Random friend sent me these Xbox games for cost of shipping. I found this Icewind Dale (looks complete as far as I'm concerned) for $2 at a goodwill. Picked up this small pile of items for $46. I got them to go down on the guides from $50 to $35. I could have done better on that last one, but I saw that all those guides go for quite a bit more normally. Just wish the Final Fantasy 3 guide was in better condition. FINAL EDIT - If anybody is interested in any of the items (NOT THE XBOX GAMES), feel free to message me. Otherwise those guides will probably go to eBay. lol -
Can someone explain Disney Infinity to me?
KeeperofLindblum replied to Eltigro's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Disney Infinity (along with Skylanders, Lego Dimensions, and amiibos) are basically all the "toys to life" genre of games. Each game has a bit of a different play style (except amiibos, they're just neat figures that do random things in random games). Each game has its own ups and downs, and they are all fun at a point. There's generally a "campaign" mode that has a story and levels to play about in. For Skylanders, this is the main portion of the game, but I'd say it shines best at this. It sort of an "action RPG" for beginners. I would say from personal experience that it's actually pretty fun without being too challenging. I don't have as much experience with Disney Infinity, but this one is probably going to have the most range of opinion. I know people (kids mostly) love the Toy Box mode where you just do what you want. There's campaigns for every set of toys, but I don't know how explorative this gets. From what I'd say, the campaigns/game in general is probably going to appeal most to people or kids who like the characters in them. IE you like Star Wars so Infinity 3.0 is pretty cool choice. Lego Dimensions is pretty new to the field, and it's also the most expensive buy-in. However, it comes with actual Legos you put together for the game to use, so the cost balances out. I've only played a bit of this, but it's your basic Lego game like every other one. (Which kinda disappointed me in that regard... thought it would be more somehow.) The only really cool thing about Dimensions to me was the variety of characters. Simpsons, Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, Lord of the Rings, Portal, Scooby Doo, DC, and more that I'm definitely missing at this time. Huuuuge variety of characters/franchises in here. Each one has a set of levels too. At the end of the day though, the only bummer about "Toys to life" games are the expense. If you get the old ones, you can get them fairly cheap, but if you attempt to keep up with the newest stuff... Buyer beware. This can get very expensive very fast with each set from these groups averaging around the $15 mark for a character and $30 for a set. Games are completely playable with what comes in them, but you're going to miss a lot of content without some of the extra packs/characters. SO OVERALL! They are a fun and varied kind of games, but they can be particularly expensive if you are getting the latest and greatest sets. (Also their resale value in most cases is crap so yeah...) -
...what's the point in playing it then? I only like the speed up part for trying to power level. Otherwise, that's just pure cheat buttons.

I really enjoyed how it looked overall, and I'll be purchasing it of course. But... This is just Final Fantasy XV with a Final Fantasy VII coat of paint. Look at how everything is on there, and you'll see that they're being (fairly) lazy and just copy-pasting a lot of the content from FFXV to make FFVII. As I told some friends, I'll still buy the shit outta both titles, but it seems a bit lame to me that I'm going to be getting the same game twice but with a different look really. And yes I've heard that they didn't actually do that... but come on. It looks and plays nearly identical to FFXV. That's exactly what they did. OKAY SORRY GOT THE NEGATIVE OUT OF THE WAY! They did a really good job here. It looks amazing, and everything looks fairly correct for what it's supposed to be. The characters look good and appropriate. The voicing sounds right for who it's coming from. I'll be happy to venture back through that great world. I won't say that they should have kept the turn-based combat (I would have preferred it honestly), but the combat looks pretty fun and cool. It's a very pretty game, and it'll be nice to see a reinterpretation of Final Fantasy VII now that they have like a huuuuuge amount of extra story behind/interwoven/surrounding it all. Now all that being said, what I would TRULY love to see is a game with that caliber of graphics with a true turn-based system! Can you imagine past FFVII with THOSE looks? I'd buy it five times hands down not a second thought.

