Copyright Licensing Q's- Compilations & Rereleases
Joe Stella replied to Joe Stella's topic in Emulation
That speaks to the heart of my question. Is the code bound to a specific product. It isn't too difficult to imagine that the licensing agreement for compilations, re-releases, and hardware sims like FB2 could include wording to tie the code to that product alone. A related example - Microsoft OEM product licensing (at least the current version), forbids you to remove the software from one machine, and install it on another. It's an ownership vs. licensing issue. Do we have any copyright attorneys in the house Is Curt reading this? How did they do it with FB2? I hadn't heard that you have to dump your own code before. You state "letter of the law"; which law(s) are you referencing? (I'm in the U.S.) -
Copyright Licensing Q's- Compilations & Rereleases
Joe Stella replied to Joe Stella's topic in Emulation
Hi- Thanks for the response. I think I ws being too vague. My question is actually from the end-user perspective. To illustrate: If I have a Flashback 2 unit, could I then legally play any of the FB2 games on a real Atari 2600 or using an emulator on a PC (or XBOX, or ???). If I owned a Williams Arcade software compilations for PS2, could I then legally play Gauntlet on MAME? etc.. Thanks! -
Does anyone know if ownership of one of the re-release or compilation software versions containing ROMs that run under emulation, or hardware simulators with built-in game compilations, i.e. Flashback 2 convey legal license to extract and use those ROMs on other platforms? Is this an easy, inexpensive alternative to purchasing bulky original equipment in order to legally use software emulators? Intuitively, I'd guess that unless it's stated otherwise in the licensing agreement for a specific product, the case for reuse of ROMs on any platform that supports them could be made. I don't think I've seen it discussed before.

WOW. Super-amazing. I keep asking myself what people would have thought about this game or similar caliber offerings in the 70's and 80's. "Couldn't be done", and "impossible" spring to mind. Can't you just see the jaw-dropping expression of Atari engineers back in the day? I wonder if any of the old devs check in on these forums. I'd love to read their reactions.

how about running minix?

How many of you use only 1970's - 80's era controllers?

Thomas has it right, it's all about the Competition Pro 5000 series... The joystick that lasts a life-time. Now with increased longevity through adaptation technology -

Each party responsible for their own shipping. Pickup in Los Angeles area available. PM me if you're interested. Thanks--

nintendo (and other companies) kull ebay by keyword on a continuous basis and "ask" that the auctions are pulled. ebay happily complies. in fact, some of these 'partners' may have access to an interface to kill auctions w/o involving ebay, or so i've been told. grain of salt, tin foil hat, etc. in the past, arguing for items that were multi-purpose but flagged by some company has led no where. has anyone had a pulled auction reinstated?
-
i see it. it's a guaranteed pull by ebay though.

check out 64hdd and star-commander. http://www.64hdd.com/index_en.html http://sta.c64.org/sc.html cables are easy to make, or can be purchased through ebay.de all the time (XE 1541 kabel). i'd also recommend http://www.lemon64.com for forums and info -- kinda the commodore equiv of atariage.

Before I eBay them, maybe someone here has a use. Mix and match any of these for a really nice system. 800XL -- Super clean, works all the way. 130XE -- Pretty close to new in color, very slight yellowing (you may not notice it). Unit has Super Video mod for excellent picture quality. Free form-fitting beige dust cover and manual included. 65XEGS -- Very nice, very slight yellowing (again, barely, but I mention it for completeness). System includes light gun (side stickers missing), grey joystick, keyboard, and FS cart. 1050 Disk Drive. Has Happy 7.x mod. JAM!! Composite or S-Video to VGA converter. I have two of these, both in box, one sealed. 1541 Commodore Disk Drive, original beige type. All have powersupplies, and whatever cables you need. Cost -- low eBay averages. Actual shipping charges only, any way you like via UPS or USPS, originating out of Southern California. Pick-up available if you're in the LA/OC area. I'll ship overseas. Want to trade? I'm looking for a couple of things: Atari 2600 Starpath/Arcadia Supercharger, Atari ST w/ at least 1 MB, Atari 850 Interface (or similar), Steve Tucker's APE for Windows, Pocket Programmer II Eprom burner, SpeedDOS or ProDOS + for Commodore 64 (or possibly other brand parallel interface mod/kernel mod for C64 and 1541 drives), 6502 assembler books, freeze cart or final cart (memory dump, machine monitor, etc.) -- or ??? I like oddball or clever mods of all sorts. I'm not looking for game carts or disks.

i want to want one, but i don't know what i would do with it. i'm not even sure i'd want one with an lcd display, given the availability of cheap pda's w/ decent enough emulators. having said that, i hope you develop it. definitely a cool project.

spendtoomuch - you're clearly in the right here. inky - bad place to highlight your mistakes. it's not spend2's problem that you don't have health insurance and/or can't budget. waaaaaa, i had a medical emergency. the auction was for $20, not $200k. if you're running on that kind of shoestring budget, you have no business bidding on ebay. waaaa, he didn't want to work it out. you gave no indication you wanted to work it out. and retaliating with a negative... that's low. you're on my blocked list. as the saying goes, failure on your part to plan ahead does not constitute an emergency on my part.

a mastercard commercial just played with background music that reminded me /strongly/ of paul's stuff, complete with an undulating track reminiscent of his modified fx-80. any chance you are getting some much deserved recognition? if you haven't downloaded his samples yet, do so -- amazing stuff.

CyberTech S-Video Card now available!!!
Joe Stella replied to cwilkson's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
Chris- Out of curiosity, would you mind disclosing some numbers (or maybe a range) of how many units are being sold? Is it a "hot item"? If not, totally understand. JS -
we're talking phyically moving, right? not application-level conversion? the original st's used a pretty-compatible FAT file system. if memory serves, you should be able to sneaker-net files from one to the other. or.. x/y/zmodem and a cross-over serial cable.. there have got to be better ways of doing it now - ethernet? some kind of serial or parallel network cable/software? disk-drive emulation via cable (think APE or 64HDD)?

when i was a young man, i used to work for a company out of berlin that blatantly sold knock-off carts, cassettes, and disks w/ a8 warez to its "club members". you will know them by their dot-matrix generated, non-graphics labels, and the carts had very flimsy white shells. i wonder if any are showing up as protos. of course, one grows up. warez are bad.

that reminds me of an arabic version commodore 64 i once saw in london. cursor at bottom right hand of screen, scrolling upwards was pretty interesting

I'm looking for a reasonably priced original Sunnyvale Atari 2600 system w/ original sticks, paddles, maybe a driving and star raider controller. I can trade a nice and complete XEGS (w/ lightgun, grey joystick, Flight Sim, keyboard), 800XL, 130XE w/ Super Video mod, or 1050 Disk Drive w/ Happy mod. Thanks.
