It's not a game that requires much color, so you could nearly a B/W version and it would still rock.
Color is no problem. The problem compared to Missile Command is, that large areas had to flicker. In Surround they used low resolution playfiled graphics, which won't work for Qix.
Look at Stell-A-Sketch with large areas filled, the flicker is IMO horrible.

Originally posted by The Night Phantom:Thomas, can you compare/contrast this situation with the display of, say, the “dots” (frequently undotlike) in the Pac-Man games or the “mushrooms” inCentipedeandMillipede? As a minimally informed 2600 programming layman, it seems to me that similar techniques could be used in a 2600Qixas well.
The difference is, that the "dots" of Pac Man and Centipede are rastered (1 dot = 4 pixel). That means, the horizontal positions and sizes are not flexible. But for Qix you need that flexibility in both directions.
If you accept rastering in horizontal direction the game would become different, more like Amidar.

Originally posted by The Night Phantom:Indeed, flickering Sparx would be rather appropriate, and I think a flickering Qix (or two ) wouldn't be so bad either.
The problem is, that the whole filled areas had to flicker. And that is very annoying.
Yes, you could try to reduce that with mixing playfield and player graphics, but that makes the kernel extremely complicated (or impossible) and requires some rather complicated setup code for the kernel too.
In the end, I didn't find a solution to do it that way.

If you know the Supercharger game Stell-A-Sketch you get the idea.

I have thought about doing a 2600 version of Qix myself (because I love the game idea), but the limitations of the 2600 make it impossible without a LOT of flicker.

Pong -> 2600 -> C64 -> PCs
That's all!

I didn't find any pictures of my large, black Competition Pro joystick on the linked pages. Is is rare in the US?

Yes, that's exactly what the game does.

No, you won't loose the posts, that's what Alex and Albert promised.
And I hope some day, they'll find the old nexus posts and put them online again.
There was a thread about the new software some weeks ago on the web site comments board.

Just search for posts from these members and you'll find the names (Vic George and [hurt]138).

They are simply green and red, what difference do you mean?
With the complementary nature of those colors, looking thru the glasses of one color makes all objects of the other complementary color become invisible (=black).
I just don't see how this works with red/blue because they aren't complementary.
BTW: That also works for people that are red/green blind, because the glasses are doing the filtering, not your brain.

Originally posted by StanJr:Interesting Thomas. What is the reason that Germans have red/green 3d glasses, and America has red/blue? Is the effect different?
I always thought you need complementary colors (like red and green) to get a nice B/W picture.
Perhaps the US version is more orange than red? Then my theory would work again.
I don't know if the effect is different, because I can't compare.
-
If you limit the 3d-effects to the player missile/graphics and accept some flicker, I think something should be possible. But I don't know how complicated the maths are
And I don't think, that the result would be very good.
I have been experimenting with another way of "true" 3d, wireframe graphics. Perhaps one (not to soon) day I'll find the time and fun again to complete my demo. But I doubt, there is enough flexibility possible to make a whole game out of it.
BTW: In Germany we are more used to red/green glasses.

There is no problem with the sound.
The colours might be a problem, because NTSC games have a different palette, so the colors will sometimes look weird (e.g red trees).
And if the game does an odd number of scanlines everything will be in B/W. Fortunately there are not to many games doing so.

Yup, that's exactly what worked for me.

A very dirty (an efficient )assembler trick. You change parts of the code on the fly.
Like changing e.g.
code
if (i < 0)
into
code
while (j != 5)
while the program is running. Cool, isn't it?

AFAIK the Gemini is only 99% compatible with the 2600, so expect some games to be not working.
I'm owning a Rinco clone with 128 built-in games (the box says 320 and the letters are in arabic). All games are 4K and pirated versions of official titels. If you like the originals for their gameplay then you'll like the clones too.

Gunfight is XYPE game #1!
And all XYPE games have top gameplay quality.
Well, perhaps I'm not the most objective person to say that...
