I think the bigger "what if?" comes from their game library. Atari talked up the system a lot and hyped a lot of third party suppliers, but it never materialized. The system was perfectly capable of running excellent games, but the developers failed to really innovate in a way that would give the system a real leg up on the competition. If they'd had a controller capable of playing games like Goldeneye and Rogue Squadron, those kinds of games could have provided a solid foundation for success. Instead of a port of Bubsy barely distinguishable from the 16-bit systems, imagine if it had been made more like Mario 64. I'm not tech savvy, but couldn't the Jaguar have theoretically been able to power games of that level of sophistication? With the Jag-Link capability, a Goldeneye-type game could have been the early equivalent of multi-system Halo! If only.

HA! Happens to the best of us! edit: 50 posts!

Don't suppose anybody could convince SNK to license ports of the Neo Geo library to the Jaguar? Dare to dream!

Already on it!

Don't forget Haunted House! An old 2600 favorite of mine!

Neat stuff! Kinda surprising they prominently advertised Fight for Life and White Men Can't Jump, given how atrocious the games were.

Found it! Thanks for the help!

I was gonna say Doom and AvP, while first person shooters, have some element of survival-horror in them, but if you're talking in the vein of Resident Evil or Parasite Eve, then nothing I'm familiar with.

Crud. If anybody sees one reasonably priced, please post a link. Guess I'll have to jump on it when I can.
-
Crud, I hope not.

Uh, is that actually supposed to be over $100? Is there any way to order from the manufacturer still?

Thanks for the heads up! I've been to a couple of those sites, and I already have Elansar and Philia! Is Another World another version of Out of this World? If so, incredible game (and stupid difficult).

Will this speaker work in a Lynx I? I've been operating with no sound since I got it, though my Lynx II works fine.

Doesn't appear to be on PSN any more here. Well crud.

Yeah, Trevor McFur did not grow my appreciation for the system at all.

Hey all, I just showed up out of nowhere about a week ago so I figured I might as well introduce myself. Name's Ben and I've been an avid player of video games for over thirty years, though only a real collector about the last ten. I picked up a CIB Jaguar on eBay about three or four years ago with a dozen games, and only recently acquired the Jaguar CD CIB. I currently have over 40 games total, and am rounding out my collection while searching for good homebrews. My initial experience with the Jaguar was reading about it in Electronic Gaming Monthly back in the early-mid 90s, and seeing a small section of wall space in Babbage's/Electronics Boutique dedicated to it. At the time, I was in high school and didn't have the money to blow on another system; my SNES had more than enough to keep me busy. But I was always intrigued by the power the Jaguar had to offer, and was doubly enamored with an acual Alien vs. Predator game, which to that point was the first attempt of any kind to spin off the comic mini-series. Much as I wanted to have one, none of my friends or kids in the neighborhood had one, and it was largely relegated to the realm of status symbol amongst the gaming crowd in my area. I remember a lot of the unfavorable reviews and retrospectives, and after owning the system and playing the games, I can say some of it was justified, but a lot of the negativity was undeserved. My biggest criticism of the Jaguar is it was double the cost and quadruple the power (supposedly) of the 16-bit systems, but the games did not reflect that enough. I could see an argument for saying there's a 10-20% improvement in graphics and sound over its 16-bit counterparts, but that's not enough for the kind of premium demanded or lend gravitas to the advertisements' boasts. Much as I feel like the Jaguar could have been much better, I've enjoyed several games immensely and look forward to revisiting some of the library for a second look. I've enjoyed jumping into this forum to hear new stories and share different views of the system. I expect to get more active on the 2600 and Lynx boards as well. Look forward to further interaction with everybody here!

Never beaten any Jaguar game. I only got a console of my own about three years ago and never had the time to master a single game. I hope to maybe finish one or two as I play whatever's being reviewed on Shinto's podcast.

Seeing that makes me pine for some other karate games of yore...particularly Karateka and Yi-Ar Kung Fu.

Now I want to print a weekly newsletter and call it The Jag Bag.

Actual Dental Camera Cases for Atari Jaguar
Trooper Galactus replied to NeoGeoNinja's topic in Atari Jaguar
You, sir, win the day. -
I'm looking forward to delving further into the Jaguar homebrew selection. I played Elansar for about an hour and it was okay, but had to give up until I got a memory card (which I now have). I'd be interested to know which homebrews are most worth pursuing, though I'll admit it is somewhat lamentable I have yet to acquire a 3DO CIB.

If you're more into collecting, go with the Jaguar. If you're more into playing the games, start with the 3DO.

Wasn't even aware it was available! I'll have to check that out! ...I'll also have to find my Vita...mumblemumble...

Submitted a fresh Raiden review...completely screwed up my first one. Hope you use it, and love the podcasts I've listened to so far! It's nice you use a balanced set of reviews instead of just praise or trash...it's interesting to hear the differing perspectives.

Don't you mean Blue Lightning struck twice? XD