I dunno... I'm not super familiar with the series, but based on everything it lists as content, I'd almost call it $60 worth. I've seen bigger triple A titles with less content then what that lists. Granted... I might just be crazy here. lol

Let's be fair guys. The most likely scenario here is they simply "port" all the PS2 classics from the PSN store on the PS3 to the PSN store on the PS4. It seems weird to me that they'd create a backwards compatibility that completely skips a generation when going back. I'd personally think the PS3 would be the more logical choice here. Not saying I won't be hoping for the best (actual PS2 discs), but I think we just shouldn't get our hopes up. I'd say this right here ^^^ above anything else people mentioned. I would ask though... Doesn't the PS2 emulator allow you to upscale the image like some of the other higher up (generation-wise) emulators? Because not all games are that cheap physically. Sure you could probably find some of the bigger releases still complete in box, but not all the titles you might want are going to be cheaper than a digital copy. The PS3's massive librairy of PS1 classics holds very true for this. Many of those titles go for easily 3 or 4 times what they're selling digitally. There's a nice convenience of the digital library having a huge stock of games you want at affordable prices while also eliminating the need for a physical storage. In general, I'd greatly prefer the real disc with the box and manual, but it's not always that easy to find the exact releases you want in the exact condition you want while also paying a moderate price for it. Granted! My PS2 had a modded memory card and my PS1 has a mod chip, so I guess I could just not pay for games at all if I wanted. Just... prefer the real items if I can get them.

Mega Man Legacy Collection (XB1, PS4, 3DS, PC)
KeeperofLindblum replied to Atariboy's topic in Modern Console Discussion
BestBuy has an exclusive 3DS release that comes with a Gold Mega Man amiibo and some extra goodies. Looks like a pretty good deal... http://www.bestbuy.com/site/mega-man-legacy-collection-collectors-edition-nintendo-3ds/4738600.p?id=bb4738600&skuId=4738600 -
Square Sale lots of old stuff
KeeperofLindblum replied to cimerians's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Well I wouldn't mind a few of these titles, but the shipping (like $8 for a single title) seems a bit much. I tried it out with several titles (probably not going to buy), and the shipping only increased to like $9 for four titles. So.... there is that. Beyond the cost of shipping, I like the overall pricing on several of the titles here. Seems crazy that they still have PS1 titles in stock. -
Purchased an item from the Mr. Emehr. It was a great price (Game Boy Player), he shipped really fast, and even refunded a bit of the change when he figured up the shipping wrong. Would highly suggest buying from him!

Aaand now I have a bit of sad news to report. I think the Framemeister was helping the 16-Bit Entertainment System more than I thought. I still have to test it on a couple other TVs... but there's something I didn't notice before. Hopefully nobody has looked into acquiring their own yet, because it's got a major case of jail bars. I didn't notice them too much on my big HDTV with the Framemeister hooking it up, but when I hooked it to an LCD monitor I have with S-Video... the bars became insanely visible. I went ahead and tested it on two more TVs (older HDTV and a CRT). The jail-bars aren't too obvious until the screen brightens up... then they're immediately there. Feel bad for not testing it a bit further before I put forth my review. Sorry people. -___- As for the Earthbound thing, I didn't get the initial anti-piracy bit when you start up. I loaded up an old game and didn't get any interruptions there. Just need to try doing a new game... Otherwise it didn't seem to trip anything.

PM sent for Game Boy Player.

