  1. xD Reading that with your Fry profile picture made me laugh. I'm only here for the Genesis stuff but retro is retro! >.> Spanks! I'd go crazy for a Streets of Rage 2 arcade machine but that's not a thing >.> I like Neo Geo but apart from the price it's also a bit too heavy on fighting games. The idea that a game doesn't "count" when it isn't in a torn 20 year old box and manual that's been sat on, is a bit strange to me. But I suppose this sort of thing is for people who have a lot of money to spend on games they'll never want to physically play? I wouldn't feel right playing a 300$ game like Twinkle Tale at least.. Seeing as plenty of loose cartridges often have writing and torn labels on them, they're probably not interested in buying those either. Disc cases are pretty logical since you don't want discs to scratch up ^^ .. I get everything on a loose cartridge and fix it up with a uniform look, myself. It's a lot of work but you only need to do it once per game. I think part of the reason why Truxton went up in price is because of Classic Game Room xD It's a youtube channel that reviews games and the guy preaches Truxton all day long, and I imagine people drive up the price for it because of that. But hey like I said, Raiden Trad has been more fun for me so I got that one instead for less than half the price! Horrendous Engrish and box art though, but that's got a certain charm.
  2. Currently hoping for: Trouble Shooter, Air Buster, Mega Turrican, Alisia Dragoon

  3. Heya, I felt like ranting I wonder why some games have to have such ridiculous pricing and others not so much. I'd say the average Genesis game on Ebay is 10-20 dollars. I can appreciate that well enough, especially when you go for auctions and win a game for 60% of the price. But then there's that cool game you want to try and they charge insane amounts of money for it. - Castlevania Bloodlines: 45$ - Mega Turrican: 100$ (discovered through this forum) - Sailor Moon: 90$ (I'm a girl, shush xD) - TMNT The Hyperstone Heist: 55$ - Trouble Shooter: 45$ (and I rly want that)* - Truxton: 60$ ** * Sold for 18$ once, I'm still kicking myself ** Got Raiden Trad instead. I seem to prefer it over Truxton. I know Trouble Shooter and Mega Turrican are in fairly high demand with collectors but the supply is not as limited as they'd want you to think. I even saw a "RARE! Mega Turrican!" among 10 other copies, which is what really frustrates me. I hate these artificial prices and the fact that people keep driving them up to create a false rarity; Some of us care about the games and not about making money. I think it's prices like these that make reproduction carts a tempting purchase for people. I don't think it's wrong to do it with games that were only released in Japan, or barely released outside of it, but for people to charge this much for extremely common 25 year old games is a little disappointing at times. One more thing! Do people -really- care about boxed versions? The boxes are half-eaten a lot of the time, and it's remarkably easy to find a cover on www.thecoverproject.net for universal game cases. It strikes me as odd that some people would pay 20-40$ extra for a plastic box and a torn manual when they can have a clean look instead.
  4. Don't use nail polish remover! I use nail polish remover on my nails and .. yeah that's it. They contain substances to make the experience of cleaning your nails less smelly or irritating to the skin. I strongly suggest not using substances other than 90%+ isopropyl alcohol, and denatured alcohol just because they leave zero residue. Added some more below. The best way to clean a cartridge is to open it up and clean it that way. You usually need a hexagon-shaped screwdriver bit though, which can be bought for 6$ or so off ebay so that's lucky. -> Use an eraser to go across the pins in a horizontal movement (so not up and down the pins, but across the board) -> Clean the inside plastic because a small army of people have probably blown in it and that is gross! -> Don't worry about opening the cartridge and removing the board to clean things; the board only fits in one way A great, reasonable way to clean a cartridge is to use high% (like 99%) isopropyl or denatured alcohol -> Fill a tiny bowl with the cleaning alcohol, then dip a Q-tip into it -> Use Q-tip to brush up and down across the pins, opposite of what you'd do with an eraser -> Wait a day or two, and it should work better than ever -> Don't use other liquids to clean because they 99% sure leave residue -> Won't really clean the plastic from obscure germs from the 1980s xD Definitely clean your genesis! Don't forget to clean your console's cartridge slot! My games work 100% of the time after cleaning the cartridges and the slot on the genesis. It is well worth taking an hour to clean, and letting it rest for two days afterwards. I should add that if you can't launch a game in a few tries after cleaning both a cartridge and the slot on the genesis, you may have other issues.. but nothing is unfixable anyway -> (edit), you can use denatured/isopropyl alcohol for the console's cartridge slot as well. The power cable/port can also get dirty, so it works there too. Definitely dry for a few days.
