Well, I'll take a look at the series after christmas to see how it looks by then. Can't say I'm expecting to be praising it up given I've been overall disappointed by the last few games in the series.
-
Was considering Soul Calibur VI but feels like it's going to be a DLC train to be honest. I'll re-evaluate what I feel about the game after christmas as by then they'll probably have all the DLC at least announced properly. Even the season pass has virtually no data about what your 39.99(cdn) dollars is paying for beyond 3 unknown characters (unless the one announced and currently available - a character that use to be a main selectable character in previous games is one of those 3) and 2 batches of unannounced creation parts for the Create A Warrior mode. From what I've gathered the available parts from the start in that mode is low. Which is different compared to how the kotaku reviewer seemed to talk about it so I'm wondering if he was given access to all the DLC for his review given how he was gushing about how much content there was. And if that's the case it probably hints that all the DLC they got planned was probably completed well before launch of the game. That's probably just me being a bit cynical of course given that I see that happen all the time, particularly with time delayed launches of japanese games overseas.

Sony: "new hardware is needed," Microsoft: "Project XCloud"
Mord replied to Flojomojo's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Really? Often times when I put a game in for the first time I have to sit around while it installs from the media to the harddrive, downloads additional parts (primarily the multiplayer I'm led to believe) from psn, then download the patches which for some games can be in the gigabytes. Then I can sit down and enjoy a gimped game that has had anywhere from 20-500 dollars of content ripped out to sell separately as DLC while I sit and hope the game doesn't randomly crash because the game ends up having bugs in it that aren't yet patched yet. That's of course assuming I can instantly get to the part where I put the disc in the console and can play it without the system stopping me cold and insisting I download a meaty firmware patch with very few to no notes on what it actually does - doesn't matter since it'll insist I install it. If you haven't seen the changes happening to consoles over the last couple of generations I'm afraid you're the one living inside your head. -
Sony: "new hardware is needed," Microsoft: "Project XCloud"

Actually the "traditional" console experience went away a generation ago. Now we're all playing on low end locked up PCs giving us the worse of both worlds. -
A -cheaper- upgrade? Have you been paying attention to Nintendo's history of updating their portable line? Any time they make the existing hardware better, it assumes the existing price point. The current model, by contrast may go down for a short period until the last of the units are gone. Only time a refresh was cheaper was when they axed functionality out of the existing models - such as that 100 dollar mini-wii from a while back. Or the creation of the 2DS line. So yeah, I'm not holding my breath for any new model to be cheaper AND be an actual upgrade. I do expect them to try to keep the price constant with what's currently available however, banking on the price of components having gone down some.

I think the main issue with using a 3d printed case is that it'll be weaker than a standard cartridge shell. Probably not the best option for final products. Regarding errors, I agree that sometimes it can be a pain to find the actual problem. Best advice is to just remember what caused the error once you finally fix it. That way when you see that particular error again you have a better idea of where to start. With the unresolved symbols list error Rev points out above, most of the symbols will likely be 7800basic defined variables. So keep a close eye on anything you defined yourself. Also make sure you don't try to define anything already defined by 7800basic accidentally. (temp1 for instance I believe.) OH, also when looking for reported bugs it's often a good idea to look before the line numbers 7800basic will throw at you. Sometimes the actual bug happens up above that, and the line 7800basic is screaming about is just the line where it finally said "THAT'S IT! I QUIT!" Half of these types of errors, for me, is just as much about something I didn't type as it is something I did type.

Frame counters might be a bit more complicated to handle manually. Doing fixed point variables lets the math keep track of the frame counting for you.

Firmware update 6.0.0 and online service now active
Mord replied to eightbit's topic in Nintendo Switch
Well, almost exactly what they said when you factor in the almost 100% price increase over the original price tag they announced. Plus you're going to be hit and miss for cloud saves as not every switch game will be able to use it. As for me, if I end up getting it, it'll probably depend entirely on the types and frequency of discounts in the store you can get. I wouldn't mind putting down 35 dollars for a year if I could very quickly recover the cost from game savings. (a mere 10% off or something ain't going to make me run and jump on board mind you. If I have to spend 350 bucks to get that 35 recovered, it ain't going to be worth it.) -
Sega Genesis Classics Announced (PS4/XB1/PC; May 29th)
Mord replied to Atariboy's topic in Modern Console Discussion
They'd need to have different games to do that. Wouldn't be surprised if any other game they released back in the day had license restrictions that have long since expired. -
For 7800Basic, also keep randomterrain's 7800basic website bookmarked for quick access. Very useful for looking up information on 7800Basic quickly. Between that and the release thread above you should be well supplied with help!

Which Game is The Worst DLC Offender?
Mord replied to Classic Pac's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Depends on what you call worse. On cost alone, yes there are games that charge more to get the full game experience. Dead or Alive 5 has well over 500 dollars of alternate costumes. Pretty sure that's assuming you buy the "cheaper" bundles as well. There was another game I bought on the ps4 that had weekly bundles of DLC. Costing 50-75 dollars per bundle - usually in the higher range. The base game cost full price and appears to have very little content - Senran Kagura Peach Beach Splash. (Figgered I'd get a splatoonish game on the ps4, especially since it had some physical extras. Looking over the bonuses though and the fact that most of the content appears to be in the DLC, I can safely say the purchase disappointed me.) I also remember a golf game that had close to or more than 300 dollars in DLC to purchase all the golf courses. And iirc there is or use to be some sort of train simulator game that had probably thousands of dollars of dlc for it at one point. I checked on steam to see if I could find it but the only one on there right now that might be the same game sits at about 200 dollars of DLC. If it's the same game then they dropped the price tags over the years - but considering it still has 200 dollars of DLC for a game released in 2011... Uh. tl;dr version: yeah, there's worse out there. But that doesn't make that pinball game any better. -
I almost bought it a while back, until I noticed they managed to add DLC to tetris. Simple game mode variations. So I spent my money on something else.

