  1. That Street Fighters Miniatures game on kickstarter closes around midnight tonight. Lots of stuff unlocked in the stretch goals as well! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1821440755/street-fighter-the-miniatures-game

  2. As for the article, that was a developer telling people essentially that they want single player games to die, mentioning EA in their argument for why they're not the only ones that think that way. If those developers had their way I'm sure single players would have died right on schedule simply because there wouldn't be any new single player games being made. But at that point they would have realized they're going broke simply because all the remaining players that didn't quit modern gaming to play their single player backlogs were off playing some other game they didn't make all because it was slightly flashier than their own turd.
  3. To be fair, in many cases that's because they're not telling anyone, fans or not, WHAT the Ataribox actually is.
  4. No kidding. You can imagine a person's let down when they realize the Brassica Volumine their character used to recover health was a cabbage roll.
  5. And in this case, it probably means you're not getting all that much out of your Vita anyway given that the vast majority of titles on the system are digital only. I'm resistant to getting digital only myself on these systems, but I'll buy up things on sale so long as it's pretty cheap and I still have room to comfortably load it on the system. When you get into a flash sale and you're able to pick up a bunch of older titles you either liked on the PS1, or PSP and would like to pick it up again for (in some cases literally) a dollar, I'm down with that. I do try to get physical copies where possible still, although I do have a few games on the Vita that I own both digitally and physically. The physical copy so I know I'll have it around if I ever need to get a new Vita after Sony axes off total support for it, but the digital copy I picked up for cheap in a flash sale for convenience. Anyone getting into digital downloads on locked down consoles should at least understand that eventually you're not going to be able to redownload the things anymore eventually. (And I'm sure there are some people still today that believe that will never happen on some consoles.) I know I do, and that's why I buy things at prices that reflect that reality. And incidentally that's why I'm buying extremely little on the PS4 digitally this generation - as even with flash sales, the prices are WAY above anything I'd be tempted to consider. Also, when it comes to the Vita in particular, there's not going to be any "rebuying all these games" to worry about since they just aren't available on physical media in many cases.
  6. By contrast to this, consider the Switch. Nintendo's pushing digital a lot as well for it, but at the very least they let the Switch use standard micro-sds, which are a lot cheaper by the GB. I picked up a 128gb card for the Switch because like the Vita I ain't going to be screwing around with swapping the card out. But thanks to the relatively much cheaper storage, Nintendo can probably expect to see me buy from them throughout the life of the console without me running too much of a risk of running out of space. I'm willing to bet the expensive and hard to find storage for the Vita is probably why it wasn't selling even when Sony was pushing it. And the prices on those cards never did go down - if anything they went up.
  7. Sorry, can't agree with you there given that the 3DS was selling like hotcakes during the same period. Sony's ads sucked. Sony overpricing the memory cards sucked HARD. Sony then pushing the digital a LOT harder than the physical made that HARDER. Sony CAN market electronics. The PS1 and PS2 show that. The fact that the PS3 was able to finally catch on despite their original plans even shows that. (As for the PS4 beating the Xbone 2-to-1, I'm more willing to say Microsoft's actions helped accomplish that more than Sony's actions ) So with all that success, the fact that they couldn't make the Vita sell better shows they weren't trying. The only reason I picked up my Vita was because I actually won a little bit of money which helped me purchase a memory card. So I got a memory card "Free". But I'm still pissed to this day that the largest memory card I could find in stores anywhere, even back then, was 16GB for 40-50 bucks. Plus tax. Now that that 16GBs are filled up, guess what I don't buy from Sony anymore? Digital. Because 1. I can't find any vita memory cards to add, even if I wanted to (I don't buy online much), and I'm not too interested in swapping out memory cards to find out which game is on which, assuming the Vita even allows you to do that. (I'm kinda sure it does, but regardless, I'm not interested in doing so with those microscopic cards that are easy to lose.)
  8. What are you talking about, it has a good chunk of the psp's library. In addition to it's own, the PS1, and various digital minis that worked on it, the psp, and the ps3. The system, ultimately, was fine. Sony just refused to properly market it.
  9. Now the fun task of changing emails on online services like atari age because lycos decided to axe all their free email accounts. Fun times. (Atari Age account already updated!)

Lycos? That is a provider I haven't heard about in the past 15 years. Good luck changing your login details everywhere you need to.

I didn't know Lycos was doing that. i guess Angelfire & Tripod are next. ;(

  10. Well, it's not like Nintendo has a copyright on top-down-screen-scrolling games at any rate. So long as people aren't ripping off nintendo assets (graphics, music), not using nintendo trademarks and the like, then there's nothing that Nintendo should be able to do to them. Most of the projects that get shut down do exactly that.
  11. Started in on Ni no Kuni 2 finally. last weekend. Haven't had much time to play it during the week however.
  12. I probably wouldn't mind this for my switch, even if it's just a couple of the games I'd like to have (primarily Phantasy Star - so I don't have to hook up the genesis+powerbase to play it). If Sega's selling these as a bundle, that's fine I'd probably get the bundle for the few games I'll particularly want, but if they sell them individually they'll see far less cash out of me.
  13. Tempted to put a pledge down for the Street Fighters Miniatures Game on kickstarter. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1821440755/street-fighter-the-miniatures-game

I've got til the end of the month to decide myself (When tax refunds should materialize.) The kickstarter ends may 5th so should be plenty of time to learn how kickstarter even works. XD

I -was- going to go full in, but right now thinking I'll d othe middle-pledge and only get the SF Alpha character addons.

