1. Yeah, that's me.  I've been hard to find lately what with both my father and my stepfather passing away in a 2 month span.  Apologies to anyone needed to find me.

Wow.  I just checked out the modded Jr. over at Atari2600.com.  I'm trying to get in touch with them to get our arrangement going again.  I tried to offer these through the Atariage store, but Albert didn't seem very interested in making it work.  I'll try again when things settle down a little bit for me.

One of the problems with the CyberTech board is that the parts cost is *high*...over $20, IIRC.  So retail costs are necessarily high.  With royalty and retail markups it gets to be expensive.  Though I think the 8bitdomain boards are $40, without the features of the CyberTech board.

Without the ability to trim brightness, contrast, or color saturation the cost goes down a lot...retail could maybe be brought under $30.  What do people think?  Is it worth a reducing the  feature set to bring the cost down?

Let me know what you think.

    Chris-

I just wanted to say, thanks for the mod. This thread reminded me that I was still holding onto a pretty dusty kit from December of '03.. I installed it today, and man.. It just doesn't get any better. Crisp/clean s-video and stereo sound.

If you came out with a 'fixed' mod with the same output quality that was significantly less expensive than the cybertech, I'd be first in line. By the same token, I'd also be down for the cybertech. How many people really need to adjust their boards? I dunno. I wouldn't touch mine if I didn't need to, so the pots aren't a huge deal for me (but I do like having the option).

    Thanks again.

  2. What you as a bidder are willing & able to pay for an item, has little to do with what a seller wants to start his auctions at.

To you $200 is high, but the seller doesn't seem to think so. In his mind that might be a $1000 lot he's sacrificing for $200 and he is offering it with no reserve as he states.

    930135

It isn't without a reasonable reserve. That's the point. Without a reserve, in most peoples mind, will be at the minimum starting cost. Ask around.

Personally, I don't care what the seller is asking. That's not my point.

  3. Reserve auctions are usually unknown pricing for one thing. The opening bid could be $1 or $200, and you could bid $500 and still be wasting your time. Unless you are willing to bid high enough on an unknown sell point that only the seller knows.

I'm not even sure how to reply to this. I think I'll just say the intelligent majority gets it.

  4. Huge Atari 800 XL Computer System LOT Very Rare! NR

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Huge-Atari-800-XL-Comp...1QQcmdZViewItem

Call me crazy, but when you start an item at price XX, THAT'S a reserve.

And $100 shipping.  Sure, why not.

    929320

By that logic, then EVERY auction has a reserve. In essence, that's what the opening bid is/should be, right?

    929855

Just curious, are you the seller, or a bidder?

Is there a difference between a $1 starting bid, and a $200 starting bid? What's the definition of a reserve?

  5. Judging from the game selection of the Flashback 2, do any of you really think they're done with the 2600 just yet?

    914994

Thomas asked about testing cart based games, etc. on FB2, and Curt shot it down as not necessary - the FB3 will not be 2600 based.

And if I had to guess a form-factor, I'd say mini-5200. I can't see them going with a real keyboard and I especially don't see them going with a fake keyboard.

I'd also like to guess pads for SIO port, pads for standard ps/2 keyboard, 3rd party cartridge converter for whichever ROM type is supported (prefer A8 over 5200 myself).

If I were to have any input, I would wish for an easy way to attach to a VGA monitor - but that's probably right out. Guess I'll have to "settle" for super-clean composite :)

  6. Well, SWP was over in Fort Worth I believe.  It amazes me how much Atari stuff actually has taken place in the DFW area (Dallas/Fort Worth).

Yeh, that was before wall came down.  To be honest, I knew which side was ours and which was behind the wall.. at least then... and I knew of a small pocket on the other side of the wall that was not communist that we used to fly supplies too.  Honestly, glad those specific days are over.

That is one part of the classic Atari days.. when the Atari 8-bit was in it's prime, and the ST was just emerging that one has to remember.  It was not a day of terrorists as much, but the scare of the soviet union and communists.  Raid Over Moscow is a prime example.  A very homophobic time as well as a time in fear, or at least taunting of communism.

Made for great discussions on the BBS's, along with hacking and Phreaking.  ;)

It was good to know who the white hats and who the black hats were. Unlike today.

