After my family mysteriously lost our 7800 (I'm convinced that that's what we had now but my memories are kinda blurry) I was only allowed to have portable consoles. The Game Boy definitely made up most of my childhood but I have really fond memories of playing the Genesis and SNES at my friend's houses.

Good thread. Been rediscovering the Genesis over the past two years.
My top picks:
-
Streets of Rage 2
Which is part of a very difficult three-way tie for my favorite all time game (the other's being Kirby's Dream Land for the Game Boy and Dig Dug Arcade/Famicom/2600) -
Gunstar Heroes
Might be the single coolest game I've ever played. The score is the second best in any video game ever, topped only by S.O.R. 2 -
Shining Force II
I'm not much for RPGs but something about this one had me enthralled from start to end. I see almost no flaws in it. Probably my favorite RPG of all time. -
Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master
I haven't played Revenge but I have a hard time imagining that it's better/smoother than this. -
Splatterhouse 2
I love the atmosphere of these games. I'm a huge beat'em up fan and this is one of my favorites. I may even like it more than the first. -
Streets of Rage
Incredible. Smooth as hell with an incredible soundtrack. It ranks beneath the top 5 if only because of the controller crushing frustration that comes with Mona and Lisa. -
Golden Axe I or II
I mentioned that I liked beat 'em up games right? I'm not a huge fan of Fantasy themed games but this one just plays so well and is one that I actually have memories of playing in an arcade near me growing up. Both the first and second are excellent so I'm ranking them together. I actually don't have that much of an issue with the third either, but it's surly not top 10 quality. -
Splatterhouse 3
Harder for me than the others due to the time limit imposed in most levels. I love the exploratory manner of the game and it changed it up a bit. I love the atmosphere and the story. Fantastic game. -
Contra Hard Corps
I wish Konami was still this good. Still haven't played Castlevania Bloodlines which I've heard is fantastic as well. I consider Hard Corps to be as good, maybe even better, than Alien Wars. -
Dynamite Heady
An amazing platformer that's as weird as it is refreshing and challenging.
Honorable mentions:
- Sonic 1, 2, 3 and Knuckles
- Super Fantasy Zone
- Super Hang On
- Space Harrier 2
- (all s titled games so far hmm)
- Mega Bomberman
- Ghosts 'n Ghouls
Games I need to play:
- M.U.S.H.A.
- Alien Soldier
- Castlevania Bloodlines
- Rocket Knight Adventures
I'm sure there's a bunch of other games that I should play as well. That's the best that I could come up with on the spot.

Streets of Rage 2

Voted Mario due to the lack of a Kirby option.

I just wanted to swing in and voice my support. I promised Ferg and Phil longer feedback someday since I actually have some experience with their systems, but since my feedback here will be the shortest I figured I'd tackle it first.
I've never played a Jag before and went into yours on the strength of your feedback alone and I have not been disappointed. It's been absolutely fantastic and I look forward to more. I'm especially stoked to hear about Tempest 2000 since Tempest ranks high among my favorite arcade games.
Forgive any poor grammar since I'm not proofreading this and I haven't had my coffee yet.

I posted this somewhere else but I'd really love to see this, or something like it, someday pop up on Nintendo's EShop. I don't see that happening sadly but I'd really love it.

Thanks, guys!
I'll do that when I get my taxes back or something!

Thanks!
Follow up then. Everywhere I look I'm finding them in that hundred plus range. Where would you suggest looking?

Hey all.
Long time lurker. Got back into atari after listening to Ferg's fantastic podcast which, as one might imagine, lead me to Phil's excellent 7800 one (I also love Shinto's Jag one).
Anyway, for the longest time I believed that I grew up with a 2600. Upon listening to the 7800 podcast and doing some research, I now think that I may have actually had a 7800 with a lot of 2600 games.
Sadly my dad has no idea where it went and he can't confirm which system it was.
Anyway, my question is this. I'm starting to look around to get one but I wanted to know what a good price for one is. I see a lot floating around 100-150 and I just wanted some feedback.
Also, is there a "general system question" thread? If so, and I missed it, just point the way and I'll repost that there.
Thanks in advance.
