Yeah, they killed the sequel. I hope they decide to actually make it someday, though. It would probably be in 3D just like the modern KOF games, but it would be nice if they actually made it in 2D instead in the same style as the Neo Geo games. If there's one game that never got the sequel that it deserved, it's this one. It's like Terry's story is incomplete, especially since they planned and started working on a sequel that ended up not happening.

Now that I think about it, SNK did tease a new system. Hopefully it's actually a new Neo Geo instead of another emulation box, but even their emulation boxes are really good recently. Apparently the MVSX is actually extremely good, so hopefully they make a really nice new system with new games like a sequel to Mark of the Wolves. I'd buy it for sure.

Wow, I never knew that there was a planned sequel! This would have been awesome, GMTW was/is still one of the most balanced fighters out there. We can hope for a true 2D sequel!

    Hi guys,

Interesting. A Neo-Geo homebrew in development called. "The Eye of Typhoon". A title released for the 3DO, PC, and on the sole Korean market. Originally developed by Viccom. A Korean partner with SNK. Looks really nice. ;-)

From the description off the link.

    TeoT

The Eye of Typhoon is the second fighting game developed for the Neo.Geo MVS by Viccom, a Korean partner and friend company of SNK.

Its release was limited to PC CD-Rom and 3DO versions in 1996, and on the sole Korean market.

As for the prototype that was initially developed for the Neo.Geo, it was never published and has yet to reappear...

Thus, The Eye of Typhoon has only reached an extremely limited audience, be it at the time of its release, or thanks to the more recent means of distribution and emulation. An unfortunate fate for a game with such a strong identity and delightful exoticism.

The aim of The Eye of Typhoon [ Tsunami Edition / Saiki ] project is to bring this good old arcade production from the first half of the 90s back to the Neo.Geo!! the plateform for which it was originally intended! ;-)

However, it is not a direct port of the 3DO and PC versions, but rather a complete overhaul based on the graphics and sound material designed by Viccom.

An original program  that will pay a tribute to the system and the good old way of making video games.

Our ambition is to produce a new Neo.Geo game that combines the expectations and excitement of a brand new game to the unique feeling of getting one's hands on a long lost treasure !

Well, you guessed it -> the flavour of the arcades of the good old days is what we're aiming for! 🙂

    Here's the YouTube video

    From the description

"The Eye Of Typhoon [ Tsunami Edition ] / [ Saiki ] for the Neo.geo! +++ Making of included +++ It mainly uses C language and custom tools designed for the occasion."

    Anthony..

    Hey guys,

This looks awesome! How are we so lucky to continue to see these games being released all these years later! Happy Gaming!

Hi all, been following the thread for a while, and a big fan of Neo Geo for a long time.

AES was completely unobtainable for me as a child, so Sega Mega Drive it was.  I would look at the adverts in my gaming magazines, only to be reminded of the massive costs.

I only ever really got to see Neo Geo via TV shows such as GamesMaster in the UK.

Fast forward, I've finally picked up an MVS board, and plenty of other supplies as I've decided - at this point questionably - to build myself a US style MVS red cabinet - MVS one slot, with CRT and all.

It's a new project for me, something I've not really done before.  Anyway here are some pics, not much as yet, but hopefully will take shape over the next few weeks.

    Hi guys,

Feature: Samurai Shodown Director "Cried Out In Surprise" When He Saw The Switch Version

He wants to reboot Garou: Mark of the Wolves next

Switch fans have had to wait a little longer than their PS4 and Xbox One-owning pals when it comes to SNK's Samurai Shodown reboot, but the important thing is that the game has made it to Nintendo's hybrid console intact – and it's really quite an achievement.

We were fortunate enough to get the chance to speak with the game's director Nobuyuki Kuroki prior to its release. Kuroki began his career with SNK as an artist working on the Fatal Fury series, and would also contribute to games such as Real Bout Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting 3, Samurai Shodown 64 and the legendary Garou: Mark of the Wolves.

When SNK went bankrupt, Kuroki would team up with fellow SNK alumni Takashi Nishiyama at Dimps, where he worked on several Sonic titles, including Sonic Rush and Sonic Unleashed. He returned to SNK in 2014 and worked on SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy and The King of Fighters XIV before assuming the role of Game Director on the Samurai Shodown reboot.

Nintendo Life: Before we speak more specifically about the Switch version of Samurai Shodown, are you pleased with how the game has been received on other platforms?

For sure we are very pleased. As a unique game, we’ve heard a lot of opinions from our fans, and it seems that they are quite satisfied with it.

Kuroki-san, your history with the series goes all the way back to Samurai Shodown 64. How valuable has that experience been when it comes to creating a new entry?

