  1. Just out of curiosity, were IntelliVisions still being sold at stores in 1985?

The Intellivision II most certainly was.  The INTV III was still being sold at Toys R Us in 1987 for around $70.00.

  2. Spotted this sweet Kia Elan today. It’s the second one I’ve ever seen, the first one was blue. These are rebadged Lotus Elans, although they have different taillights which I frankly think looks better than the original.

Interesting as GM owned Lotus and part of Isuzu at the time. I never knew they rebadged them and slapped a Kia engine in place of the more powerful Isuzu engine. The Elan is on the same platform and shares parts with the Impulse and Geo Storm.

Imo, the Impulse RS was far better than the Elan...same engine, AWD and half the price (just not convertible). I wonder if the Elan also has the vestigial drive shaft tunnel and mounting points for the rear diff like my Storm.

  3. I didn't want to pay $2.91 a gallon at the Exxon (and that's the cheap stuff!), so after work I drove across town to King Sooper's to use my reward points (because I spent too much on groceries) and now I can save 10 cents a gallon...Off of $3.09 a gallon.

@fdurso224 Do you tell those people the Yugo was rated at 24 mpg (4.2 gallons per 100 miles) combined city/hwy?  That's nearly the same as a modern Dodge Durango SUV with 293 HP.

I regret only buying one when they were selling for $20.  Same for the Jaguar.  Should have bought a pallet of each.

  6. Is it common for monochrome monitors to warm up faster than color ones?

    1. Turbo-Torch

      Turbo-Torch

What year monitors do you have?  In the 70s and maybe early 80s some TVs had a sub-power circuit that kept filaments energized for a fast warm up feature.  If you turned on the TV after it was unplugged, it would take much longer for it warm up.  Some had a sub-power switch...you'd flip it to "vacation" to conserve power while out of town.  When I was a kid, I remember looking through the vent holes in the rear of our TV and seeing the filament glow while the TV was turned off.

Do you have a kill-a-watt?  If so, plug your monitors in and see if they draw power while turned off.  It would be interesting to know if something as old as your PET monitor does that.

  7. Need opinions pls. I've been looking for a crt tv for a while, finally have someone willing to sell me a 25" for 20 bucks. But it doesn't have rca ports, only one input for a coax cable. All my systems are av modded but I have a converter to connect them. Is it worth it? Does the cable connection/conversion degrade the picture?

    1. Turbo-Torch

      Turbo-Torch

For fun I just went to CL -> free and searched TV.  Currently 19 CRT TVs for free in my area, many are Trinitron and Wega. No point in settling for something with only a coax. They'll probably have to pay the city dump more than $20 to dispose of that fatty tumor.

I just checked the site out and every title I clicked on has a box to the left with options such as tech help, screen shots and downloads.  Clicking on download works for me.  Try a different browser, or maybe you have an add blocker interfering.

  9. Remember back when I was looking for ways to transfer files onto my Tandy 200, and you warned me about those cheap chinese usb to serial adapters and I got one anyways because they were cheap? Guess what: mine just broke.

If you're close to a Best Buy, they usually have them in the store.  I've been using mine for years with no problems.  I think they're around $20 bucks.

  11. The batteries in my mouse died.  Personally I think cordless keyboards and mouses suck.  Why would I want to pay for and change batteries.

    1. Turbo-Torch

      Turbo-Torch

I finally got a decent mouse on Amazon for about $14 (Inphic). Charges from USB port in under 2 hours and lasts over 2 months with daily use. It goes to sleep so you don't have to remember to turn it off and you can also use it while plugged in and charging. Liked it enough that I another for my desktop.

My old Mircosoft mouse ate up an AA alkaline battery every month and you had to remember to turn it off.

  12. Might be in possession of a Scrambler amusement park ride...I'm sure it's not legal to have in your backyard but when I eventually move to somewhere bigger, who has to know 😉😶

    1. Turbo-Torch

      Turbo-Torch

One issue will be getting power to it. Many small rides need at least a dedicated 208 volt 3PH 100 amp feed. That's for commercial/industrial buildings. Where I am, you'll have a second utility bill each month just for that service whether you use it or not. Traveling carnivals always have a few massive generators to power all their rides.

Still sounds interesting, but do you think the fun factor will last more than a week? On the other hand, if you have a huge family and you're hosting a kid's birthday party every other month, you get an automatic dad of the year award.

