  1. Hm, that's an idea, although the more colors I use on the hero, the fewer I have left to use on the actual map. I guess so long as I try to limit myself to 2 palettes worth of colors on the hero it'll still keep some colors available for other things. I'll tinker with it while I continue to draw up random sprites and tiles tonight.

  2. About your formating problem, I don't know if your 486 support a 1.44 meg or a 720k. Or are you trying to format a 720k disk on a 1.44 meg driver?

My big guess your disks you want to format are broken. I mean, too many errors and the disks are useless.

I suggest to find an old CD-rom burner who can work on 486s.

The comp sports a 1.44 meg drive. The disk I tested it with was pre-formatted so next time I turn the comp on I'm going to try to manually format it and try again. Most of the progs on there probably aren't worth yanking out since they aren't the main ones I use to work on growing up. Those, if I still have them, are locked away on a 5.25" diskette it seems. Didn't find them on my CD archive unfortunately. (Did find other things that were definitely transferred from the original 3.5" diskettes - including some pc programming that never really got anywhere. :D)

I suppose I could try to install the ancient harddrive from my old, and now garbaged 386. Not entirely sure if it's worth all the trouble however as I don't think there's much if any possibility for the .bas progs to be on it.

  3. Qbasic eh. Did you write qbasic programs or did you download qbasic programs and use them?

I like downloading Qbasic games and play them. Some games are great.

Most of my qbasic experience was pre-internet days. I wrote a lot of programs/games although I probably only ever actually -finished- one of them. Which could have seriously been done better. :D

Most of the qbasic programs stuck on the 486 however were written by my cousin it seems, meaning mine are stuck somewhere on in my backups archives and/or on a couple 5.25" disks which are probably corrupted after a decade+ of non-use. I should really try to dig them out.

(I found 3.5" disks afterwards, although I may have to play around with formatting. The old computer likes it just fine, but the current comp complains about formatting.)

  4. Not enough to modify the post, so I'll just leave this in a comment. For the people who complain that companies like Game Stop are ripping off the game companies by selling their games secondhand for 5 dollars cheaper than a new copy and trying to equate that somehow as being as bad as copyright infringement, stop kidding yourself.

The people ripping themselves off in that case are the customers actually stupid enough to buy a secondhand game due to a 5 dollar discount. Game Stop would never be doing this if people weren't that desperate for any kind of discount at all. Just don't buy it and let them run themselves into the ground.

  5. (SuperCat note--accidentally hit edit)

Another issue with the differences between health care and cost-sharing restaurants is that at a restaurant you'll probably opt to eat better just because you can.

(SuperCat paraphrase)People aren't likely to get a kidney transplant just because everybody else is getting one. They'll get it because they need it.

  6. Looking at it, I'm thinking that the PSP Go should be considered a new portable system rather than a new PSP model - simply because it lacks the UMD drive and therefore the ability to play PSP games. Instead, it will be able to download PSP Go games (which the PSP can also play, unless they are too big to fit in the PSP). Some PSP games may be re-released as PSP Go games. (Note: a UMD can hold 1.8GB max, so storage isn't a limitation.)

If that were the case however, I would argue that Sony should be marketing it as a new portable rather than trying to call it an "upgrade".

Eliminating the GBA slot (and the GBA compatibility mode) reduced cost so the new features could be added without significantly increasing the pricetag.

I believe a few DS games made use of the GBA slot however. As a result if you had those games, they aren't moving to the DSi with you.

... and I just read that Sony is planning on offering PS2 titles (with an emulator) via the Playstation Store.

So instead of getting to use the games by default, you get the honor of paying for a brand new copy!

    1. No manufacturing & distribution costs (and no limitted production runs)
    2. No retailer costs (unless they want to put an empty box on the shelf)
    3. Unlimitted "shelf life" - just try to find last year's sleeper hit in a store
    4. No secondary market (used games)

To which in return the gamers receive:

    1. Nothing physical to actually collect, for those who enjoy that. (Like myself)
    2. Full price on games forever. Maybe a sale here and there on downloads... maybe. But expect the same price as a physical copy or more as we already see happening.
    3. Limited lifetime. It'll only be offered as long as they want to offer it. At any time it can all go poof!
    4. You no longer own what you're purchasing. If it sucks, you no longer have the ability to re-sell it.

I -really- hate the attack on the used market in particular, and that's basically what it is. And I can't wait for 10 years from now when Sony and Microsoft and Nintendo are no longer offering to restore games bought for your PS3 or Xbox 360 or Wii for when the consoles fail on you. But instead offer you discounts so you can rebuy them ALL over again on the spiffy new console offerings - if they bothered to keep it available. This is especially true with the 360's and their failure rates. Microsoft's little exchange warranty isn't going to be around forever and I'm going to be sitting there with popcorn laughing my ass off when I see people bitch about it. ;)

Mind you, I understand what you're saying about why things are being done. I just don't agree that they should be doing these things. Let's consider another aspect of the new generation. With standard harddrives for the most part, it's starting to become expected or acceptable to ship unfinished/buggy games with the intent to patch them later on. I expect that from PC vendors, and it (along with their use of DRM) is the big reason I don't bother with major PC games. I liked console games because for the most part you could put them in the console, turn the power on and VOILA! the game just -worked-. Properly.

