More:
1. P.I.T.S., while not a game, is certainly unique, and should be on that list.
2. Was EOTB released for any other system?
3. Centipede (proto) has a Millipedesque move zone and other features not found in other versions of the game. Does this make it unique?
4. Lynx Reloaded has two minigames -- they both should be on that list.
5. STUN Runner's 3D effect is achieved by using scaled sprites on the Lynx, if I recall. Is this unique amongst gaming systems?
Well, I understand that the Lynx community would want to have as most games as possible in the Lynx library, but I´m not going to include demos/protos for the sake of it, I hope you can understand that.
That´s why I´ve added a new category: Non-games, Homebrew and others, where I´ll put all of the non-games, or games programmed by a small company (as stated by Atariage itself).
Maybe I´ll add a small protos section if someone can give me enough info.
-
That´s why I didn´t want to include anything beyond 1994

-
Nes version added.
I expected some more comments on the thread. Maybe I didn´t choose the right game?
-
Why not open up this list to every year that there has been a commercial release for the Lynx? Telegames did, after all, release several games in 1996-7, Songbird has several excellent latter-day products, and the amazing Alpine Games -- surely the greatest technical achievement on the Lynx (so far) -- popped out just a little over two years ago.
Well, I made the list considering only the years that Atari supported the system. If anyone can give me a list of 1995-96-97 releases, they´ll be included too, but nothing newer than that.
-
Updated. Any more info?
-
Just a few weeks ago I got a Lynx I (boxed) with:
-Chip´s Challenge (ridged)
-Stun Runner
-Pac-Land
-Todd´s Adventures in Slime World
all for 25€ without shipping (5€)
That same week I saw on Ebay a boxed Lynx 2 with Roadblasters that finished at 62€. So I´d say I got a pretty good deal.
-
First, let me explain this. I´ve thought of doing a topic like the "Game of the week..." you can see in other forums, but with some differences. The Lynx doesn´t have that many games and this forum is a bit slow, so it won´t be a "Game of the week.." but more a "Game of the 2-3 weeks"
Also, there´s NO time limit to submit your opinion and scores. You can do it even if the next thread has been posted.More important, Lynx info on the web is a bit scarce. So we can gather here all of the info about the game we can. It will be fun, I´m sure, and everyone can help. If people like the idea, I´ll continue with more games. If not, well, nobody could tell me I haven´t tried
. Let´s start, OK?
Game Info

Name: Pac-Land
Company: Atari
Year: 1991
Genre: Platformer
Multiplayer: 2-player alternatively
Other versions: Arcade, C-64, MSX, T-16, Spectrum, ST, Nes, PSX (Namco Museum volume 4)
Is the Lynx version the best one? Aside from the Arcade, I´d say yes, it is, along with the T-16 one.
Description
Pac-Man is back for his most dangerous mission yet. He must avoid deadly ghosts and perilous obstacles to help the beautiful fairy princess Buttercup find her way through Pac-Land. If he can find the mysterious Power Pellets, he will have the strength to defeat the ghosts and complete his quest. But where are the Power Pellets? And does Pac-Man have enough time to find them?

