To be specific, the RIGHT people remember Atari. The children of the late 70s/early 80s, the ones who would be grown up & running businesses in the era this name change happened. It makes sense to them- after all, Atari was synonymous with videogames during their impressionable youth. So, let's make people think we're synonymous with videogames by taking on that hallowed name. The fact that they were out of touch enough not to realize it would only succeed in making them synonymous with being old, outdated, & just plain crappy- as their current customer base would know Atari- is certainly a factor in them not being a notable presence at all these days.

Well, if Goodwill now is anything like Goodwill of 10 years ago... yeah, he straight-up just wanted the wheel for himself & didn't want to leave a paper trail. Id've demanded a manager or called the cops when told I couldn't get it back even though he specifically said they wouldn't want to sell it & refused to give the obligatory tax writeoff. -

Oh, I can explain the ad thing quite simply- it allows one to 'pay' for their content with their time & attention instead of money. Remember when TV was broadcast via antenna? That was 'free'- still is if you buy a digital one & can grab some signals. But nothing is truly free... you pay by watching ads. Companies like ads becuase they raise brand awareness & bring in new customers. People like ads becuase they can pay not with their limited dollars, but with their time (which they perceive themselves as having more of.) Yes, I just said people like ads, even though they say they hate them. It's the coffee thing all over again. I learned that one watching Jim Sterling (who, by the way, doesn't monetize his videos at all in favor of a pure patreon system- I'll come back to that). When you bring people into focus groups and ask them what kind of coffee they like, they say they like a rich, dark roast from freshly ground beans. When you look at what sells- it's bland, milky, and often instant. See, we care what the people around us think, so when asked what we want, we often say what we think others want to hear- not what we truly want. Saying you want thick, bitter coffee that took you 20 minutes to grind and prepare sounds good- what a connoisseur you are! But in reality? Most people would rather microwave coffee-flavored powdered milk they can drink quickly & get on with their day. So- people say they hate ads becuase it sounds good- how independent you are! But in reality? You don't want to pay money for programs on top of the internet bill, so a few seconds of ad to peck at your phone or eat your dinner is a great deal! One thing I am curious about- you keep complaining about ads, but keep adding in 'and THEN they stick their hands out for Patreon!' like it's just as bad if not worse, even though that's pretty equivalent to the hat/instrument case in front of the street performer. So- which is it? Is monetizing videos for ad revenue bad? Is Patreon bad? Are you OK with the likes of Jim Sterling, who only asks for Patreon & rarely directly (just sticking a link in the endcard, and occasionally mentioning it in the closing monolgue?) What about Game Theory, who's gone the other way and only does AdSense with no other shilling involved? In fact, they're newest video says YouTube is encouraging them to take on additional monetization by becoming a membership channel, and they said they wanted to ask their viewers first if they'd even want that. Are these guys doing it right... or do you just hate the idea of anyone on YouTube expecting payment at all, via donation or ad? -
16. Just Shapes & Beats (Switch) Saw this on the floor at PAX and snapped pics becuase it very much looked like my jam. Not super impressed with the story mode length for the $20 price (finished in 1 day via casual mode), but there are more tracks to be unlocked viz challenge mode, so I'll have more to dig out of it. Plus, it very much IS my jam- think a bullet hell where you only dodge instead of shoot back, with a crazy good techno soundtrack. Put on challenge mode for... well, a challenge, or throw on party mode and just veg out and enjoy the music. I don't regret the download.

Just a post-pax clear out of some odds & ends, see if there's any interest. Costs do not include shipping- my zip code is 98002 & weights will be listed if you want to get a feel for it- I typically round up to the nearest dollar. While I'm perfectly fine with combining items, please be aware there may be a shipping delay while I find an appropriate mailing box. If you live close by, I'm willing to set up local pickup if you can come to me. $15- PS2/PS3 Gamestop branded component cable. Works perfectly fine, I merely stumbled into a cheap first party cable & I prefer those. 9.8 ounces, shipped in a bubble mailer. $5- Universal 3DS charger. Has ends to cover all models of 2DS & 3DS, with USB into a wall outlet adapter. I've used the 3DS end, works fine. Once again, I replaced this with a first party one recently. 3.2 ounces, shipped in a bubble mailer. $5- Gameboy Advance cases. 14 total, these link together into a weird snakey game brick. 4.8 ounces, shipped in a bubble mailer. $1 (free with anything else)- DS Lite screen protectors, left over from an old accessory set. No shipping charge, these will just get tossed into a leftover Christmas card & sent via letter mail. $30- Japanese Monster Hunter World Blind Box figures, picked up at PAX from Pink Gorilla. (I never did get my Rathalos…) There's a Val Hazaak & Zorah Magdaros, outer box opened (obviously), figures never opened or assembled. Must buy together (due to lack of appropriately small boxes.) 15.1 ounces, shipped in a box.

What did you buy today?.........