One of the latest Xbox 360 games, a racing game iirc, that got released is apparently riddled with bugs. To the point where the 360 version tries to connect to THE PLAYSTATION STORE! Awesome! Don't worry guys, we'll fix it if you'll connect your console to the internet! At least for now. God help you if you buy a second hand copy of it 10 years from now or just get a replacement 360 10 years from now and want to continue playing the game on that console! ;)

    But I rant. :ponder:

    I blame the pizza.

  7. I had all four of them pulled at once. Didn't eat anything for days except Ensure. Even then, I had to wash my mouth out with salt water. And then they had to make me have sutures, and then go back and take them out. It was a pain, but I guess it had to be done, otherwise, what's the point?

I had 3 of mine taken out in highschool many many years ago. First time had 2 taken out, then I had one. This last one wasn't ready to be taken out (still far under the gums) at the time so it was left in with plans of having it taken out later in the year. Then plans for that fell through for over a decade. :ponder:

I'll be rinsing with salt water when I start eating again, although right now all I've had is juice and water for the last 40hrs! Still not too hungry so trying to hold out a bit longer for the swelling to continue going down. I have pudding to start in on when I'm ready for it. And some yogurt. When I start in on those I'll have to rinse.

I have stitches in my mouth as well, but I'm not going to need to go get those removed. They'll dissolve on their own over the next couple of weeks or something.

In my case, the specialist told me usually if a man reaches his 40's (I'm not in my 40's yet tho!) without the wisdom teeth causing problems, then he recommends leaving them in. I'm only in my mid-30's and while it can be uncomfortable having the tooth in, the only time it caused problems was if the gums swelled up. He told me, based on the xray images, that I had probably a 1% chance of not having problems with that tooth in the next 10 years. So given his opinion of the situation and my own intuition of how that tooth will likely cause problems and discomfort, I decided to go ahead and get it removed asap while I'm younger and more likely to bounce back from the ordeal quickly. :)

At least it's done and over with, and hopefully I don't have any more problems of this nature in the future. I do have some cavities that need fixing up, but compared to this, those should be fairly easy to deal with... hopefully next year so I can boost my medical coverage to actually cover them.

  8. The only Civ I've played and enjoyed (Even tho I seriously sucked at it most of the time!!) was Civ II. Bought Civ II Gold edition years ago and use to play it a lot n my old comp. ... I have no idea if it'll work on XP... hm. Perhaps I should install it.

Might take a look at Revolution on the DS in the future, but that'll be on hold until christmas or so. :ponder:

  9. Phatasy Star does indeed use a battery, IIRC

BTW: You best make a quick savegame and wait a week to see if it's still there. I remember playing Golden Axe Warrior for three days in a row without problems, but then I paused a week and the save game was gone.

I looked at the cartridge earlier today already and noticed, despite the game not having been played in at least half a year or more (how long I've owned it) the previous owner still seems to have had a save game active.

I need to track down a copy of Golden Axe Warrior myself.

  10. You could check out Creative Commons licensing.

Yeah, I've stuck CC-BY-SA-3.0 on my alpha code, but the GNU folks say it's incompatible with the GPL. I think there are some philosophical differences because I haven't found anything which says "CC-BY-SA" is bad because of X. (I think the issue is GNU likes to encourage source delivery and discourage "advertising" clauses like CC-BY.)

My grasp on the full GPL isn't that great, but that's my opinion as well. With how often a GPLed project may change hands or get forked, you can imagine how large the "credits" list could end up if everybody fixing a bug insisted on adding their name to it. That being said, it'd be funny as hell seeing a 7gig torrent for a GPL project where the installed program only takes up 100megs, with the rest of it being a "credits.txt".

Of course, when it comes to software, I'm half caught between applying creative commons or just sticking a very simple EULA in there that is fairly unintrusive and non-deceptive (you know, the exact opposite of 99.9999% of all EULAs)

The EULA I'd use would be something similar to "By accepting this EULA, you acknowledge you are using it at your own risk. If you break it, you get to keep both pieces." ... which I've actually seen in one EULA before.

  11. You could check out Creative Commons licensing. There are versions of the copyleft licensing that do pretty much exactly what you're looking for. For instance this version is Attribution, non-commercial. Which basically requires them give you credit while allowing it for derivative works so long as it's non-commercial in nature. (There's a version that allows commercial use as well.)

I tend to see this type of license applied to things like books and music by authors releasing things independantly (As if they had a publisher odds are the publisher would never agree to let it be released with anything but full-on copyright granted to the publisher.)

