  1. I don't necessarily try to recreate this for myself, but the smell of my childhood bedroom where I spent most of my time gaming is a big factor in capturing that old feeling. Every so often I'll catch a whiff of that odd and specific combination of smells and it takes me right back. If I managed to experience that while gaming, I might just die of a nostalgia overdose.
  2. About halfway through now, and absolutely loving it. Feels like an improvement on what many (including myself) already consider a masterpiece.
  3. I've had an okay time with Friday the 13th: Puzzle Killer for Android. I believe it's also available on iOS. It's free, too. Cartoony, bloody violence, and the puzzles do get pretty tough later on.
  4. I Am Setsuna (PS4) - Appreciated a classic JRPG experience after all these years, but I found the game kind of a slog in the end. Banjo Kazooie (XB360 - Missed this when it came out the first time around and was surprised how much I enjoyed it. Controls are a little slippery, and we've clearly come a long way in 3D platformers since then, but I was engaged enough to 100% it. Ori and the Blind Forest (XBone) - One of the best Metroidvania experiences I've had in years. Certainly better than any Castlevania in recent memory. I really enjoyed Samus Returns, but Ori just barely edges ahead of that for me. Currently playing Shantae: Half-Genie Hero for PS4. Diggin it.
  5. Probably my best single-hit wild find to date. Just picked these up today on my lunch break.
  6. Well, "worth" is certainly a subjective concept, and collectors of anything should understand that more that most. I run into non-collectors all the time who balk at my tape collection, but when a collector does, it honestly surprises me. So to answer your question, I like the way movies look on tape. There's something warm and tangible about the aesthetic. Anyone who prefers to play retro games on a CRT should understand this feeling. Furthermore, it's about film history, archiving, and preservation. There are tons of movies that came out on VHS that never made it to DVD or beyond. One of my favorite films of all time, TOKYO POP, was only ever available on VHS and LaserDisc. And if you like weird trash like I do, VHS is an endless treasure trove of amazing garbage. There's a great feeling that comes along with rescuing a long-forgotten relic, taking it home, cleaning it up, keeping it safe, and doing your best to ensure whoever gets it next will treat it similarly. If you'd like a crash course in VHS appreciation, allow me to recommend some documentaries: REWIND THIS!, VHS MASSACRE, ADJUST YOUR TRACKING, and CHUCK NORRIS VS. COMMUNISM.
  7. "Please don't divorce me." Every time I walk in with bags full of whatever I'm on at the moment (VHS and old video formats lately).
  8. I never do well with thrift stores, so I was pumped just to pick these up from GW for $4 each.
  9. Was it this one? http://www.sorethumbretrogames.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/s/n/sn_pro_pad.jpg My cousin had a larger SNES controller that I loved using when I visited her house, but it wasn't clear. I seem to recall it feeling longer, not necessarily bulkier. Can't recall if it had turbo switches or not.
  10. Great pick! Along the same lines, I would love an official localization of Sweet Home for the VC. Addendum: CLOCK TOWER!
  11. Super cool idea. Diggin' the penguin one already.
  12. I'm currently in the market for a Hori Mini Pad for N64 after hearing such great things about it, and it got me to thinking, what are the best third party accessories for consoles? Generally, third party accessories get a bad rap, but I seem to remember a few over the years that were preferred to their first party equivalents. The Logitech wireless controller for PS2 comes to mind. What about accessories invented by third party companies that had no first party equivalent? I'm sure there have been some interesting things like that pop up from time to time. What are some great, notably not-so-great, or flat-out weird accessories that you can recall?
  13. My family had a 36" JVC CRT with side-mounted speakers when I was growing up. I managed to take it with me to college and get a few good gaming years out of it before it finally died on me. I'm very happy with my current 27" Sharp flat panel CRT with component inputs, but I'll always remember that JVC fondly.
  14. Same link ... now 40 bucks. Could've sworn I saw a Black Friday deal for 25. Damn thing keeps dropping. Wondering if this is going to be one of those things that is a commercial failure now but in 10 years people will be paying premium prices for it in order to play the handful of good Vita games on their TVs.
  15. Lots of factors killed the PS Vita. Maybe lack of piracy was one of them. I can tell you from personal experience that I was a late adopter of the PSP, and I only bought one to mod it. The biggest issue with the PS Vita was it's weak library, plain and simple.