    Nobuyuki Kuroki Nobuyuki Kuroki

The Samurai Shodown team at that time all cherished our characters. They prepared tons of detailed profiles and illustrations for each one. Above all, their passion and love towards this game were astonishing. As a young and new guy back in the day, I was impressed by how amazing they were. 20 years have passed, and I’m still surprised by the fact that I myself am working on this title. The stories and experiences I learnt from the team definitely helped us when creating this new Samurai Shodown. In particular, the experience of colour design that is usually not heard of in other game designs was helpful in the development.

What was it like stepping into the role of game director for this entry?

As I mentioned above, I have been working with the staff who first made Samurai Shodown. Can this game developed in 2019 surpass the old one created by the staff at that time? Can we develop something that will satisfy those fans who have been playing this game for over 20 years? These questions really put pressure on me. But there is no answer during the development, and we won’t know if any decision is wrong. Therefore, when we found out that our fans are satisfied after the release, and when we were praised by those who first made the title, we were absolutely elated. I felt a great sense of relief when our work had been accepted.

You've used Unreal Engine to create Samurai Shodown. What benefits do you get from using a middleware engine as opposed to creating your own in-house engine and tools?

In particular, it helps us a lot when designing the graphics. We couldn’t make the illustrations we wanted when developing KOF14, but with Unreal Engine, we can now reach the goal. Of course, it was not easy. Unreal Engine is good at realistic expressions, while Samurai Shodown is more like manga, so it was hard for the team to make it less realistic. For programmers, it seems difficult, but for our artists, the engine is easy to use.

How challenging was it to port the game to Switch? What concessions have been made?

The most challenging point was developing the Switch version to run at 60FPS and to make the graphics not inferior to other platforms. I think game developers will understand how difficult it is to increase the frame rate without changing the style of the graphics. Our goal is to optimize the graphics for the Switch without being noticed by our fans. If fans cannot tell the difference, that means Safari Games who worked on the porting process did a great job.

Your colleague, Yasuyuki Oda, has previously mentioned that he is open to the idea of 'guest' fighters appearing in the game. Are there any plans for this?

Sorry that we cannot disclose anything yet at this moment.

    Switch SamuraiShodown 01Switch SamuraiShodown 02
    Switch SamuraiShodown 03Switch SamuraiShodown 05

Sticking with that topic, Terry Bogard has recently made his Super Smash Bros. debut. Could we see any characters from Samurai Shodown appear in that game, too?

Sakurai-san would be the best person to ask.

What direction will the Samurai Shodown series take now? Will we see a full-blown sequel, or is the plan to perhaps focus on reviving other SNK properties, such as Art of Fighting, for example?

We cannot disclose anything concerning the future plans for Samurai Shodown at this moment. What I can say is that the development team is working on King of Fighters 15 as well as DLC characters for Samurai Shodown. Please look forward to our upcoming 2nd season of Samurai Shodown and KOF15. Personally, I wish that we can revive Garou: Mark of the Wolves.

Finally, do you have a message for Switch-owning SNK fans out there who are looking forward to playing Samurai Shodown?

When I saw how Samurai Shodown looked on the Switch, I couldn’t help but cry out in surprise. The amazing graphics moving on the Switch’s screen really touched me. Players can now enjoy the game on a smaller screen with the same excitement as on other platforms. This is something I think everyone will enjoy. We really want players to experience that feeling of exhilaration and tension only Samurai Shodown can provide. Please pick it up and give it a try!

    Anthony...

An awesome article, thanks for sharing buddy!

  10. Hey guys, long time no see! I figured I would stop by and put a link to Sonic Pocket Adventure for the Neo Geo Pocket Color! I just played the game on the channel as a part of a retrospective week about Sonic since the movie is coming out this week! This is one of my favorite Sonic games and is one of the best games on the system! I remember being so excited for this game when it was released because Sonic had just made the successful jump to 3D on the Dreamcast and I thought there would never be another 2D release. Boy was I surprised to get this classic! Enjoy and Happy Gaming!

  13. Hey guys, long time no see! I hope all are well. I have been playing all of my MVS titles through again as I just picked up a Neo Geo MVS 1 slot board for around $50 to act as a stand in due my 2 slot biting the dust. The darn battery I put in the the PCB 2 years ago has already started leaking and it leaked onto a video processing chip. Just a quick update. I hope all is well. I just got an all time personal high score on Blazing Star at https://youtu.be/0X-bDKgQamA  I hope you all have a Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Gaming!

