What is the problem with Ys exactly? I don't remember having any problems with it on PBC. I know F-16 Fighting Falcon doesn't work on Genesis and that Brazilian X-Men Mojo World game has a graphical issue.
There are a couple games like Wonderboy in Monster Land, Penguin Land, and Bomber Raid that have issues with Genesis controllers, but these are playable on Genesis with SMS controllers. The odd thing is they actually play fine with Genesis controllers when played on a JP SMS or a Genesis modded with a region switch set to the JP region.
sega retro says this about ys:
"Furthermore, the game takes advantage of a VDP mirroring bug that was fixed on Master System 2s and anything based on that hardware (including the Sega Mega Drive); consequently the game will look incorrectly on these systems."

i wasn't born early enough for most retro consoles, but my first console was a nes

btw do japan-only games from 1988-1990 count? because i know some. for example, a game based the anime osomatsu-kun was released in 1988 presumably shortly after altered beast came out in japan. http://www.segaretro.org/Osomatsu-kun_Hachamecha_Gekijou the sega retro page lists the release date as exactly christmas eve of 1988.

ok i get it now

That post says that Alex Kidd came out in the first half of 1990. How does that beg to differ with my date of January 31?
well they said at around the same time phantasy star ii and herzog zwei came out, and both of those games came out in march/april
-
Do you have a source for any of that information? As is shown on my spreadsheet, Alex Kidd was spotted in-store by someone on January 31.
here's a thread about early genesis games: http://forum.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?111913-Games-that-did-and-did-not-launch-with-the-Sega-Genesis-in-September-1989/page2&s=8b04341b4b095a1d8e7677d15375ae85 the first reply on the second page begs to differ

i checked amazon for rokenbok controllers and none of them said they worked with the genesis. this is a remote to a toy and not for use with the genesis.

zoom was released in march/april 1990 at around the same time as phantasy star ii and herzog zwei. alex kidd in enchanted castle was released at the same time as those three games.

retro gaming pricing is ridiculous. Its BS when people who have no knowledge on retro gaming that dig into their closets and find an nes and think its gold.
basically this is the kind of garbage that the retro gaming community has to go through.
yah, that's why i use a retro duo instead of original hardware
-
for some expensive games, the japanese versions are cheaper. like truxton (tatsujin) and moonwalker. games released before 1993 are region free (in this case both of the games i mentioned are region free), but you need to cut the tabs on the cartridge slot with a hot knife in order to fit japanese mega drive cartridges in an american genesis. i did this on my model 2 and puyo puyo plays perfectly. however, games released after 1993 are region locked.

At least it's not Earthbound for $200+.

yeah, don't expect me to ever buy this game, i hate spending more than $20 on a retro game. that's why virtual console, xbox live arcade, and psone classics are a thing.

i know ys is, but are there any other sega master system games incompatible with the genesis?
-
i buy them to play. thus, the only sports games i buy are baseball and football.
