Yup, only parts of the code were found.
-
Maybe don't display the in-game "graphics". They are just arbitrary guessed.
-
I completely disagree (so SPIN should be my language
). If you indent blocks, why wasting any space for brackets? If absolutely hate this kind of bloated coding. In the end you need a 30" LCD to see even a small code block. -
No, that's what I meant.I suppose I confused them with the ball.Pretty sure VDELPx has no effect on missiles, or am I misunderstanding what you mean? -
Before detailing the ring kernel any further, a decision has to be made how to draw the other objects. The sprites cannot be used here, so that only leaves the ball and the missiles.
The other objects are:
a) player's ship
b) player's shots
c) mines
d) gun shot
I can see two options:
1. Draw everything with the ball and reposition it inside the kernel to reduce flickering. Since the most busy parts of the ring kernels already extend a bit into the other line, this will become pretty tricky.
2. Use the missiles too (for player's shots and mines). One had to disable and re-enable three-copy mode and probably VDELPx (not 100% sure) for this. Also the missiles can only be drawn in the other lines, where no shield is displayed.
What do you think? Any other options you can think of and which option is the better one?

That would save one pointer, but make the kernel a bit more complicated.
Anyway, I optimized my original layout. I removed the stack usage (which costs some CPU time) and by using the same pointer in more than one kernel (see colourful picture above), I reduced the pointers to 30 (=60 bytes).
The two middle kernels could be merged, but then the drawn parts would become too large, causing the necessary precalculated data to increase massively. Just imagine the possible combinations of 3 or more rotating on/off segments!
Scott sure had some fun with optimizing his setup too.

You mean the gun? I would like to have that a bit larger than 8 pixel, maybe 12 pixel.
-
After thinking about it some more, I don't think going to just 5 GRPx writes will help much (if any). There will be too many sprites, where two rings have to be merged. With 6 GRPx writes, especially the central 2 sprites (where later the gun will be too) can always be drawn from just one pointer and left and right from that due too more sprites, the overlapping is reduced.
Hope that makes sense.

Thanks.
Looks like the arcade rings are a bit less than 1/4th of the width and 1/3rd of the height of the screen. And the rings are ~1/40th of the screen width apart.
So a 40 pixel outer ring should be big enough. 36 pixel would be the best match, but I think that might become a bit too small. And the rings should be 4 pixel apart.
-
Good idea.

Originally I wanted the GRPx copies aligned to the PF and use the PF color for coloring the rings. But then I realized that that would cause large all black areas around the rings.
With just 40 pixel, I would sure save quite some pointers.
I have attached two new layout graphics for 40 pixels (3 and 4 pixel gap).
BTW: I couldn't find a screenshot, which shows the full screen in relation to the ring size. Do you know that relation?

I just found this blog entry (go figure!).
The kernel looks excellent and I really hope eventually this will turn into something playable.

After reading your review, I will finally give another try.

I got a dead cheap Archos 1 Vision recently. 4GB, 1.5"TFT, even plays FLAC for ~€26. I got a coupon and only payed ~€13. A bargain!
Its far from being perfect, but suits my daily needs. And if it gets broken or lost, well, who cares.

-
I am lazy too, but I really doubt that thing can really clean my cork floors. What do you think? Also I read that, unlike the vacuum cleaner, this one has to be charged and started manually. Is that true?

I don't know this guy, but IMO there is way too much PC invloved here.
By those standards, German TV would sound like "Ich beep auf die beep beep!"

Why do people always stereotype other people? Why must a golf professional be holy where a football player can be evil? Why does the image mean more than the profession?
E.g. I do not like someone like Schumacher personally (IMO Damian Hill or Mika Häkkinen seem much nicer persons, if I had to chose someone for a holiday trip, I would favor them over Schumacher all day), but I am still a fan of Schumacher because of his wonderful profession. And that's what should count first, not if he has a beautiful wife or donates all his money for charity.
Actually I am sick of all those streamlined professionals which have been trained to look good at TV. I blame this on the advertising business which helps them so make absurd money if they play a certain role. Thanks to stupid customers who buy those lies.
And they do "play" that role! I watched some excerpts of Tiger Woods eating humble pie. That was terribly disgusting! He is a great golf player but a very, very bad actor. Does anyone actually believe a word he said? To me it was like he was begging on his knees to get his million $$$ sponsor contracts back and there was not a single fraction of self respect left.

If I would be interested in golf, I would still respect him as a great player. But outside the golf green, I can only recognize him as a dirty liar (and that's NOT because of his private life!), a money hooker who sold his soul.
-
From a broader perspective, this shows how little control a consumer has over anything which is dependent on the network for functionality. And it gets worse! Because everything it networked now.
The new digital video standards allow full control about the user. E.g. here in Germany, the private networks plan to prohibit skipping advertising blocks when transmitting with the new HD+ standard. Timeshift and recording will still work, but you are forced to watch the advertising too. What's next? Will they ask you control questions about the advertising to let you continue watching?

I really hope this will backfire at them and nobody buys those HD+ recorders.

The European safety and environment standards are extremely strict. Even the ultra compact Smart is constructed to survive when hitting a Mercedes S-class. And the french cars are no worse.http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=DE&v=TytcvBjCb4YChinese cars are a different story.
