I prefer the new sound (no abused duck for me). No forced perspective in this version?

Clever or interesting uses of the BRK instruction?
NostAlgae37 replied to AkashicRecord's topic in Atari 2600 Programming
Hi Joe, I went here: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/195210-very-early-wip-of-something-ive-been-working-on-for-ages/?p=2482601 And it says something about this being used to have more than one color per line on a sprite. Would that eat up a lot of memory resources and/or increase flicker? I ask because there is a homebrew game currently in development that this might possibly be useful for. Thanks! -
This one made me LOL (seriously), but as long as it's your XM module and not mine.

Nice to see you back on here, Akashic. Have you had any time to work on your Tetris game lately? I used to enjoy reading your postings on that thread even though I'm not that technically-minded (it always made me feel smarter when I understood a little of it. ) -
You had me at Raquel Welch.

My guess is it was their first pass at it, but someone at corporate thought it looked too "cartoonish" and wanted something more serious, hence the box art we ended up with. Personally, I much prefer it but as Mr. T once said, "I'm a cartoon guy."

Seconded.

Nice, but where are the airships? j/k

I second Congo Bongo, the 2600 version is terrible (not unexpectedly, though -- it would be hard to do justice to a game like that with such limitations).

Amazingly, you're getting even better... The color choices are very nice, and the shading and wrinkles on the clothing are quite convincing. I also appreciate the gratuitous usage of katakana in the background. What does it say -- Bra__ddo? (Admittedly, my Japanese proficiency is not what it once was but the characters are partially covered by the figure in the foreground.)

This looks very nice indeed, but you know that I am already a fan.

OK yeah, I figured as much. The only problem is that I stink even on Classic mode, either I need lots more practice or I should be spending my time elsewhere on games where I don't get killed instantly all the time.

While I'm honored to see ChaoticGrill nominated, it would have been nice to get a mention as the graphics artist for this game as I made all of the bonus item and character animation sprites. Oh well, I didn't do it for the glory; I did it because I wanted the game to be awesome.

Any chance of you adding an easy or "Baby" mode for us gimps who stink at Pac-Man? Or do you already consider "Classic" Monster AI the easy mode?

Chaotic Grill (BurgerTime remake) in progress
NostAlgae37 replied to splendidnut's topic in Atari 2600 Programming
I just played this and on stage 3 the enemies walk upwards on invisible ladders in the center of the screen until they either disappear completely at the top (never to return) or emerge at the bottom of the screen (and keep cycling in that fashion), so it appears that there are still bugs to be ironed out. -
I love how the terrain that the player is standing on looks quasi-3D.

No .a78 or .bin version for the 7800?

Hi Muddyfunster, I love this game! The graphics are beautiful to look at, and the game is so much fun. I think that the quality is better than most of the original releases for the 2600 that I actually bought back in the day, and if this were available as a cartridge back then I would have certainly bought it and played the heck out of it. Can I request that you to add one element to this game? Can you please add dirigibles as one of the obstacles/enemies? You can give them their own unique behavior / movement pattern as you deem fit, I just want to see them in the game because I dig airships / blimps and think that they are cool. Thanks very much for making this super-fun game and for listening to my ramblings.

I actually had the same idea as you to update the sprite graphics for Beef Drop to better match the arcade version of BurgerTime, but serviceable tools are unfortunately lacking. I'd be curious to know how Ken Siders made the graphics and inserted them into the game in the first place, but I guess it's easier if you have a working understanding of the programming side of things. I thought that jwierer's xmas hack was a cool (pun intended) idea and was considering expanding on that also by removing any vestiges of the original burger theme from it entirely, but it's not worth beating a dead horse grousing about why graphics editing tools for the 7800 either stink or don't exist so I'll just let it go and move on.

Nice work, that looks much better in my humble opinion. As for what characters I'd like to see in 2600 style, how about the Dig Dug cast (though I might be a bit biased on that front )?

I like it also, but it is a bit redolent of Hamburger Helper... I wonder if anyone else feels that way about it or if it just me. -
Better, but now the perspective is off on the "Sir Scottie's" part. The earlier letters need to be larger like you did with "Expedition" because they are closer to the camera and thus foreshortened.
-
This is very, very nice. I agree with what the other posters said about your use of colors and perspective, and also that something about that first E in "Expedition" looks forced (even with foreshortening taken into account). It is also discordant that the word "Expedition" appears to be curving concave to the camera, but "Sir Scottie's" appears flat (I would make it curve also).

Warren Robinett's book about making ADVENTURE
NostAlgae37 replied to Flojomojo's topic in Atari 2600
Agreed, it was almost like a bait-and-switch to rope the reader in. It seemed at first glance that he was espousing libertarian sentiments about privacy issues and the like which honestly I think that both conservatives and liberals could get behind, and then once you were hooked on his line and drawn in, he proceeded to clobber you mercilessly with his environmentalist "manifesto" as others have put it. I don't even think it was the content of his argument that was so off-putting (although like anyone who is attempting to persuade, he padded it with only favorable data), it was the condescending tone with which he delivered it, as if anyone who holds different views than his is automatically an intellectual dullard (or even worse, some kind of evil menace). The great thing about America is the ability to hold opposing views and be able to express them freely in a (relatively) fair system where what the majority decides is best usually wins out in the end. I think that sometimes we take it for granted that it is not like that in most places in the world.
