  1. In reference to something RandomTerrain said:

I read an essay once which suggested Atari's poor Pac-Man port hurt the public's confidence in video games, or at least Atari. The author compared reviews of games before and after Pac-Man. The reviews from before tended to defend games as if to justify them as a legitimate hobby; the reviews after tended to pick the game apart. Even if the game got good reviews the reviews seemed jaded; the reviewers had to remind everyone how bad Pacman was

    Here it is: http://www.8bitrocket.com/2017/04/05/pac-man-electronic-games-magazine-and-the-exact-moment-atari-lost-the-video-game-war/

Electronic Games' review of VCS Zaxxon is clear evidence that they were biased and didn't know what they were talking about. To call Zaxxon "the very best home video game cartridge in the land" is simply insane. Not only does it bare less resemblance to its arcade forebearer than Pac-man, it also plays considerably worse.

  2. Sadly, even Coleco Chamelon's pitch of "play indie steam games off of cartridges" was more compelling than anything Atari has offered to date.

"Open system" is really only a selling point to hackers/tinkerers which is a small niche within the already niche market of "people who still care about the Atari brand"

Atari would be better off developing a lineup of NEW games based on their IP library that would get people excited.

Jeff Minter's Tempest 4000 is a perfect example... if that was a timed exclusive for Ataribox it might actually generate a few sales... (as long as it was accompanied by a handful of other equally compelling titles)

Pair a popular IP's with a hot game designer... go the classic Activision route and try to promote the desiginers like gaming rockstars.. and bring back some of the original guys.. David Crane tried and failed to kickstart a Pitfall spirtual successor "Jungle Adventure".. .bring that to Ataribox!!

Get HSW to make a new Yar’s Revenge. Get Tod Frye to do Swordquest Airworld!

They could do the same with:

    Centipede

    Missile Command

    Alone in the Dark

    Ninja Golf

    Gauntlet

    Warlords

    Crystal Castle

    Adventure

    Food Fight

    Secret Quest

    Battlezone

    Asteroids

    Black Widow

    Major Havoc

  3. If the Ataribox is just going to put on 2600 games and ignore the rest of the Atari's rich lineage, I'm out at that point. Sorry, but there are so many other 2600 playing solutions (most notably AtGames' Atari Flashback 8 Activision Edition) and streaming options (like the $70 Roku Streaming Stick +) that if this thing can't delve past the 2600 it is DOA in my opinion and it deserves to go down in flames.

we don't NEED another box to play 2600 games... what we need is a new box to play Minecraft and Terraria and stream Hulu... or maybe not...

  4. some other early non-space games with black backgrounds, and I'm sure there's a few more:

    Basketball

Breakout (Super Breakout apparently takes place in outer space - lol)

    Dodge 'Em

    Missile Command

    Night Driver

    Pengo

    Taz

Pengo and Taz were later releases

  5. Pong Sports is the only game with Pong in the title.

Pong Sports is a better title. I don't know why Atari didn't want to exercise their own IP/Trademark more prominently. I guess this was prior to the IOC aggressively litigating any and all use of the trademark "Olympics" without a sponsorship or license and I highly doubt Atari would have paid to use it.

  6. For me, ET and Journey Escape. ET is frustrating as all get out, but I think that's some of the games overall charm. Or being stubborn lol. Journey Escape is I think more of a shmup with the exception of not shooting everything. Plus I like the fact that it actually plays music. So far other than my Juno First homebrew, I have yet to find another Atari game that actually has a music track. Although I'm sure there are.

Moon Patrol has a music track

  7. Like this? Removing the reflect register calls provided the minimum space needed to show all 4 directions. That was one of the space-saving techniques which did not work out I mentioned earlier.

It's amazing how much such little thing can totally change the feel of the game. Visually it looks so much more like the arcade, but I noticed that it highlights the other differences in more stark contrast and now the original sounds seem more out of place. I still love the design of the original vcs pacman, even if he can only face left and right... His eye and his 3 frames of mouth animation give him a lot of personality (I also get a kick out of how he does a little moonwalk, when he eats a ghost while traveling left)

  8. I had already had my TI-99/4a for a couple years, by the time I got my VCS, so by that time, it felt like a bit of step backward for me. I still enjoyed playing it but it just couldn't compete with the TI's Donkey Kong, TI-Invaders, Parsec, and Munch Man. Coming back to VCS as an adult, I have grown much more appreciative of it.