  5. You guys have some of the more overpriced games it seems xD I'm still working on my genesis (modding, fixing, cleaning, painting, a few LEDs), and I am thrilled to play Phantasy Star 4 soon! Got Castlevania Bloodlines and that's really why I commented, because it's such a great game. Shame about Wily Wars being a slowed down PAL game though I doubt you'll find the real Japanese Rockman version for any cheap price.
  6. It seems I have the same issue. Some games work, some games don't work. After moving the power chord, some of the games do start working again. Moving the chord during gameplay will shut it off as well. Glad I read about this topic on time.
  7. I'm so thrilled to see these posts. I've gone through them all and browsed the internet with all this information to see what works out best. Excellent! It seems my friend and his electrician dad are more than happy to help me out with procuring and modifying as long as I can somewhat direct them. I used that info and peeked around on the net. I might be able to RGB->SCART, then convert to HDMI. Nicely upscaled, it seems like it outputs incredible quality on HDTVs. Just need to watch out for an input delay. That's good to hear. You know, people sometimes modify their retro consoles into cute things like a toaster (nintoasters are adorable xD). I think instead of cutting an ugly hole into a genesis we might be able to preserve quality by considering other or well modified cases. Could allow for japanese cartridges to fit. This is something special that I worry about. I wonder if a good SCART to HDMI will fix sync issues along the way.. or am I really missing the point here? xD I would have never known about that. I'll make sure to get the right model's power supply. I'm so grateful for all the help. Thanks so much!
  8. First of all - Hello! I'm new at this. REAL new. I never owned my own sega genesis / mega drive, but I did play it when I was younger. As a girl who grew up with two brothers I quickly got addicted to NES games, and their friends had more modern consoles for me to enjoy as well. My fondest memories were when we would go to the arcade to play light gun, fighting and racing games, and that scammy grab-a-puppet box thing that always seemed to have a mario in it as if to taunt me. I live in Belgium of all places, and I spent the past few months peeking at games online to see what console captures my nostalgic feelings the most. It turned out to be the mega drive / genesis! Unfortunately I lack the experience and I have numerous questions that I hope can be answered in detail and in ways that I may understand. 1) I want an american console, what wires do I use? I'm not much of a modder, but even if it is modded I would feel safer playing on a US console due to its broader game selection. These are easy enough to get as I may even go to the US in the coming year! Do I just need to get different cables for it to run properly? If so, can you make a recommendation for power and sound? I have SCART and component options in my tv. 2) I have a 100hz HDTV, would an american genesis display properly? I wonder if this television would accurately display a US genesis because NTSC goes in 60hz while PAL does 50hz. Europe goes up in 50s while America goes up in 60s. I know - I'd rather do it on an older tv but this isn't possible for me right now. 3) If I get a modded PAL genesis after all (as in mega drive), will US games display properly and run at proper speeds, especially on a european TV (albeit 100hz)? This sounds like a horrible question, but honestly I google for hours and only really get confusion answers. I know PAL is commonly slower, which lessens the experience. HALP! Why I don't want a Retron, even though I like games from all regions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOujbFz4Xts Thank you for reading I really appreciate clear answers because I would hate to spend my money on things that don't work as planned. I am horrible with these things and I would be so thrilled to have someone hold my hand with this. Maybe someday I can share some of this wisdom with other needy nerdy retro gamers, because they just don't make them like they used to.