In my case this is why I've stuck with DVDs unless there was a blu-ray/DVD combo. I simply refuse to connect my stand-alone bluray player to the internet to make sure it can do firmware updates - especially with the very real possibility of it getting more than what it was looking for (given there are IoT malware floating around, and it's common knowledge to anyone who's at least looked into it that the firmware of such devices are WAY too exploitable and they aren't exactly running any kind of antivirus.) This way, I have high definition "by default" but if the company has done something to force an update of the firmware and fails to run because of it, I have a dvd copy - and they get to go on my boycott list. I have a very small collection of bluray-only discs. I got most of them when HMV was going out of business a couple years back so that kind of told me what I felt a blu-ray-only movie/tv show etc was worth to me. Roughly about 3 bucks or less. Any higher than that and I find it unbelievably easy to put the disc back on the shelf and not look back.

And people scoffed when Nintendo said they expected households to likely get multiple switches.

Xbox All Access: The Future of Gaming?
Mord replied to Skippy B. Coyote's topic in Modern Console Discussion
The short answer is I have just as much intention of getting a xbone now as I did before their announcement. Meaning it still sits firmly at 0. If they pay -me- 22-35 bucks a month for two years, maybe I'll take one off their hands and let it sit in a closet somewhere. Of course, this is just my opinion based on the fact I have no interest in Microsoft's xbox line. If Nintendo or Sony did this, I'd likely consider it - except I already have both. *addition* Also, as you say if Microsoft does release their next console in the next year, this might bite them in the ass. The people paying 22-35/month for an aging xbone at the time of release of the next console will simply be even less able to purchase a brand new launch console up front compared to those who don't dabble in this program. Meaning a possibility of even fewer preorders or early 1-2 year adopters. That is of course unless they do the same thing at similar price points for their next console. (I don't think they'll get many people ponying up for a new console at 50/month for 2 years for instance.) -
At the very least you'll probably need to make sure it doesn't require embedding. As of 1.0.3, which I have, while technically a checkmark still exists when creating a new tileset file it's been grayed out. I've yet to figure out if there's a way to actually enable it but their manual pages indicate it's not enabled by default because apparently that's more useful. (not having to recompile tilesets for different maps, etc.)
-
As a possible easy way to add compatibility for the above difference, when it sees one of those types of lines in the code segment above it could treat that as a "include" statement for the associated tsx file. The contents of the tsx files appear to be identical to what use to be added in those locations by default. Might be worth testing out.

I was fiddling around with plotmapfiles this week and getting the same issue with the "*** (64): ERROR, plotmapfile didn't find a palette for palette0". Was using version 1.0.3. Didn't do any embeddling and noticed the top portion of the .tmx file was indeed different. <tileset firstgid="1" source="../gfx/rpgtiles5.tsx"/> <tileset firstgid="22" source="../gfx/rpgtiles1.tsx"/> <tileset firstgid="27" source="../gfx/rpgtiles2.tsx"/> ... instead of the contents of the .tsx files being included in the .tmx file directly. Additionally, I'm not entirely sure how to enable embedding for the tsx files as in my version it seems to be greyed out. In version 0.15, I saw this in the tmx format changelog: "The pure XML and Gzip-compressed tile layer data formats were deprecated, since they didn’t have any advantage over other formats. Remaining formats are CSV, base64 and Zlib-compressed layer data." That's a separate issue perhaps - the default format for saving is CSV now. While you can change it back to XML for now, that might be something to keep an eye on as new versions get released.

Totally random (and cool) Shantae Blaster Master update!
Mord replied to eightbit's topic in Nintendo Switch
I haven't even unsealed my boxed copy yet. (Haven't had much energy for a lot of gaming this summer due to the heat.) Looks like when I finally get around to it there will be much updating to expect. Haven't plugged my switch into the dock this year since it looks like I have one of those non-charging L-controllers. :/ -
Haven't been playing anything this summer on any of the modern consoles. Wait too hot in the apartment making me worry about the systems melting. Got about 5-7 new games to start in on when everything cools down in the fall. Until then I'll probably just keep playing the genesis on the cooler nights.

Came close to buying a turbografx 16 for $150 (cdn). Sadly someone else got to it first while I waited for payday.
-
They're really that expensive now? I remember Toys R Us flushing them out of stock for fifty bucks.
-
Is a TG-16 more desirable than any PC Engine? I bought two basic white models last year and didn't spend more than $35-40 US each + shipping from Japan.
Or was that a TG-16 bundle with games, multitap, kit and caboodle?
-
I Totally recommend a Turbografx or PC Engine...With an adapter you can play games for either (and of course there's an Everdrive available) and Turbo CD or PC Engine Duo-Rs etc., are region free for CD games...Just save up and wait for a deal

Beat Hazard Ultra technically lets you play any music you want. Of course, it actually uses the music to determine the level you're playing.

The main reason one of the GCC guys gave for that in an audio presentation/narrative at one event was because with the addition of a TIA on the motherboard there wasn't really enough room to add an actual pokey. Whether that's true or they simply saw more profit in making a unique sound chip to sell to Atari in bulk we'll never know. The link to the audio in question can be found with the search function on this site.
