  1. If you're talking about magnetic media, this is a worthwhile, if mildly fightening read: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-36385839
  2. The Doom Story: Kill all the bad guys. Survive to the end. Works for me. I see games like Doom as a puzzle that needs solving.
  3. That's a pretty poor statement IMHO. My wife and I are a partnership, and we have limitations on what can be spent, without us having to fall back on the small amount we have saved, so if it is a purchase of over a certain value, we will discuss. I can usually go up to about £100 a month, if it's not a 5 week month. PayPal comes directly out of our joint account, and not a credit card. I do have a credit card for emergencies, but it's almost never used, and certainly not for fripperies like extending my retro collection. It's not a stupid statement, it's working together to stay within our modest budget. I'm sure there are folks out there who do wait until payday, but still use credit anyway, but after recovering from some serious debt due to my business folding in the 2008/9 crash in the UK, managing and maintaining safe levels of spending, even for small amounts, is important to us, and we will discuss.
  4. Personally I like Quake 2 better than Quake, and I loved the multiplayer element, especially setting up my own servers with bots. Doom 2016 is on my list of next games to buy, but I've got a lot on atm, as I am off to a 2 day karate black belt seminar at the end of June, plus the Atari ST projects I have lined up, all of which will take up a little more money that I have free to spend, due to a car replacement. It will happen though, maybe I can convince my wife i need it as a wedding anniversary gift, as it's ours in June
  5. This is a question that I can only answer by saying "I will buy this regardless, due to my age old love of Doom". It's just a question of when I guess, but I am still playing original Doom to this day, albeit now on my Shield tablet, and it still plays as well today as it always did. I have Doom2 and Doom3 BFG edition on my Shield too, plus some expansions, and I've played it on everything from DOS to Windows to PSOne, PSP and a number of less well known handheld platforms. Provided they have managed to capture the essence of the original game, at least in part, it should be wicked. I guess I'll have to vote with my wallet.
  6. OK, I'm going to try and kick start this thread again with some more suggestions: Neo Geo Pocket Colour Sony PSP GP32 & GP2X Dicuss
  7. If I remember rightly, just unzip the file, and run the Hatari executable, then if I recall, F12 opens up the settings panel, the rest is quite obvious if you've managed to get Steem running.
  8. Yep, I get that. The other thing for me, is that there is such amazing support for these machines, which just wasn't around BITD(No internet, what could you do?). For example, I have been modding my Atari ST to add the likes of IDE and 1.44MB floppy support, and fixing up the video output on my 65XE, which is now pin sharp. There isn't so much that you can do with the likes of the MegaDrive (Genesis), so I guess the ability to tinker with the machines plays a part for me. Some systems have also fallen into my lap, such as a Spectrum +2 and Atari 2600, which I was given, then others which I've just been lucky to get on eBay, such as an ICL One Per Desk, which is a Sinclair QL in a different coat. And no matter what people say, emulators (I could totally replicate my collection with emulators) are just not the same as the real thing. Also, historical interest plays a part, because there was the point where we transitioned from the original games consoles, to home computers, and where computers were bringing something new, such as custom chipsets, like in the Atari 400/800/XL/XE series, and similarly later on in the Amigas. I don't really play a lot of retro games, as I don't really have the time right now, so I guess I'm mostly putting stuff aside for my retirement, so really for me I guess the key factor is "Is it interesting?"
  9. For me there was the element of nostalgia, especially around the Atari 8/16 bits and other machines I had when I was younger, but ditched along the way at some point, then wished I hadn't. But it was also about getting hold of some of the machines that I simply couldn't afford, like the Sinclair QL (I now have 2, one boxed), or missed out on for some other reason. It's odd though, I don't feel anything for the Sega Megadrive I had, and am not bothered about getting another, but I actually still have an Atari 65XE that I've had from childhood, something made me hold onto it through multiple moves and god knows what else.
  10. You could tru using something else as a 'hub'. I have an old DVD recorder that has SCART, composite, HDMI and all sorts of other inputs, and I plug devices into that in order to get around tuner issues as such, works a treat, and I just feed it's output to the digital TV I have.
  11. Another thought here, has anybody tried to build an ST clone out of a case and a raspberry Pi? I was thinking it might be possible to interface the ST keyboard via the GPIO interface on the Pi, or maybe transplant modern keyboard electronics into the ST item. I have a couple of spare Pi atm, so may look into it, though I'm considering a CosmoEx, so one Pi may get used :-)
  12. You're welcome. You could also try Hatari, another emulator, but I've heard it's pretty solid and may help with your Midi woes.
  13. You would need to have a meter that will read amps, though most modern meters do. It would need to be in line to measure amps. Low voltage will have an effect as power in watts = volts X amps, and if both are low, the overall power delivered is low resulting in the ST not running properly.
  14. If I'm honest, I would not use RF for video output, because it is terrible!! I use one of these for my 65XE: https://www.retrogamingcables.co.uk/atari-8-bit-svideo-cable-for-800-65xe-130xe-for-sale Admittedly my 65XE has an ultravideo mod (http://blog.3b2.sk/igi/file.axd?file=2012%2F5%2FUltraVideo+XE+1.0.pdf, there is a different one for the 800XL), and has the best picture quality of any Atari 8 bit I've ever owned, but a cable such as this should give you a decent picture without any mods at all for your 800XL on a modern TV with s-video in.
  15. Dreamcast for me, and I think if it had had a decent network adapter, rather than the modem, as standard, it would have had a much longer lifespan. I still have mine :-) Lynx 2, and probably Mattell Aquarius (Don't shout me down) as it was a surprisingly good little machine.
  16. The Mono VGA cable I bought, but I'll have a look to see if there is space for inline resistors. The scart cable I'm building does have inline resistors I'll let you know what happens.
  17. If the original PSU is unstable (Could be 25 or more years old), you may get the voltage as reading ok, but the current may be insufficient, and the problem with the floppy is just a symptom of lack of current from the PSU. For example, the PSU is rated for 3A at 5V, which works out to 15Watts. If the PSU is still delivering 5v, but only 2A, that means 10Watts, so probably not enough power. To measure power, you need to put a meter inline, which is a little difficult as you need to have it plugged into a suitable load i.e. an Atari ST in order to check this.
  18. Changing to a pure black background stopped the flickering Chris, so it's definitely related to the background pattern, though I can still see a small amount of banding across the screen, much like the old 8 bit Atari's. On another note, I've moved forward a bit with my scart cable build, hoping to finish by this weekend and if all is good I will test with the scart to HDMI adapter, which works nicely with some of my other kit. Then I can look at how I can interface with the STE internally. Those damn 13 pin plugs are buggers to solder though, especially with no cup on the pin end for the wires.
  19. Agussy, this is a very good point, as far as the PSU goes I have replaced all of the caps in mine (Even though it was working), Exxos does cap kits here, though I would suggest you speak to him first to see if a US cap kit is possible. It's about 30 minutes work all told. His store is here: http://www.exxoshost.co.uk/atari/last/store.htm PicoPSUs are a good option, but require a bit more modding, but definitely a way to go. Also, is there anybody who can loan you a PSU just to test out that your mainboard is ok?