I should look into what our local furry convention is called... I mean, there has to be one. We have a comic con, a horror con, a steampunk con, an MLP con, a tabletop con, 2 gaming cons, 2 anime cons, geek girl con- and of those that I've attended there's always a few furries in costume, which would suggest there's one of those around somewhere! *googles* It's Anthro Northwest. -
… WHAT thread? Flojo was literally the first reply- the thread didn't exist until that post! Plus it's a fair complaint- you stuck a poll on here. We can only choose one option- that means it's a versus thread. Oh, I own everything on this list except the Supervision and pull ALL of them out on occasion? Too bad, pick ONE! And why isn't Microvision an option, anyway? All joking aside- the Gameboy is better than the Lynx today, hands down. Yes, the Lynx LOOKS more impressive, and the couple of good games for it are great... but that's the problem, it's a couple of good games. I hit up Chip's Challenge, Stun Runner... and that's about it. As for the Gameboy? Yeah, there's more bad games, becuase there's more games in general. There's a ton more good games as a result- Kirby's Dreamland 1 and 2, Zelda: Link's Awakening, The awesome Donkey Kong port/expansion, Pyramids of Ra (not a common option but a personal favorite)… this is just a few from my personal collection, there's a ton of good stuff out there. Not to mention that, unlike the Lynx, it's very easy to find ways to play Gameboy games in an updated form. If you can get a early GameCube with a Gameboy player, you're good to go for some HD retro handheld goodness.

consoles with tiny libraries
HoshiChiri replied to masschamber's topic in Classic Console Discussion
This is an interesting question- I went with the 13-30 option. Partially becuase, as spacecadet pointed out, I'm not really aware of any systems in the 30-50 range so it makes a good cut point. But how does one determine if a console has enough software? How much is enough, anyway- assuming you play one game a week, how long do you need for it to be worthwhile? What if you play faster than that? What if the games are genres you don't like? How many more games are needed to make up for that? The mind boggles. However, I'm going to arbitrarily decide 104 is the minimum for a good, if small, library. That's enough to play one game a week for a year and hate fully half the games on the system. Since I feel like most people wouldn't bother with a system they hated half the games on, that should provide space for faster players and the genre-picky to find adequate choices before replaying titles. By the same logic, a system with 30 titles would last you under 4 months- not nessecarily low enough to avoid owning, but low enough to make one question the value in doing so. Which sounds about right for a 'tiny' distinction. -

Was having a nice, quiet day at work up until the last hour of my shift, when one of a pair of jerks fighting at the other end of the mall fired off a couple shots & got the place evacuated/lockdowned... no one hurt, but made for a lousy afternoon!
-
Jeez, crazy afternoon! I remember when I worked at the Mall of America back in 2011 there was one day when every store had to drop the shutters and lock down when a group of 30 or 40 young people started rioting after a rapper that was rumored to be doing an appearance at the mall that day didn't show up.

Consoles that make owning other consoles redunant
HoshiChiri replied to Rick Dangerous's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I take issue with every point that says 'the good games were mostly released/ported to another system'. Quality is subjective, and some people play bad games intentionally. True redunancy requires 100% of the system's library to be reliably played on another console without issues, and without modifications. A Genesis model 1 is required for the Power Base converter to render the Master system obsolete, as it won't fit other models. The Xbox line does not count, as no version of Xbox is 100% compatible with another. You missed that having a Wii U renders the Wii obsolete, as it plays Wii's full catalog & even uses its peripherals. Some systems rendered redundant can claim new viability via the right accessories. For example, a Gamecube can have a Game Boy player. Pair that with the right games and a link cable, and you've got a reason to keep a GBA (or four). A PSOne can be rendered portable-ish with an LCD screen added on. I find that stuff a lot more interesting, really. -
Well, we can safely assume it's less than $1200, which is the cheapest copy on Ebay right now & no one's buying it... but the nice & terrible thing about items without sales data is, they are worth what you can get someone to pay for it. The utter lack of any sales usually means both supply AND demand are terribly low. If I were you... well if I were you I'd keep it for bragging rights, but if I were you AND selling it, I'd: 1) Figure out how much my ideal Switch setup is, add on 15%ish for shipping and fees, and make a listing. See if there's takers. 2) Advertise- just mention anywhere you go that's relevant that you're selling this for a Switch, see if someone is interested. The hard isn't going to be setting a price, it's finding a buyer.

The Official "Thrift finds" Thread

Good to know- so essentially I can play with this thing's guts till I'm bored, then put the shell on a donor controller. Time to hit up St. Vinnie's! -
The Official "Thrift finds" Thread
HoshiChiri replied to Happy_Dude's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Honestly, that's part of why I want to fiddle with it- I like seeing the inside of different controllers & how they work, but I don't want to risk screwing up one that works. This way I can satisfy my curiosity & if somehow it comes back to life, so much the better. One question though- do you think swapping the shell is a viable idea, or are they delicate enough that even that is too much? -

HoshiChiri replied to Happy_Dude's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I had a great find today- I got an OEM PS2 memory card for $5! .... and it came with a sliver slim. It's pretty scratched up, and the controller doesn't work, but the system itself is fine. It also came with the AC adapter, but not the A/V cable... but since I just got a new 50 cent component cable last week, that's not really a problem. I'll get it cleaned up a bit after PAX, and fiddle with the controller- luckily PS2 controllers aren't too uncommon around here, so push come to shove I can swap the shell onto a different one to keep a matching set. And then- I get to figure out what to do with it. I already have my original fat ps2, and I don't really want to replace it. I'll think about it.