(in your post, you can tell us your opinion of the game, what do you think is the best/worst aspect of the game or give it a score out of 10, and I´ll do a brief summary and include it in the initial post)
"It´s initial look might make you it looks too simple, but inside Pac-Land lies one of the best and most addictive platformers on the Lynx, with more secrets and depth that you could think initially. The only real negative point is that the control is a bit "imprecise" but still, a very good game. 8/10" (Damon Plus)
Nice try, but suffers from some control issues that aren't present in the arcade version. I find the floating logs particularly frustrating, to the point where it isn't even fun to play anymore. Also, in the arcade version, Pac-Man has those cute cartoon-style eyes. On the Lynx, his eyes are shaped like, well, Pac-Man. Like those grotesque Raggedy Ann dolls and some editions of Mickey Mouse. Ugly. 5/10" (dogcorn)
It's certainly a game that I can take in small doses however, as the wonderful cartoon graphics, and soundtrack make it a pleasant gaming experience so long as I don't try too hard to play this game on a serious level by purposely going for high-scores for instance. A worthwhile addition as a novelty game for the Lynx IMO (Gunstarhero)
How to play
When the game starts, Pac-Man is walking down the street in Pac-Town. The screen shows the current score, the high score, the number of Pac-Men remaining and the number of time tablets left. Pac-Man must complete each level before the time tablets disappear. Pac-Man can walk slowly through Pac-Town and enjoy the beautiful
scenery. If he does this, though, he will not survive long. Press the joypad twice to make Pac-Man run.
Along the way, Pac-Man will see many obstacles. Press the A button to make Pac-Man jump over obstacles. When Pac-Man comes to a pool, he must jump at the end of the jumping ramp. Pump the joypad as fast as you can to give Pac-Man enough power to clear the dangerous waters! Pac-Man can't swim, you know.
Pac-Man's favorite food is fruit. And Pac-Land is full of delicious cherries and strawberries! But he's got to find them, so keep your eyes open as you run through Pac-Land.Yellow Power Pellets make Pac-Man invincible for a few seconds. That means he can munch ghosts, especially Sue, for big points.
If Pac-Man survives long enough, he takes Buttercup to her home. Then, one more round and Pac-Man will see his own Pac-Family. Of course, Buttercup will get in trouble again. Then Pac-Man must go on another rescue mission. Unfortunately, every rescue mission is a little more dangerous than the last.
Tips
(you can submit your own tips too!)
Sometimes, jumping on an obstacle will reveal a hidden treasure to help Pac-Man on his way. Pac-Man can even push some things to find special treasures. If he pushes the right objects, he can find hard hats that protect
him from falling baby ghosts, invisible powers so he can run through ghosts unharmed, balloons for bonus points, even a special warp to take him to more advanced rounds! (from the manual)
Sure is the purple ghost who always chases Pac-Man everywhere he goes. If Pac-Man can catch her, after catching the four other ghosts, a timer capsule will appear awarding him points for his remaining time and giving him a new time bar. (from the manual)
At the end of every round, when Pac-Man is walking slowly, you can jump at the end to get more points. If the game stops your jump just before you touch the ground, you can get 7650 points! BTW, that´s Namco in Japanese. (Damon Plus)
When you find a power pellet, just wait until at least 2 or 3 enemies appear, this way you´ll sure get lots of points! (Damon Plus)
Secrets/Cheats
At round 2, push the third log to the left. You will end that round (starting Trip 3) and get rewarded with 80,000 points.
If you get the high score and enter your initials as "330NE", you will start with 10 extra lives (dogcorn, extracted from the Lynx catalog)
Highscore system and table
-When you eat a power pellet, you´ll get these points for eating ghosts consecutively: 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, and then 7650 from the 6th ghost on.
-At the end of every round, you can get three different amount of points depending on when you stopped: middle-air (100 points), a moment before touching the ground (1000) and just before touching the ground (7650).
Highscore table
(starting from the beggining, specify if you used the warp cheat)
1-Damon Plus (192,110 points, round 11)

Oh man, why am I forgetting that game again and again?
It came out in 1991 -
If the game is playable in other platform, but the Lynx version is, while identical in gameplay, worse/better/has extra modes, it will be not exclusive (Like Battlezone, for example, or Lemmings). Of course, that features would be explained if they exist (like the Easter Egg that I forgot).
Exclusive ones are games that you can only play on the Lynx. While you can play Gauntlet in its core in a lot of systems, you can´t play that version if it´s not with a Lynx. I hope you understand me.
-
Ok, I need info on Rygar and Ninja Gaiden, and maybe more errors on the list.
Thanks for the answers.
-
That´s how I did it. Strangely, I couldn´t find any more Shangai versions.
However, the game could be different even if they have the same name, that´s why I´m asking for help here.

I think it´s pretty accurate, but there might be one mistake or two. Looking at it, which one do you think was the best and worst game for the Lynx?
Best: 1990, I think. Such good games like Klax, Ninja Gaiden, Slime World, APB, Paperboy, Toki and Warbirds were released, and it also had the biggest number of games released. 1989 and 1991 are close though.
Worst: Not counting 1994 (it wouldn´t be fair), the worst year has to be 1992. Just look at the release list. Basketbrawl? Dirty Larry? Kung Food? Pit Fighter? Power Factor? World Class Soccer?
-
I´ll use the adaptor I have then. I was worried because when I played my Genesis (didn´t have the old adaptor), in less than an hour, the adaptor was very hot I and had to stop playing.
But strangely, that doesn´t happen with my Lynx. I was playing for more than an hour yesterday (Chip´s Challenge is GOOD!) and it was just like if I had not been playing.
BTW, I´m thinking in getting some new games already. I have 2 choices now:
-Crystal Mines 2 and Xybots pack (unopened): 10€
-Crystal Mines 2, Xybots, Steel Talons, Super Skweek, Kung Food (unopened): 25€
The price is the same, because either way I´ll pay 5€/game. But I want to know if the extra games in the second pack (Steel Talons, Super Skweek and Kung Food) are worth it. Yes, I know that KF is not worth it XD.
-
After receiving the package, I opened it (duh!). Man, the Lynx has a more resistent box than that of the Game Gear. It´s only a bit deteriorated, while my Game Gear box is, well, in a very bad shape.
The system has come with the instructions and all, in a better shape than it is appreciated in the photos I posted.
Bad thing is that it was Sunday, so no stores were open around here. I had to use 4 new batteries and 2 used ones
This thing is HUGE! I think it´s even bigger than the Gamegear. I remember putting the GG in a pocket when I was a child, and I barely can put half of the lynx into one!
(In fact, it is as large as 2 DS´s). Huge, but it has a nice feel in your hands that I can´t quite explain.Pac-Land and Chip´s Challenge were in good condition (8.5/10 and 7.5/10 respectively I´d say), while the Slime World and Stun Runner boxes were pretty bad (6/10 and 5/10). I opened the weird placed cartridge slot, inserted the game (in a weirder way I´d say, facing the system?
) and started playing.Stun Runner: First game I tried was Stun Runner (the only one that couldn´t try on an emulator). Definitely impressive, altough a bit less than what I expected after reading some opinions (I have to say that I only tried it for the first stage to see if it worked). Nice graphics, and potentially good, addictive gameplay.
Chips Challenge: I knew this game before, so I can´t really say much about it. One thing that bothered me was that it was a bit hard to follow what was happening on the screen when the character moved. Another good one, for sure.
Pac-Land: Something similar happened with this one, altough not as bad (I guess that the screen is not as good as it used to be after all these years). Basic platforming, but a one that might get you addicted without knowing exactly why.
Slime World: I enjoyed this one a lot when I tried it, so I knew what to expect. I think I´ll play this one a lot, it has a very original premise and fun, metroid-esque gameplay.
I didn´t play it much because of the batteries, but it has left quite a good impression on me. I´ll probably collect games for this system (along with the DC and DS) seeing as they´re not hard to find, even unopened, and that there are about 70 offical releases.
BTW, I have 2 questions:
1) I used a cheap AC adapter with 1A and 9V, BUT 18W instead of 3.6W. Could I damage my Lynx?
2) I don´t want to stress the screen too much. It is better to reduce the contrast and play with the system from a different point of view instead of looking directly at the screen? (I´m sure you undestand what I´m trying to say
) -
Well, I finally bought it. Now I only have to wait for it to arrive. I´ll post my impressions as soon as I have it in my hands.
Luckily, I know a place that sells Lynx games complete for 10€ each. There won´t be too much competition, because nobody collects for the Lynx here.
-
I bought these games last week at a shop for 10€.

