  1. Kaboom 3D, you have to go back and forth deeper into the screen, like Tapper!
  2. Oh yeah...and whoever developed the swordquest games!
  3. My most hated/feared... The damn red balls in keystone capers. The guy that throws daggers in private eye is pretty heinous too.
  4. Well of course I have to agree with this! I always even liked the sound it made when you got nailed. One of the sounds to this day I still rank as the best on the 2600 is the refueling sound in River Raid. I hear it in my head when I pump gas in my car.
  5. His bid might have been $1000 higher than yours; eBay's proxy bidding system only increases it by the minimum amount necessary to beat the next-highest bidder. $1 in this case. Took me a few auctions to catch on to that too. For example, if the current bid is $25 and you put your max at $50, eBay will bid $26 for you. If another bidder comes along and bids $40 as their max, eBay will automatically bid $41 for you and tell that other person they were outbid. The best way to win an auction is figure out the max you are willing to pay for something, and then enter that amount in the last minute. Hopefully, nobody will have outbid you AND it won't require your max for you to win it.
  6. I bought an Obelix I can't play because of this 1986 version! The 1983 versions are clear in regards to PAL vs NTSC. Pardom my ignorance, but I have to ask...is there a way for me to play a PAL game or would I need a different machine?
  7. I guess my original point was that despite that difference in potential between the systems (as evidenced by Donkey Kong), some versions of the same game put little effort into taking advantage of the difference.
  8. Which is why I specifically used the term version and not PORT. Regardless of who did it, it is intended to be an emulation of the same game, Donkey Kong. And they are so vastly different on the two platforms.
  9. Which? IMO Nukey is right. If a game is specially designed for the 2600 first, then it generally looks better when compared with later conversions. The River Raid for the computer seemed to play more smooth;y asnd the walls were not straight lines. In retrospect, I guess this isn't a groundbreaking revalation but I do recall playing the 8-bit version so much more!
  10. I noticed in many cases there was either a great deal of difference between the same game on 2600 vs. 8-bit or pitifully, very little! What games stand out in your memory of having HIT or MISSED the mark in this regard? Better: Donkey Kong on the Atari 400 rocked. My opinion of the 2600 game hasn't changed. River Raid had significant improvements, I thought. Same old: Kaboom added the 1812 overture. Yee haw. Then again, simplicity defined this game! Joust gameplay seemed infintely better on the 8-bit versions
  11. Testimony to the durability of the Atari: I was so disappointed when my VCS (I hadn't had a working one in years) arrived in a box with 9 cartridges and absolutely no padding or shipping materials. Just a damn carboard box. I shudder to think what it probably went through...and yet, it WORKED! I don't see that happening with an XBOX or PS2! Of course, in fairness, the electronics are a bit more sophisticated.
  12. Raleigh/Durham, with family in New Bern NC.
  13. Is it me or does the criteria for the Activision patches seem to vary wildly. I mean, some I thought were crazy hard and others ludicrously easy. Is it that I'm an inconsistent player or do you also feel like there was some inconsistency in difficulty?
  14. Just over 182,000 is my recent high score. You think it'd be better with a name like this. Don't know what my "back in the day" scores were.
  15. Hmm..come to think of it...I think it was one of the ghosts...the blue one if I recall. He was wearing a sequined studded white coat.