As to how useful it would be applied to software, I'm unsure, but the licensing itself isn't tied to a specific use or field of work. Most I can say is read up on the website to see if it fits the bill for you. Keep in mind that releasing something in a non-commercial CC license doesn't forbid the original author from selling the material. It just forbids others from selling it or derivatives.

  12. What do you mean by referrals?

Is there another comic-hosting site that I could move it to?

I meant referrers. Half asleep when I was typing this morning. ;) Based on the "help" page for broken images with keenspace sites, that's the most likely cause. I know I had trouble downloading music from a couple of band websites that also for some reason required referrers for downloads.

As for alternatives, I dunno. I just host my comic on my own website and do the updating manually which would be a pain in the butt back in 2000-2001 with all the html editing. I'm planning on using php to help with that before I restart mine so that all I'll have to do is update the comic and perhaps a txt file associated with it. ;) If I find one while surfing around the web, I'll let you know.

  13. Probably the main reason I don't keep up on it is due to the choice of hoster you have. comicgenesis is one of those sites that require visitors to leave referrals and crap or you get blank images. While they argue it's needed for their anti-hotlinking system I doubt it's truly needed if they'd implement their anti-hotlinking in better ways. In the end I can't be assed around to making exceptions over it etc...

But more to the reason for me replying, if you're going to try to increase the speed you're releasing your comic, I recommend you get yourself a healthy backlog of comics made beforehand. This is the case, no matter what speed you release at, be it 1/day or 1/month -- you just need more for the 1/day rate ;)

I'll eventually be relaunching my crappy comic that I did back in 2000-2001 this way eventually, but I'm still working on my website's redesign. ;)

  14. I am truly sorry that Ubuntu did not work for you, it is really a great OS. But if your still interested in trying Linux I found a site that has plenty of Live CDs to try.

    http://www.livecdlist.com/

It shows how often I keep tabs on my own blog I guess - just saw this now. ;)

Thanks, I'll check into it when I have more time next weekend. ;)

  15. Great Idea about the second computer, it will get you use to the OS. But remember Linux has some advantages over Windows namely in that they are trojan and virus free. And there is no such thing as Linux spyware.

The top reason why I've finally started making the jump. :)

  16. I played around with Ubuntu Linux myself for more than year. It has not been easy as Linux does have it's limitations namely drivers. But it has been interesting and if you or anyone else wants to know what problems I faced and how did I workaround them. Please feel free to message me.

And by the way I am still going to continue to use Linux on my second computer.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind after the initial dust settles and I start to realize things that I no longer have use of (such as printers, usb dvd burners, etc)

Although I tend to not use either of those two particular things very much these days, so we'll see how things go. :) I'll probably focus on one thing at a time as time permits to get it up and running again.

When I get more money I may buy a second second-hand computer to put in the room. On that one I'll likely keep XP if possible, and use it for the extra hardware and software that I just can't get working under Linux. That comp will likely remain offline tho.

  17. If I had been around and active when the CC2's were first released I'd likely would have snapped one up, but the price and rarity of them these days make it unlikely that I'll ever have one so it'll be emulation for me. That's going to be a problem if/when I actually start trying to homebrew the 7800 but oh well, so long as there's something to use.

  18. Now, for the Berserker Armor, I can PM the use for it if you want (so not to spoil it for others), or post here if you want.

Entirely up to you whichever way you do it. I would have otherwise just tried getting through it with "Just don't let the damned things touch me." approach if at all possible. Although I suspect it'd be a lot harder to do that on hard mode if they increase the difficulty radically the way they do in Lament of Innocence. The only claim to glory I can probably claim for this run through was that Jonathan used the Vampire Killer for the entire game, including unlocking the whip's power. Granted, used Charlotte and Jonathan equally but with the use of a few mastered subweapons Jonathan was still able to take out several bosses on his own. :)

I might not attempt hard mode til some time after christmas however. I'm already considering playing through the ps2 castlevanias again.

  19. You realize that chinese investors started bailing out of this early on as soon as they realized what was going on right? ;)

Can't bame them for that, right? :(

To keep them staying, provide them a stable, steadily growing economy.

I agree. Hopefully the americans will do that for us Canadians as well. Unfortunately our economies are too closely tied that we can't just bail as easily as other countries. ;)

However as it's been pointed out, there's been nothing done to try to keep this from happening again, or to make the people who caused it pay for what they've done.

  20. Seriously: The more financal interests are spread and mixed worldwide, the lower the chance for a major war which would automatically ruin the attackers assets too. So as long as China is investing into US economy, you are pretty safe from them. :(

You realize that chinese investors started bailing out of this early on as soon as they realized what was going on right? ;)

That's part of what got this rock rolling now rather than in a year or two.

  21. Wonderboy was developed by "Escape". Escape later wanted to do a port for the game on the famicon/NES with Hudson Soft but Sega owned the "Wonder Boy" trademark they had to do some changing around. Escape had later renamed themselves to Westone.

So the reason why it's "basically Adventure Island" is because they're one in the same. ;)
