Missing chip on Adam Printer Controller Board
Milli V replied to Milli V's topic in ColecoVision / Adam
This is what the part is. I ordered some for .50 each - maybe I can fix the other printers too, they all have an issue with either the printhead motor or the carriage motor The ULN2001, ULN2002, ULN2003 and ULN2004 are high voltage, high current Darlington arrays each containing seven open collector Darlington pairs with common emitters. Each channel rated at 500 mA and can withstand peak currents of 600 mA. Suppression diodes are included for inductive load driving and the inputs are pinned opposite the outputs to simplify board layout. The versions interface to all common logic families: ULN2001 (general purpose, DTL, TTL, PMOS, CMOS); ULN2002 (14 - 25 V PMOS); ULN2003 (5 V TTL, CMOS); ULN2004 (6 - 15 V CMOS, PMOS). These versatile devices are useful for driving a wide range of loads including solenoids, relays DC motors, LED displays filament lamps, thermal printheads and high power buffers. -
I am going through some parts printers and I have one that works with the exception the print wheel just vibrates and never resets- I switched heads and it is not the head but the controller board. Looking at 4 boards I have I see that U3 is just an empty socket on the one I question but the others have a chip soldered in ( ignore the crazy wires on the one - no clue ). I don't know what this chip does but could it be the reason for the problem? Milli

Does anyone know what the 2 unused keys on the Adam keyboard were intended for? They are on the membrane between the space bar and the arrow keys and the holes are there in the keyboard but they do not have any keys . I'm gonna test tomorrow to see what key code it gives but am curious what was the intention. Milli

If your system starts up in smart writer and the encoder wheel is not ruined in the data drive - put the tape in and test it. The way I test unknown systems is : Plug in Turn on Test few keys to see if printer works Switch to word processor and test all keys Put in CPM tape and attempt boot If boot make a copy of file on tape Remove tape Insert cartridge Reset and test Game controller If all passes I disassemble clean and do a lot more testing such as doing, dual tape, video out, channel 3&4 out, memory tests etc

Through the cartridge port? Or replace the smart writer and EOS rom? Or? Milli

Dr. D.’s ADAM/ColecoVision webpages are all gone (for the moment)
Milli V replied to Dr. D.'s topic in ColecoVision / Adam
If you need a host I can host it under Smartbasic.net (have my pages there and also have http://wiki.smartbasic.netthere too ) - I have my own servers - its what I do for a living Milli -
Rare disk drive for the Coleco Adam – works but needs repair to be fully functional. See Details. Also includes manuals, power supply, cable and 3 diskettes, EOS Disk Manager, CP/M 2.2 and Backup 3.0 http://retrosystemrescue.com/product/coleco-adam-disk-drive/

One of my customers has an Adam with 2 data drives and he just discovered that if you try to boot up buck rogers in drive 2 it will never load - it just rewinds to the end and stops - I tested it and same behavior on mine - is there a reason for this? And before you ask - the drives are fine and the tapes are good if in drive 1 . These are 2 different systems and 2 different tapes (2 different continents too ) Milli

The link for Adam Downloads in the Virtual Adam text is not working - it is pointing at downloads.html and not at the download directory

ColecoVision / ADAM troubleshooting ?
Milli V replied to retroillucid's topic in ColecoVision / Adam
It's a shame - I asked for and received advice - still do - because of this I have gone from a single system my fiancé got me last year for my birthday to restoring and selling them. I have 10 Adams in my house and have sold over a dozen this year. What I learn I freely pass on - I chat with people all them time ( on Facebook mostly ) and help if possible . Ignoring someone really doesn't help this community - it hurts - as for the pinned posts - some of them are just too long to try and find information in. Don't make the mistake many of the other retro groups have done and scare off the noobs- else one day it will just be a bunch of old farts wondering where everyone went Milli -
Hi Guys - going to throw this out here and see if there is interest and if so how much. Have a disk drive I got about 2 months ago - when I got it it worked for about 5 minutes but now it does everything but read a disk - ie goes through the motions of formatting, spins up, head seeks, steps when formating etc. I did some swapping of components with another drive and odds are it is on the drive board, not on the Adam controller board - when I move the mechanism to a different controller board the problem follows it and the original controller board has no problem handling the mech from another drive. So the question is - anyone interested in buying it? I can throw in some disks so when / if you get it working you will be ready to go. I have the feeling a capacitor or something failed on the drive itself but I am a programmer, not an electrician so I would probably do more damage trying to fix it then if I just left it alone. I only come on here once a day or so - so if you want to get a hold of me quicker you would be better off doing so on Facebook in the Coleco Adam page. Milli

Anyone have a clue why this happens: Have a DDP that reads tapes just fine - but after reading them they are unreadable - if I reformat and put stuff back on the tape(on a different drive) they work just fine - no damage to the tape - Is it a magnetized head? Milli

I have a ton of stuff for the adam - most of it not listed on my store (http://retrosystemrescue.com/) yet if you cant find what you are looking for.
-
We have been talking on FB of a potential "micro-con" this fall in the Northeast - sort of a get ball rolling and build enthusiasm for the Adam instead of waiting another year
-
Albany NY would be awesome - it is only 20miles away - I could do a session or 2

How many people go? What goes on there (itinerary?)?

Another beautiful system ready to leave home - maybe to your home? http://www.ebay.com/itm/222197587960?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

Hi Guys - We now have over 300 disks / tapes you can choose from in our store: http://retrosystemrescue.com/product-catego…/…/disk-library/

Last 2 years we did Massachusetts, Vermont, NY and New Hampshire - from the HUdson valley to Washington Mountain and White face - this year we are going to Gettysburg PA. Bike about 70 miles a day and camp at night

Swaping roms with resistors didnt help - without resistors and nothing booted. It is getting power to the keyboard and to the CV so I'll see if I can find a bad spot on the board next.
-
Edge connector is good - reseated the roms no change - same power supply I use on all my adams - gonna swap out the roms with anotherset and see - these have the restistor pack under 2 of them - will i need them for the other roms or are they just needed for this set (ie are they there for the roms or because the board had issues?)