I can already see some people getting two sets of the game to resell the miniatures from their second set on ebay/amazon. XD

I'd just wait until it's a real product at retail and pay for it then. Plus, Kickstarted games of this nature don't have a very good track record.

You may be out of luck then, as I'm pretty sure this will be kickstarter-only. Due to the costs involved selling it at retail would simply cost too much due to all the extra middlemen expecting a hefty cut. Jasco's done several boardgames like this in the past though so they know what needs to be done at this point.

Everything. Organizing things around so I can stay on top of it all and actually get some work done on all the little and big things I've been trying to get done for years now.

  16. If nintendo was intending to woo people to buying digital, then yeah this is both insulting and counter productive to their goal. Personally their proposed plan will have zero effect on my buying habits, including making me decide to get a cross-platform game on the switch due to gold coins.
  17. Meanwhile the first thing I thought about was a reversed Keystone Kapers.
  18. To be perfectly honest if there's any copyright change needed, it would be something along the lines of "if the game becomes completely unplayable due to it being dependent on the developer/publisher to maintain a server and they're unwilling to do so, copyright should become unenforceable" Copyright is all about enriching the public domain (and one century now maybe, just maybe, industry will let something copyrighted expire into the public domain as the law intended) by giving time limited monopolies to the creator. But if copyright is essentially killing that thing, deliberately, then it should be public domained immediately - or at least the developer should not be able to claim damages for something they aren't selling and refuse to let work - unless they ARE hosting a server or selling server software for others to run their own. But that'd make sense and get in the way of profit. So don't hold your breath expecting it to become the case in our lifetime.
  19. In my opinion, if you have a LOT of space to fill, I'd wait until the next flash sale pops up - there's one every month over one of the weekends. Usually the second or third weekend of the month. Unlike on the PS4, the PS3 flash sale prices are -usually- quite significant. Back when I was more actively filling up the 1TB drive on my ps3 with digitals you'd regularly see games going as low as 99 cents at times.I have a bunch of ps1 and ps2 classics I snagged for 1.99 each or less for instance. At that price, even if I had the original discs, it was worth buying digital so I wouldn't have to pull out the discs as often if desired.
  20. Atari's recommended resolution was 192 back in the day to make sure the entire visible screen is actually visible on most TVs back in the 80s. But the 7800's DMA can do more. In 7800Basic you can specify up to 224. Not sure if it can do even more than that or not, as the DMA stops on scanline 240 (but doesn't actually start on line 0 of a tv frame iirc). The problem with going over 192 is that it means there's less time for the 7800 to do game logic, etc. Essentially it's up to the programmer to decide if they want the vertical resolution to be 192, 208, 0r 224, etc.
  21. I'm sure they got it covered. They'll just put all the odd ones on the first compilation, and all the evens on the second! I have the GC version for MMX1-6 already so I highly doubt I'll be swayed to get either of the MMX compilations if they're indeed going to split it up into two halves to double their profit. I sold X7 for a reason back in the day, and what I saw of X8 didn't instill me with any confidence. If they do have an all-for-one edition for the Mega Man Compilation on the Switch, I'll probably pick that up. Price pending I'm not sure if I'd be willing to get it digitally or insist on a disc. The smaller games like that I seem to prefer having instant access to, but I suppose we'll see.
  22. One quick search on atari age and I find it here. (Well, albert's post from 2004 linking it.) The parts about the soundchip design is at about 51:45 into the mp3.
  23. The source I had (Probably still do somewhere.) was of an audio speech of one of the guys from GCC telling events from their side of the story at a con or event of some kind. (So it's kind of bias/incorrect in some areas.) I'd assume the mp3 of it is here somewhere on atariage, as I'm sure that's where I picked it up.
  24. I remember the parts of GCC claiming they didn't have space for a pokey on the 7800 due to them including the TIA for BC, and that they were planning on making gumby chips. Of course, no sane corporation would outright say they were doing thing A to make profit selling thing B. However if we were to assume GCC worked the way a typical American company likes to operate, I would definitely believe they chose against adding a POKEY so they could sell GUMBYs. To think they can't fit a pokey on their own PCB is a bit of a joke unless Warner came down from up high and declared "thou shall not exceed these dimensions.". Either they could do an extra week or so of design work to make sure it would fit - and not gain anything for their time - or they could finish the job early and tell Warner they can buy some sound chips by the thousand later on. (For the lulz, you could say this is the first example of modern "dlc" in hardware form. - release something incomplete/early so you can sell the rest of it separately.)