  13. Followup:  I had someone come out and replace my well pump and starter circuit.  I now have water again.  $1800 is really going to cut into my gaming budget though.

    1. Turbo-Torch

      Turbo-Torch

That's pricey.  If you watched them, you could probably do it yourself next time.  My deep well is 100' down...takes me less than 2 hours and under $400 for a pump and all wear and tear parts from the local big box hardware store.  Only "special" tool needed is a length of threaded pipe with a T and two small nipples at the top in case you accidentally drop it.  Screw the pipe into pitless adapter, pull the cable to disconnect and yank the sucker out.

  15. I'm having real trouble getting to sleep going on a week now. Any tips? I went for a doctor visit about it Thursday. He just thinks it's anxiety. I haven't been able to swim for 2 months, so I haven't been exercising. Yoga was recommended, but so far I'm still just laying there for hours trying to fall asleep.  If I take enough melatonin I'll get to sleep, but that makes me feel groggy when I wake up. It's real frustrating to not be able to fall asleep normally.

Yesterday I had a really busy day, I mowed grass and trimmed at 2 places, for a total of about 4 hours, and had to do grocery shopping and household chores. I was very active and yet I still couldn't fall asleep until about 3am this morning. It sucks.

      Turbo-Torch

One 5mg Melatonin tablet about 30 minutes before going to bed does it for me every time.

Maybe you're taking too high a dose if you're feeling bad the next day.

Even the QC sticker is in a different orientation. Looking at feedback and your conversation, seller appears to be an asshole who loves the term jack off. I wonder if he/she has a store and mouths off to people like that in person?

  18. I ordered a USB to Serial converter to use to transfer files between my modern laptop and my Tandy 200 a week ago on eBay, and the seller hasn't shipped it yet. It was supposed to be delivered by April 4th, but it hasn't left the seller's warehouse yet. I can't cancel my order as the seller already printed the shipping label, and I don't want to return it because I'll have to pay a $3 return fee on a $5 item. I tried to contact the seller multiple times and got no replies. Just gave him some negative feedback.

That should work perfect.  Many don't realize they need a null cable or adapter.  As I'm typing this, my Model III is hooked to my desktop using the 25 pin ribbon cable, 25 to 9 adapter, null modem adapter and then the USB to serial.  It works flawless.  It also works perfect with my Atari 130XE SIO2PC adapter and APE software. No longer need to drag out the old PC with real RS232 ports.

I paid $11 for mine at the local Best Buy.  They're usually $20 but they always seem to offer open box for much less; mine was sealed in the blister pack.  My three local Best Buy stores show them in stock (curb side pickup).

They also work 100% perfectly, which isn't usually the case for no name drop ship China junk.

Do you also have a null modem?

Over 1" of snow?  "Normal" thing to do is panic and run to the grocery store and stock up on milk, bread and TP.

Sorry to tell you, but your area has now gone beyond pandemic and is entering the apocalyptic phase! lol

I canceled Netflix several years just because of those autoplay ads.  Maybe I wasn't the only one and they figured out that annoying crap was losing customers.  Can't say I've missed them one bit as Prime has been far more enjoyable imo.

  23.  I just went through a Wendy’s drive up. Ordered a #1, medium, cherry cola, paid for my order, picked up my order at the second window and rolled up my window. As I was driving away I heard a weird noise. I look to my left back into the store and there’s four or five employees applauding me. Is this some weird new Wendy’s promotion or is it just a prank? I’m so confused but it actually made me smile!

    1. Turbo-Torch

      Turbo-Torch

Did it come with service records and did he have a ppi done by a 928 specialist?  If not, some things needs to be checked asap.  Engine is interference...regular timing belt, water pump and tensioner replacement is critical.  All rubber fuel lines need to be replaced...it WILL eventually catch fire if they are original.  Original high pressure power steering hose is also a fire hazard.  If automatic, thrust bearing end play needs to be checked and tension off the torque tube needs to be released by loosening a clamp.  It's an engineering design flaw that allows the torque tube to creep forward and put pressure on the flex plate and thrust bearing.  If driven long enough, internal engine boring starts and you won't know the damage is happening until the engine is completely destroyed.  That area is easy to access and check during oil changes and improved aftermarket clamps exist.

Being a member of Rennlist forms is a must for 928 owners.
