Atari ST Internal IDE Interface POLL
PeteDude replied to Atari_Only's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
1) Which ST (i.e. STF, STE,Mega, or STFM) would you be installing the interface in? --right now, a 520STe 2) Do you have TOS 2.06 or would you also need a TOS upgrade? -- I'd need a TOS upgrade 3) Would you install the interface yourself or need someone to install it? Assuming it's easy, I'd install it. I'm seeing here that someone's mentioned soldering. I'm not a fan of that notion. 4) Would you install inside the ST case or external? -- Drives would be external, therefore I'd prefer an external interface as well, aka cartridge if possible. 5) Would you be willing to pay a deposit far a interface? If it required advance ordering, I'd consider it. 6) Where are you located? California 7) How many would you order? One, more if money/feasibility permitted. How is the price of $120 US Dollars shipping included in the USA? -- I'm a cheap so and so, so no. I try to spend $100 or less on just about everything (yeah, that requires creative shopping). 9) Would you need Hard drive software? Yeah, but I could buy that separately if need be. Mini-rant: Given that there's a USB cartridge for 8-bit Ataris, why not a cartridge-based IDE connector for the ST? Let's go one step further. . . it would appear the most universally requested upgrades are IDE, LAN and VGA. Why not build a small box that has those and connects via cartridge port? I'd probably shell out $125+ for that. Or, heck, at least some kind of chassis expander that'd let you throw on generic ISA or PCI cards to do those things (3 slots would be fine, actually great, even if you had to list only certain cards as supported). And yeah, you could also add sound, USB, etc. to the wish lists, but I'd say after the big three (again, IDE/LAN/VGA), you might as well build a whole new ST-clone system board or put emulation on one of those Eyetech PPC motherboards. End of rant. -
Would like to get an original of Return of the Jedi for the Atari ST. The British version with the CD-style case is preferable.

It's above. . . folks pointed out the right people to go to. There's also Atari Workshop in the UK, if you actually want to buy this stuff new in retail packaging. Read around on the board a bit, you'll find all this. Some of the basic FAQ and weblink sites are useful too. One of the things I wanted to accomplish when I set up my STE was to run a multi-tasking OS. Four months later, I still haven't done that. Geneva looks like the most appealing option but I haven't bought the software yet, and the notion of running a timed demo bothers me. There are a lot of choices, but once you've done some reading, the options become more clear. For example, MultiTOS is too old and buggy, and became MagiC anyway, so scratch MultiTOS off my list. MagiC seems happiest on a Falcon or TT030, not to mention their developers don't seem interested in the actual Atari hardware anymore (not to mention less interested in MagiC regardless of platform)-- scratch that. Geneva hasn't been updated in a while, but IIRC, the author lives here in the US and at least still sells the product.

Did you sell this puppy already?

Repeat that sentiment three times. This would have been a good time for me to buy one. Oh well. I put my two pennies in @ eBay.

One of the cool things about the ST was the wide variety of programming languages available. Everything from BASIC to C to Smalltalk. It's a great platform to learn new programming languages on. The only downside: The only object-oriented language I'm aware of on the ST is Modula. I don't think there's even a C++ available yet.