This looks awesome, I hope that it has micro switches in the joystick! I wonder why they included games that are already included in the Neo Geo mini, seems redundant. Oh well looks pretty cool though. The idea of attaching it to the mini is a nice touch though once it is all plugged in and hooked to the tv it would seem to be cumbersome. But still seems interesting! If this makes them continue to make great games like Samurai Showdown 7 then we are in great shape!

Earlier this year, SNK announced that it was working on new console hardware after the Neo Geo Mini had sold better than expected. Two new system variants were confirmed, and it was stressed that these would be 'new' and would be independent of the existing Neo Geo Mini system.

Today, the company has posted a tweet which reveals this Neo Geo hardware will offer "a modern design and a wonderful play feeling" and that it can "link it to NEOGEO Mini". This new system will apparently "provide you a NEOGEO journey that you have never experienced".

A Next-Gen NEOGEO hardware is coming after NEOGEO Mini.
With a modern design and a wonderful play feeling and you can even link it to NEOGEO Mini, the new hardware will provide you a NEOGEO journey that you have never expeirenced.

Stay tuned for more information!#SNK #NEOGEO

What could this mysterious new machine possibly be? The Neo Geo Mini line of systems has mined SNK's back catalogue fairly comprehensively, although there are a handful of Hyper Neo Geo 64 titles which could potentially be republished on a new mini-console. Could we see an all-in-one Neo Geo system which covers the company's entire history, including pre-Neo Geo arcade, Neo Geo, Hyper Neo Geo 64 and even Neo Geo Pocket?

However, it sounds like SNK is positioning this as a 'new' machine which will offer brand-new experiences, so it's really anyone's guess what form it will take. Perhaps SNK will follow a similar approach to Atari and its all-new VCS, or maybe it will create a console that's capable of rivalling the Switch, PS5 and next-gen Xbox? The latter seems unlikely given the incredible amount of investment involved, but who knows?

Let us know your prediction with a comment below.

    Anthony..

I am hoping for some new games in long dormant series! Maybe a new Metal Slug, World Heroes, Blazing Star/Pulstar Reboot, or King of Fighters laced with all the classics from the original systems!

    Hi guys,

SNK, next is 'Neo Geo 2' and 'Metal Slug' IP

    Views 16 898 | Ruri Web | Input 2019.04.16 (13:52:23)

On the 16th, SNK held an enterprise briefing session at Studio # 5, Conrad Seoul Hotel, 6th floor, located in Youngdeungpo-gu. In addition to its IP licensing business, the company, which has a popular IP, is promoting console, PC mobile game development and publishing, and IP-based merchandising. It is the second IPO listing challenge after the IPO press conference in December last year.

    snk1.jpg

"We want to make it possible for gamers to be a game company that provides better games," said SNK's CEO, who is in charge of the presentation. "In the past three years, Korean mobile game companies have been facing a difficult situation, In the meantime, SNK could continue to grow. "

    snk2.jpg

Because I already had an IPO reporter conference ( https://bbs.ruliweb.com/news/read/116117 ), this time I started to emphasize IP power. KOF '98 UM, which has annual sales of 200 billion won, KOF 's all - star, KOF: Destiny and Net - Marble, which brought in the most new users in the first month, And Samurai Shodownun M, which achieved the top spot in Wichat's sales, and will share 10% ~ 12% of the total revenue.

    snk3.jpg

    snk4.jpg

    snk5.jpg

    snk6.jpg

In this part, former representative, "SNK game is not a memory arm, but some people revive the IP to service a new game is not easy, and KOF IP three games over the past three years, but the same IP, but each time The genres are different, and the graphics are evolving. "" In the case of Samurai Shodown, the MMORPG genre was successful. "

    snk7.jpg

In particular, the number of IP contracts before July 2016 was 10, but the number of IP contracts since August 2016 is 28, and 8 contracts have been concluded only in the first half of 2019.

    snk8.jpg

The next release was the console game "Samurai Showdown", which was previously released in GDC and Japan. This work, which is being made using Unreal Engine, has brought the graphics quality to a level that can be recognized globally and will be released in Korea on June 27th with PS4 and Xbox One. Former president predicted that the game would be the game that opens the future of SNK.

    snk9.jpg

However, IP licensing game, which is the driving force of sales growth, is still taking a high place in the new pipeline. In July 2018, 5 new IPs, 9 new IPs in July 2019, and 9 new IPs in July 2020 And VRs and block chains are also receiving offers for IP. The sales volume of Neo Geomini is also more than expected, so we are planning Neo Geo 2 and Neo Geo 3.

    snk10.jpg

The company plans to achieve high sales without development, marketing, and human resources investments in the IP licensing business. Rapidly growing from July sales of KRW 4.1 billion in July 2018 to KRW 38.2 billion in July 2018.

