After hours of research, asking questions online, searching forums, etc. I was finally able to track down some concrete information about that ataribox- specs, games, programmers, etc. I don't know if this is legitimate, if it comes from atarisa, etc, but- for what it's worth, here you go.     As for you comment below, you seem to ignore the fact that Atari was attempting to execute a contract whereby they got Dreamgears controller, electronics design and firmware for free and then would take that design elsewhere giving ZERO compensation to Dreamgear, thats called THEFT and a scam.

    As for PowerA, interesting you know that information, so I outed myself, so who are you?

    Also, since youre a stickler on proof, show us your proof re: PowerA

    I know about it from inside sources, lets see where you got it.

  3. And the fact that Atari actually has been hiding things (who the developers are, what games can be expected) and actually has avoided answering questions (why should we buy this thing?) doesn't factor in at all?

    The Register article misconstrued the interview in a way that makes it look like Atari was hiding something/not answering questions/getting defensive. If you listen to the unedited version of the interview it's clear that the actual vibe from the interview isn't as exaggeratedly bad as the article makes it out to be. But I have a feeling the author knew in his head "Most people aren't gonna listen to the full version of this shit", and put it at the bottom of the page. But the best thing for the reader to do is listen to the interview and make their own assessment of what took place.

     

    I don't know what interview you listened to, but that isn't what I got from it at all. The Register misconstrued nothing. Seriously, if this what you have to offer, you're gonna have to up your game.

    Perhaps... But again, these are all "feelings" and speculation that you have. It's not solid hard proof.

     

    I think I trust Curt Vendel's information (who is a legend around here) more than some random internet numpty. If you were sent in to do damage control, I think "Atari" should ask for their money back.

    Somebody else watch it and report back and share what you think he's playing at. I looked at the transcript and it's a bunch of word salad like "I don't know anything, don't listen to me." I haven't got time to listen to this nimrod.

  7. Mike Kennedy had Retro magazine that was going to feature articles, ads, etc for the Retro VGS / Coleco Chameleon, so it only makes sense for Atari SA to do the same for the Ataribox. We can mark that checkbox off the list now too.

     

    When they said 'ticks all the boxes', I don't think that's what they meant. :D

    I am going to go out on a limb and make a bold prediction: everyone who pledged for this non-existant console is going to be screwed.

    All the numbers on IGG shows to me is that there are lots of people with more money than sense. :)

  9. I was at the local Fry's yesterday and what did I see when I went over to the Nintendo aisle, just past the USB NES, SNES & Gamecube knockoff controllers? I saw a portable Atari™ branded handheld console for USD50 with classic Atari games on it sitting next to an Atari™ branded Flashback 8 console (can't remember the price of it, tho--I think it was around USD30 or so?).

     

    So, unlike NuTari, there are licensees out there who are bringing real Atari™ branded gaming merchandise to the stores that you can go and buy right now, if you are so inclined.

     

    Strange thing is, I thought of tacos when I saw them. To be fair, it was around lunchtime and I was getting hungry.

  10. Just to throw in my two bits...

     

    I've done a fair bit of wading thru the CD BIOS in my attempts to get it working with VJ, and I can tell you, if it works, it's because of lucky circumstances. They do absolutely NO message passing between the 68K and the DSP when reading from the CD--it's all tied to 68K instruction timing as far as I have seen. Which blows my mind, because by that time, they surely had some people there who understood multi-CPU synchronization issues, yet they *chose* to write it so that it depended the 68K's timing (which would also explain why it doesn't work 100% of the time).

  11. I do realize Jag is a very old system probably closer to Genesis and SNES than to, say, PSX, Saturn or even GBA. The core of my games would definitely need to be re-coded from scratch, and to discover whether or not such a re-code was doable is the point of this whole post. The game I would optimally like to bring to Jag is Mystik Belle. At its core, it's essentially a simple metroidvania platformer with a Dizzy-like adventure component. In this proposed conversion, the most challenging aspects would be to approximate some sort of a lighting system (I imagine a tile-based solution), and to manage my large sprites.

     

    So, the vertical resolution is locked at 200? That kind of sucks, and certainly makes it more feasible to re-scale art.

    Yes, the vertical resolution is what it is (being a byproduct of the NTSC signal), and you can get a bit more than 200 in NTSC mode. You can also double the vertical resolution if you want to work in interlaced mode, but you then halve your screen rate (30 Hz in NTSC). Also, it's more difficult to work with an interlaced screen, but it is doable.

     

    It sounds like what you want to do is certainly feasible. Feel free to keep asking questions. :)

  12. 360 horizontal could be done, but your pixels won't be square. The vertical resolution is pretty much what it is, being that the output of the Jaguar is tuned for televisions with a fixed vertical resolution. You get slightly more scanlines with PAL, but you lose some framerate for that (50 Hz for PAL, 60 Hz for NTSC).

     

    You do realize that the Jaguar is a very old machine, and as such, doesn't have things like OpenGL or DirectX? No alpha channel either. If you can live within those kind of restrictions, you should be fine, assuming there's enough bandwidth to do all the things that you want to do on the screen (and sound!).