Not to go TOO FAR off topic, but I got the 16-Bit Entertainment System in today! It's made by the same people who did the 8-Bit Entertainment System, but it's the Super Nintendo rather than the original Nintendo. (Thus the names.) From what I said on here, the 8-Bit really wasn't too bad for the price. It wasn't a perfect replica, but it played a decent portion of my NES titles. But we come back around to... How did the 16-Bit fair? I'd say that overall... It went pretty well! (Once again) I got it for $25 plus shipping on eBay. (Link here) The console comes with everything you need to play except a cart. (System, power, composite cable, s-video cable, 2 controllers) The inclusion of the S-video port and cable is pretty nice though since it gives you a vastly superior picture compared to the composite. Now comparing side-by-side on my fancy HDTV with Framemeister, the difference was fairly minimal. My original SNES looked better, but it was also running RGB through the Framemeister whereas I pushed the 16-bit through the S-Video port instead. When I get a chance, I'm going to push the system through a few alternate TVs to see if the results hold up. Regardless of that playthrough though, I can say for a fact that the S-Video option is clearly the best route through this thing. The color might have been a bit off, but that could easily be the RGB versus S-Video. The sound seemed just fine as well, and I couldn't really tell the difference (if there even was a big one). Only tried one controller, but it really felt like a clone controller... Okay but nothing compared to the real deal. (AKA Cheap SNES controller is cheap.) Of course, the thing people here will probably care about is compatibility. And this thing... actually really surprised me. I've got around 20-30 SNES games total, and everything worked except for ONE title. There was also two items that gave me some issues. I'll list what I tried below along with the few separate problem items below that. *SFC = Super Famicom = Japanese title Actraiser Breathe of Fire Darius Twin Donkey Kong Country Super Donkey Kong 2 (SFC) Earthbound Final Fantasy Mystic Quest Front Mission Gun Hazard Gradius III Illusion of Gaia Kirby Super Star The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Mega Man X Mega Man X2 Mega Man X3 Pilotwings Pink Goes to Hollywood Prince of Persia 2 Rockman & Bass (SFC) Rockman 7 (SFC) Star Fox Star Fox 2 Super Mario Kart Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars Super Mario World Super Metroid (SFC) Couple of random (and forgot their name) Japanese titles. And on a great note, both my Super Everdrive (flashcart) and the Super Retro Advance (GBA adapter for SNES) worked perfectly in the system! I only tried loading the Super Everdrive and a single title on it, but it did look and load just fine. The Super Retro Advance isn't that much of a surprise since it only uses the system it's in for power and controller. Now for the slight problem children... The Legend of Mystical Ninja - Dunno what went wrong here. I cleaned it and everything. Works on my SNES, not on the clone. Might just be my copy but hard to really test that...(Guess I could try the Super Everdrive >_<) Super Gameboy - This did work, but it didn't sound or look quite right. The sound alone would make me not want to use it via the system though. It's tolerable, but I still wouldn't recommend it. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island - This loaded and seemed to be working, but there was a really loud buzzing noise that I couldn't handle listening to. So overall, the compatibility is pretty great. The repro carts I have worked, and the flash cart worked as well. You could easily invest in a Super Everdrive plus this system and be fairly well off. It's not perfect, but I don't feel like anybody who wants "perfection" is going to settle for a cheap clone anyways. I will make one big note before the final bit near the end of my post though. This will probably be the nail in the coffin for anybody here interested, so I might as well get it out there. Remember how the 8-Bit had like a super death grip on carts? Well... the 16-Bit kinda has this as well unfortunately. I kinda get the idea of the slot having a grip for NES games (since that's how the front loader NES did it), but the SNES didn't do that. Did it? Hard to notice though since the SNES has an eject button whereas the 16-Bit does not. There were a few times I was scared that my carts would get damaged somehow. Everything seems to have come out okay, but I figured to throw that out there. Time to wrap this all up with a Pros and Cons. Pros -High compatibility (97% according to their eBay page) -Looks (thru S-Video) and sounds good -Highly affordable -Works with Super Everdrive Cons -Video and sound aren't absolutely perfect -Random issues with a few games (might just be me) -Weird death grip -Feels cheap -Cheap SNES controllers are cheap So if you aren't just hankering for the "real deal" or you want an affordable clone to lug around, I'd highly recommend it. You can't beat a (nearly) fully working SNES for $25! Comes with two controllers even! You're lucky to find that for like $40-50 on eBay, and even then, the shell itself probably looks pretty pitiful. Sorry to randomly interrupt the thread, but I figured I'd throw this up here.

Holy crap I didn't realize there was so little to the inside of the system... XD I went ahead and ordered their 16-Bit Entertainment System as well, so I'll have something up on it as well. According to their ebay auction on that one, it has a "97 percent" compatibility. It's only $25 plus shipping with two controllers... Figured it is worth a shot as well! I'll let you guys know how that one goes.

Now that you say that... I feel like I have read that somewhere on this forum before. Regardless of that though, the color was still really off in several places, but that might have been my big ol' modern TV doing that. I think we've got a working CRT upstairs, so I might try plugging the system into that today... EDIT - Okay! I had some free time earlier and decided to give the console a shot on two more TVs. First, I went to what is my old HDTV in the living room. It accepts the old 240p signal just fine and... didn't look too bad. It's still really fuzzy and the color is what it is. Although I hate to say it, but I think my new TV's color is off so that may have been part of my issues. Really need to look up some ideas of how to really configure it right. I'd still say if you are using a modern display, that the 8-Bit Entertainment System is good enough and playable. However, I remembered we had an old CRT upstairs along with an old VCR. (Symphonic CRT and Sony VCR for those who might be curious.) I went up, got it all plugged in, and... it actually looked pretty good for that. The color still felt a tad wonky, but I think I'm so used to a true RGB setup that anything off from that irks me. On the CRT (and through VCR), it looked pretty good actually. Of course, if it comes to that scenario, I have a feeling most people are going to just prefer the real NES in the long run since a purist of that level (CRT and/or VCR) is probably going to want the real deal.
-
Turns out it's under a completely different name over there although it is the system in question. "Nintendo Clone Console" Even ships from the people who actually make it... or so it seems at least. If/when I have a little extra cash, I think I'll give their SNES clone a try as well. Might as well cover both bases! (That and the SNES one is the same deal... console, two controllers, and cables (including s-video adapter) for only $25)