    snk11.jpg

    snk12.jpg

SNK, which is collaborating with big publishers such as Netmarble and Tencent, plans to expand its IP licensing games globally across Asia, China, and Japan. In 2020, Tencent's Metal Slug mobile game will be launched soon after the sale of foreign games. The former CEO stressed that the ROE of major global game companies declined from 2016 to 2017 thanks to this structure, but that SNK achieved high growth.

    snk13.jpg

    snk14.jpg

The localization strategy is to expand the base for Asian emerging markets such as Taiwan and Vietnam, to enter the IP licensing business, the KOF All Star, the Samurai Showdown M and the Endream's KOF (tentative name), and strengthen the Chinese business through collaboration with major publishers. Summarized. In particular, after the establishment of a Korean corporation, sales increased from KRW 4.5 billion to KRW 18.7 billion. Unlike before, local corporations were able to jump into sales and planning to accelerate growth.

    snk15.jpg

The future growth strategy is vertical integration through the existing stable license of the first stage live game, the second stage IP licensing and self-developed game, maximizing IP power through M & A of the third stage IP holder, and M & A of the fourth stage game developer. "SNK was a loss-making company at the time of the acquisition, but it succeeded in making a turnaround with IP alone," said Jeon, who said, "We will actively take M & A deals with IP holders through open- "There are about 180 SNK employees, and we will strengthen our support for the development workforce so that we can show two console games each year," he added.

Below is a summary of the question and answer with the vice president Kim Seon-jin,

    ● By January 2019, net profit rose sharply to 24.6 billion won. What are the earnings improvement factors?

I: The biggest reason is that it includes the Chinese samurai Showdown M sales for two months, and the net slip of KOF All Star and Ikor in the future, and Samurai Showdown for console, which has gained a bigger response in North America and Europe, Will rise.

    ● I have said that the contract amount per case has risen by 14%. What is the standard and what is the future direction?

I: As demand grows, contracts have risen more this year, and 14% are average. The Chinese government has said that it will give it a pay-as-you-go policy in the future, and it has turned its direction to service a game of good quality, and more offers are coming in. Currently, about 80 billion won out of sales of 145 billion won is IP license sales.

    ● Even if we lower the offer price, it is still high. Are you confident of listing this year?

I: It is 9 to 10 times lower than the P / E if we continue to grow.

    ● Samurai Shodownun M failed in the domestic box office, and the KOF All Star's sales in Japan were not long-term. What are your efforts to improve this perception?

I'm :The market that Netmarble sees as main is global including Korea including Japan, and the Japan open strategy itself does not proceed with CBT. So I was forced to do the localization work for 10 months, but it is expected to make a lot of profit in the global market like Marble Future Fight by adding new content while supplementing the problem. In the case of Samurai Shodownun M, there are three versions in detail, and the 19-year version, the one-store version, and the 12-year version, which can deal with items, are generated to generate billions of sales and are also capable of long-term operation.

    ● Although the KOSDAQ situation was not good in December last year, I can not deny that the price was too high. Even now, if I take it to the top, I will go beyond Webzen. If Bend falls below the bottom, do you intend to do the listing? Or are you going to watch the market?

I: I want to emphasize that net profit is high, and there is no company with profit structure similar to ours in Korea. Webzen has only one IP, and we have over 200 IPs covering the console area, which is difficult for Korean companies to access. In fact, SNK, which has been selling well in North America and Europe in the 90s, is a company that could be a little more successful. It is difficult to talk about the progress of the listing because it needs to discuss with other people in the company.

    ● How much is domestic sales of Neo Geomini? And the Neo Geo 2 and 3 mentioned above mean Neo Geo Mini's successor?

Kim: Domestic sales have remained at the level of several million units. Neo Geo 2 and 3 are not the followers of Mini.

    ● We are also in the process of hardware business. Do you plan to have a publishing organization in the future?

Kim: Because of cost issues, there is no plan to equip the publishing organization. The hardware side is turning development and distribution outsourcing.

    ● Is Neo-Geo 2 the successor of Neo Geomini?

Kim: I can not comment on details, but Neo Geo 2 will be in the middle of an open platform with Neo Geomini in a closed form.

    ● KOF, Samurai Shodown Next is likely to be Metal Slug IP.

Kim: Yes. Metal Slug is the most anticipated mobile game under development by Tiny Studio, a subsidiary of Tencent. Apart from this, Metal Slug based console game is also under development. In addition, SNK Heroines, which sold 300,000 units in the global market, will also use their IP-based derivatives strategy. In fact, some companies have already inquired about SNK heroes IP.