  7.

While this is humerous now, and frustrating then, it's unfortunate that you had to deal with such ignorant people. I know that the rest of the world, especially Europeans, think that most Americans are stupid, ignorant and arrogant, and then something like this happens to further that stereo-type. It is true that there are a lot of lazy, ignorant, stupid, arrogant Americans like this, which is unfortunate, but it's not all of us. Probably half. Blame Hollywood, I do. The other half of us are no more stupid, lazy, arrogant and ignorant than the rest of the world. The rest of the world just happens to come into contact with more stupid, lazy, ignorant, arrogant Americans than similiar people from other countries simply becuase there are more of them per-capita. Larger populations mean larger percentages and more likelyhood of running across them. I would like to apologize on behalf of the smarter half of the US population, even if it is belated. Oh, one more thing; this tendancy towards ignorance and stupidity has nothing to do with Republicans or Democrats, both parties have their equal share. You don't become a world-dominating super-power by being lazy, stupid and ignorant...though arrogance helps. ;) After all, technically, in a world view, we are just a detached extension of the old English empire, once removed.

Understand that I'm writing this from the perspective of someone who has spent more of their time in the U.S. than any other part of the world. I personally don't believe Americans are predisposed to being any smarter/dumber, lazy/industrious than anyone else. From my perspective, it was just a surprising reaction at the time, one of those, "are you serious?" moments, where you half-believe you're being put on.

Any former SWP employees ghosting around the board :)

  8. Yes it happens to be mine.  Modded with:

    New On/OFF and Reset Switches

    Composite Video

    S-Video

    Component Video

    Analog Audio

    and "Intro Skip" BIOS

It took me about 6.5 hours for all the refurbishing and modding work, but I think it came out awesome.

Remember to bid early and bid often.  :D

Nice! If I were a Coleco-guy, I'd go for it. Good luck.

  9. "Back in the day" - My first part-time job, I worked for a company that specialized in Atari 8's in West Berlin, Germany. Because of my English skills, I was asked to contact the company that manufactured the ATR8000's, and arrange to import several for our customers. I believe they were based out of Texas.

Well.. I call, I get a hold of a sales person. They sound.. confused.. when I explain where I'm calling from. They put me on hold. Someone else picks up, and somewhat abruptly tells me that they don't "export to communist countries!"

    (dramatic pause)

I could not get it through to them that there was a difference between E. and W. Germany... Frustrating at the time, funny in hind-sight.

  10. Well, luck just isn't with me. I recently bought a "Heavy Sixer" via eBay. It has the rounded wood-grain, and it seems to have the extra shielding based on weight, but it's made in Taiwan. A transitional unit, in other words.

If you have an original original unit you'd like to part with at a reasonable cost, please pm me. Bonuses, but not necessary: grey powersupply, '77 joysticks.

I can also offer many retro items in trade, particularly Atari 8-bit and C64/128 hardware. Also have a complete Apple IIGS Woz edition (w/ monitor, 2x disk drives).

    Thanks-

  11. But even without explicit permission, if you buy a legal copy of the game (and I also include emulated compilations in this, since you're still buying the original program code), then you have the right to pretty much do whatever you want with it in the privacy of your own home.

    905871

That speaks to the heart of my question. Is the code bound to a specific product. It isn't too difficult to imagine that the licensing agreement for compilations, re-releases, and hardware sims like FB2 could include wording to tie the code to that product alone. A related example - Microsoft OEM product licensing (at least the current version), forbids you to remove the software from one machine, and install it on another. It's an ownership vs. licensing issue.

Do we have any copyright attorneys in the house :) Is Curt reading this? How did they do it with FB2?

Technically, to be legal, you have to dump your ROMs yourself, but as it's virtually impossible to determine whether or not a particular copy of a ROM image was legally acquired or not, you can most likely download ROM images to games that you own in cart form, and not get in trouble (although to be within the letter of the law, you must dump your own carts). Also, since you only lawfully own one copy of the game, then you can't use the original and the ROM image at the same time, if you want to stay 100% legal.

    905871

I hadn't heard that you have to dump your own code before. You state "letter of the law"; which law(s) are you referencing? (I'm in the U.S.)
