  1. I love Secret of Evermore. A lot of people make the mistake of passing it off as merely an American Secret of Mana clone, and while that description is true, the gameplay is completely fun and amazing. Definitely worth checking out.
  2. I was born in '84, so the Colecovision was already discontinued before I had a chance to experience its heyday. The NES was my earliest "go to" console. But my best friend had an older brother who would break out his Colecovision when we were around, and I loved playing it. As the years went on and I could afford my own things, I had to get one! I love older games in general, and the Colecovision has an amazing library considering its short life.
  3. All this worry over Tommo and Blaze... I don't think either one of them are actually producing this thing. Aren't they just the distributors for the US and UK? Come to think of it, I don't truly know who IS making them, or even if it's being offered in Japan. The Japanese wikipedia page for the Neo Geo X lists the old proposed lineup of games, which means its very out of date, which possibly suggests it's not getting released there.
  4. Those Leisure Suit Larry screens look awesome. I've been wondering if the CV could pull off something like Maniac Mansion, like the Commodore 64 version using the Roller Controller for a cursor. Another fun C64 to CV project could be Barbarian. It was just a simple 1 on 1 fighter, with 2 guys with swords. I remember seeing it when was I about 4 years old and being amazed that their heads could be sliced off with a few pixels of blood. Some lizard guy would carry away the body and kick the head like a soccer ball. Mortal Kombat for the '80s?
  5. This is awesome! Put me down for one!! Thanks for making some more of these, I really appreciate it.
  6. PLEASE make some more of these! My life is incomplete without one.
  7. To me, homebrew releases offer the ability to see the system "as it could've been". Sort of like pulling something from an alternate dimension where things played out a little differently. To that end, I value and cherish all the ports of games that never existed on the system, particularly ones that never got a North American console release. Obscure arcade games and MSX ports are the things I love to see homebrew releases of.
  8. My rarest is probably a loose Sammy Lightfoot cart. I might be the only person I know who likes it. When I was a kid, my friend and I used to play it a lot and giggle when Sammy Lightfoot's hair spun around.
  9. This is an awesome discovery! I've always had secret hopes of finding something like this hidden away in a box somewhere. It truly is like finding treasure! Now that the address of Men-A-Vision is known, it's entirely possible that we could track down the creators if they're still alive. It'd be interesting to get their thoughts on it.
  10. My wife is a native German, but high voltage got it right. Solingen is a town in western Germany that's famous for its swords and bladesmiths.
  11. As if all these photos aren't convincing enough, let me say that these CMVS machines are AMAZING! They're the instant crown jewel of any retro game setup. By the way Chris, are there any wood oils you recommend for keeping these things shiny and bright?
  12. I put in my votes. These are the features I'd be looking for: • Excellent video output. We're talking component, RGB scart, or possibly HDMI. Composite isn't enough. • Compatibility with all Colecovision and Super Game Module games • Reliable new controllers • Styling that looks like it could've been from the '80s
  13. Pretty cool! I'm still kinda new to getting back into Colecovision, so I've never bought any homebrew games before. But I think I'd like to start! These games look like a lot of fun.
  14. Is there a chance that you're plugging the composite video jack into a component (red, green, blue) connection port on your TV? If you do that, you'll get a very sharp, but B&W image.
  15. NES: PPU only outputs composite video, making modification upgrades to S-Video or Component impossible without harvesting a PPU from a Nintendo PlayChoice-10 machine. Also prone to blinking errors due to problems syncing with the lockout chip. Turbo Duo: Capacitors commonly need to be replaced to fix bad audio problems. Neo Geo: Like the Genesis, the AV port in the back outputs only monaural sound. Colecovision: Standard controllers often need repair.
  16. eBay is always there for you. A lot of people don't trust that site, but as long as you're careful to always buy from sellers with actual photos of their items (no stock photos!), you'll be fine. Buy a new 72-pin connector for it and you're good to go.
  17. I put in my pre-order finally. Considering what you're getting in the set, I think it's a pretty good deal. The game selection is pretty decent too, about half of them are games I'd play frequently. Obviously they can't release a handheld with every Neo Geo game ever made due to licensing issues, but hopefully the SD card slot will allow for non-SNK games like Magical Drop 3 and such. It's weird, the game that sent me over the edge to buy it was Puzzled. It's an obscure Tetris spinoff that no one gives any love to, but it's super addictive and fast paced.
  18. How retro is "retro"? '70s - 2600 '80s - NES (honorable mention to Colecovision) '90s - SNES (honorable mention to Neo Geo) '00s - PS3
  19. I picked up two of these hoping to get a nice functioning Colecovision controller, but even these have functionality issues. One seems to work fine except that the left direction doesn't work. The other controller is even more bizarre: every direction and fire button registers as UP. The keypad seems okay, but press anything else and your character only goes up. Does anyone have any advice for fixing these? There's 2 screws in the back, but something still holds it together after those are removed and I can't seem to open them up. I have a Power Stick for Atari 2600 and it's a nice controller. How could these Colecovision versions be so wacky?
  20. A lot of the static can be eliminated if you use one of those RCA to RF adapters instead of the older style RF antenna converters. Regarding the controllers, yeah, I don't know what the CV designers were thinking. I absolutely love the Colecovision, but it's stock controllers (and even the Super Action Controllers) are just plain hellish to use. Yurkie, do your controller refurbishments include microswitches? I love how clicky and precise they are.
  21. These are great! People think I'm bizarre that all my ringtones are from 8-bit NES games. Well now they're mixed with these CV tunes too. I've always liked the CV rendition of the Frogger theme.
  22. Ah, okay. I guess I just wanted to see if i could use the Atari paddle as a battery-less replacement. I wanted to play some Turbo this weekend and I don't have any batteries lying around to feed my steering wheel.
  23. I had a weird idea. Can you use an Atari driving paddle with Colecovision steering wheel games? It's got a fire button for a possible gas pedal.
  24. Mine is "The Goat" with Buster Keaton. The only reason I have a favorite silent film is because I was exposed to them when I was young (and I was born in '84). I think it's the same way with most kids nowadays. They've all grown up with nostalgia for Nintendo 64 or even Gamecube, so they have no interest in older things that aren't relevant to them. I fully admit that I have a bias against silent movies. I won't ordinarily watch one unless it was recommended by someone. For me, the reason is because I know the limitations of a silent film will limit the story that I can see. For the same reason, I also have a bias against going to see an action movie with a PG-13 or lower rating. I know there's a limit on what can happen and what I can experience. I believe this is a big part of why kids might dismiss pre-NES (or even pre-3D) games.