But, my 2600 stopped working, so I returned them to the same shop. I´ve read that those two are uncommon I think, is that true? I hope not, because they´ve already been sold again

-
Thanks for your help. I didn´t intend to collect for the system, but that doesn´t mean that I won´t if I get it. In fact, If I like the system (and I´m sure I will), I´ll probably collect games for it.
They are pretty rare to find here (almost impossible if it´s not in online stores and the like), but, on the other side, very very few people collect them, making the games cheap (but not the system, strangely). I´ve seen games selling for 10€ complete, and even packs of 2 unopened games for the same price.
PS: Is the Chip´s Challenge cart rare? Is that ridged one. Also, if I use a generic AC power supply, will it damage the system? (just like the Game Gear speakers get damaged?).
-
I dunno about $30 Euro, I would think more like $30 USD ( or $20 EURO).
20 euro? Spain is a pricey country for videogames. The guy is selling the system and people are going crazy (there´s already more than 10 people waiting if I don´t buy it). That means I´m getting quite a bargain, I think
BTW, I´ve reading this forum a bit, and the Chip´s Challenge game is the ridged one. Isn´t it a bit rare?
-
I didn´t intend to collect for the Lynx, but a guy is selling me this:
http://img157.imageshack.us/my.php?image=lynx001wp9.jpg
How much should I pay? (I don´t have any idea of rarity about Lynx games. BTW, it´s an European one) Thanks a lot.
I would pay 30 euros. It is an used Lynx I with paint coming off here and there. The Chips Challenge is one of my favorites. At ebay people have got them around 20 without games lately.
But it is a big parcel so you will end up paying a lot for getting it shipped also.
--
Regards,
Karri
Thanks for the answer. The guy is selling it for 25 euros+ shipping. 31€ with shipping included doesn´t seem bad at all, doesn´t it? (there are about 8 more people waiting in line after me). I´ve seen the system sell with 6 games for 85€, and with 3 games but no box (either in games or system) for 55€. I think it´s pretty rare around here.
I think I´ll buy it. I´m only collecting currently for the Dreamcast and the DS, although I´ve collected for other systems like the Nes, Genesis, Snes or even the 2600 in the past. But this is a good chance to get a good system that is in, if not an excelent condition, a pretty good one at least. I don´t like the lack of an AC adapter or the paint coming off, but, oh well, you can´t get it all, right?

-

Are these the rules?
You can:
-Vote for up to 10 original cartridge games and/or
-Vote for up to 5 Super Charger games and/or
-Vote for up to 5 homebrews.
First post edited. I haven´t updated the list because you are the one who has that Excel sheet. This topic is yours as much as is mine :-)
-
I agree completely. AA really makes you feel the system is still alive. I should add, that is pretty rare to find a forum that discusses about the GAMES, if you know what I mean.
-
Seriously, I always end up playing the 2600 after visiting Atariage! . I always come back to the AA forums from time to time and, even though I don´t post much, I enjoy inmensely reading about the interesting discussions about the 2600 and its games. You guys never let me forget how great of a system it was
PS: Thanks for making my "Top 100 games" a sticky! You guys rock!!!