I got my 8-Bit Entertainment System (going to abbreviate as 8BES from here on) in tonight!... and these are the results. Games That Worked ==================== Dragon Warrior Earthbound 0 Kirby's Adventure The Legend of Zelda The Legend of Zelda 2 - Adventure of Link Mach Rider Mega Man 2 Metroid Pac-Man (Tengen) Punch-Out! (Mike Tyson's) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III - The Manhattan Project StarTropics StarTropics 2 (Zoda's Revenge) Trojan Viper Games That Didn't Work* ========================= Mega Man 3 Mega Man 4 *These games worked on my regular NES (RGB-modded) but needed cleaning. They still refused to work after cleaning on the 8BES. My thoughts on it so far? I can't give a fully detailed opinion because this is my first clone system, but overall it did work. The few games I had issues with were instantly workable once I cleaned the game a bit. (My own negligence unfortunately) They looked "okay" for being what they were... NES games on a modern TV, and I had to hook the 8BES through my Framemeister because the TV (55" 4K Vizio) refused to accept the input from it. Anyways! It does for certain work as a NES replacement. I only tested the one controller but it seemed to look and work perfectly fine. It does feel weird though because the bottom has a glossy coat and feels strange compared to the normal controller. Beyond that everything else is kinda negative. The output is awful, even by composite standards. It just looks terrible. Granted, I'm used to an RGB-modded NES, but the 8BES looks even worse than a regular NES does through composite. I'd say most of the games were still pretty playable, but the yellow seemed to stick out really bad. I'll have a video up here in a bit showing off the 8BES in action. (Going to show off 5 games from the list.) Above anything else though, I have a feeling nobody here would like it for one reason... Removing a cart. The games go in pretty easy but pulling them out was almost terrifying. The death grip the system had on the games was unreal. When I was doing the final game, I was almost afraid I was going to wreck it somehow. In the end, the 8-Bit Entertainment System is what it is... A NES clone you can get for like $15-20 (including shipping). It comes with everything you need (system, cables, 2 controllers) and plugs up easy enough. It's really small too, so you could easily carry it in around. I don't know who I can really recommend it to though...

The Official "Thrift finds" Thread
KeeperofLindblum replied to Happy_Dude's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Well I stopped by a closing Pawn Shop / Junk Store and everything was 70% off. Most of the games were newer material, but I did manage to spot something quite nice... It's a copy of Riven: The Sequel to Myst. The manual is missing, but everything else looks to be in great condition. Only cost me like $1. I'm not super interested in keeping it, so if anybody here wants it, just shoot me a PM. Probably just send it for free even. lol -
I went ahead and picked up this "8-Bit Entertainment" on eBay because it's only $10 plus shipping. (Cost me a total of $17) I figure I'll hook it up and throw it through the ringer to see if it was worth it. lol Worst case? (And the case most likely regardless) I give it to a friend as a gift or something. Not like I'm going to fret too much over the small amount.

How has this not been posted yet? Retro VGS
KeeperofLindblum replied to racerx's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Everytime I looked at their 3D render... It kept making me think of something. I think I've finally cracked the code! Isn't actually a game console... It's a time machine! THINK ABOUT IT! Retro VGS isn't about playing old games or retro-style new games... It's about going back in time to fix this terrible current generation of gaming timeline! Think about it... Even the previous generation (PS3/360/Wii(sorta)) was still pretty good... but the current one is awful. Why did it get so awful? The Retro VGS team can't say anything more, or they'd have to worry about people abusing their time machine and making things worse. EDIT - I think I should have put that back to late-70s, but you get my point. Xp -
[For Sale] Raspberry Pi 2
KeeperofLindblum replied to KeeperofLindblum's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
Bump with slight price drop! Price drop is offered to current people entertaining the offers for this item as well of course. I can't/won't drop the bundle cost any lower, but I'm willing to take items off to decrease the cost more. -

Skylanders Super Chargers First Impressions
KeeperofLindblum replied to Shawn's topic in Sony PlayStation 4
Good to know the game has kept up with itself! Being on their fifth sequel, it must be hard to keep creating newer and different forms of playing the game. They are going to really have to step things up to compete with the Star Wars Infinity and the soon-to-be-released Lego Dimensions! I've seen a few of the new characters and vehicles. Overall, they are all pretty neat looking and fairly creative. (Don't know what to think about the cost increase though...) All costs aside, my experience with the series is pretty positive. I picked up Skylander's Swap Force a couple years back when it went on sale. Outside of the whole figurine cost, it's actually a pretty solid game. It provides a challenge without being over the top hard. There is plenty to do and see, and it's even better for kids with the figurines carrying their personal stats on them. If the game was a bit cheaper to play, I'd probably get it again. XD
