  1. We did very well! Much better than expected, but we got caught with our pants down and not enough inventory. I remember selling out of product just before Christmas. We had so many back-orders that we had to go to Denver and purchase inventory from most of our competitor's, in order to keep our customers happy. I personally bought all of the inventory from Incredible Universe that season. Atari provided us with some credit in order to help pay for the difference between retail and wholesale, although the margin was small anyway. My guess is that we sold more Jaguar' per capita than anywhere in the US during that time. We also sold quite a few lynx systems. I know we sold many more Atari systems than KB Toys (also in the mall) sold in all video game products total.

I thought the name sounded familiar. I do remember a store selling Jaguar system in 1998/99 maybe into 2000. It was your store, but after you moved to the regular store front. The Boulder/Longmont area had a pretty active game community.

What I wouldn't give to move back to the area... It was amazing to see the mountains every day, and Boulder was an amazing city... I could probably go on for awhile!

  2. Why do the frogs "walk" on the water? Why don't they fall in if they go off the pad?

Does the CD version require anything else to work, or does it work by itself?

The land where Frog Feast takes place has some weird physics.. I can't explain it.

They do fall in and start swimming.

The CD version is ready to play on any Jaguar CD system.

  3. Interesting to see a game released on so many platforms, and thus what could be achieved

in future using the same methodology. Well done for the effort of planning, porting, delivering.

I look forward to seeing further news on your blog about more source releases and platforms!

    Hi justclaws,

    Thanks for the comments.

Frog Feast has done surprisingly well, for a homebrew project. Of course, the Jaguar CD version is currently the biggest seller. The CD-i version generated a pretty big buzz, and we still see orders trickling in for the other systems. One of the things I discovered is that the excitement around a game can be as rewarding as the money coming in from sales. It's fun being part of the excitement of a new release.

The methodology indeed has worked well. I need to make some changes to the code, for the next project, but a lot of the code is reusable. Developing on many different systems has been a positive experience; it helps maintain motivation, and has generated additional sales. Getting a game running on a new system is very exciting.

  4. What if I were to have talks with a few major game companies and see if I can

convince them to post binaries on their web sites so folks could purchase them

at reasonable prices? For example , If I were some how able to convince

Infogrammes to release older jag games on the Atari web site for DL for a

reasonable fee? OR maybe even convince Midway to do the same for some

roms of old games for use on emulators? Both these companies need all the

money they can get as it is and this may very well be a way to satisfy both

crowds....now, I already know the pitfalls of such an experiment but if there

is some way to make this safe, I bet they would go for it. I think these companies

would do anything right now to gain a little revenue.

I think they would be more open to you licensing the roms, and doing it on your own or something similar.

Probably the best idea would be to license then, and whore them out as a PC release with an emulator.

You could probably, at that point, negotiate for a download license also.

The only problem I can see is that they may want a sales guarantee.

Gametap has done a decent job with what they've done, and they do carry some Atari (non Jaguar) games. Granted, you don't own them.

  5. If you have a bad CD, please follow the following instructions:

I need a picture of a visibly broken CD (including a torn label), with the number still intact and visible.

This needs to be sent from the same e-mail address you payed with paypal. Also, please include your address to speed up the process.

    Send these to:

    cdoty (at) rastersoft (dot) net.

  6. If I can't get it working properly, I may have to rely on the Jag2Card version..

I ran into trouble somewhere using Jag2Card. It worked fine on the developer flash cartridge, but wouldn't work on a 2 or 4 chip eprom board. I'm not sure what caused the problem.

Does the Jaguar show a Red screen if there is an encryption error?

The cartridge only showed a red screen if the roms were swapped, and would usually sit at the normal boot screen.

But, that pushed me to figure out the problem with the original cartridge version. Moving the graphics into ram fixed the issue with the music slowdown. It runs flawlessly from the cartridge now. I was focusing on the wrong issue, initially.

  7. Seems you have still a misunderstanding of this whole stuff (the options someone has to get a program executed by the Jaguar).

No, I realize it can be used to put a BJL compatible program on a cartridge, but I would like use ALN to achieve the same results, and have with the exception of the mod file playing correctly.

The Jag2Card version works fine, and I've elminated the speed issue, as the mod file has been moved to ram. It would seem to be more an issue of some unitialized data or something. Although I only use const 'data' and all global variables are uninitialized, and set in the program. Only local variables are assigned initial values.

If I can't get it working properly, I may have to rely on the Jag2Card version..

  8. If it is ok for you and your customers that the cartridge-version and the CD-version of your game are identical,

and assuming that the CD-version consist of just a single file, then you could use one of my tools to create the cartridge.

I just realized that this could be used to see if the CD version, converted to a cartridge, has the same issues. This could help isolate the problem.

  9. I'm interested in getting an MSX computer, but since there are so many models available, I don't know which one to get. I'd at least want an MSX2 compatible system, but an MSX2+ wouldn't be bad either (although not much used the extra modes). I have yet to see a TurboR compatible system for sale, but I think even less games were made for it than the MS2+ anyway.

I've been offered a FS-A1WSX (MSX2+) system for $100, but I'm not sure if I should hold out for a better system. The FS-A1WSX is nice in that it's a MSX2+ system, but from what I can tell it only has one cartridge port and I've been told that the belt on the disk drive has a bad tendency to wear out in this model. I'm also afraid of the voltage difference (Japan vs US), but that's going to be a problem with any MSX system I think.

    Any suggestions?

If money is truely not an issue, get the Panasonic FS A1 GT. This is probably the most advanced MSX computer available. If I remember right, one of these went for about $500 on Yahoo Japan a few years ago.

For a little less money, you can get a Pansonic FS A1 ST. This is still a MSX Turbo R system, and should play all released Turbo R games (I believe). I got one of these for less than $200 on Yahoo Japan. Even with surface shipping and JapanShoppingMall.com fees, I think it was right around $200 total.

The number of Turbo R games is small, so MSX 2+ is probably good enough to play 99+% of the games out there. There are quite a few MSX 2+ games (cart and disks) available. You might find a better price on Yahoo Japan, even with the surface shipping and fees, other shipping options get a lot more expensive. These are very common in Japan.

The voltage difference isn't an issue at all between the US and Japan. I'm not sure there's technically a difference, probably just how it's listed. A US line can vary by 10% (or more) from 100v to 120v. I would assume the Japanese system is the same, and maybe they list the lower limit, rather than the nominal.

Cool. Is this a unique cable or can I use a pre-existing cable for another system (like a C-64)?

The connector on the CX5M is the same as the C-64/Atari 400/800. I assume this is a standard MSX connector.

I think this model only has one cartridge port, but that's not really a problem. The big problem is cartridge based software. Buying cartridges online is expensive and shipping is usually killer. Disk based software is much easier to obtain since you can make copies on a PC assuming you have an ample supply of 720K disks (which I do). I'm not sure how software is cartridge only. I assume many of the best cartridge games were later ported to disk.

Superb Articles from Japan sells MSX cartridges for a good price, and shipping from Japan isn't too bad:

I bought 4 of his cheap ($3 and $4 cartridges), and paid $24 including airmail shipping.

  10. That is most likely the trouble. If you are running from an alpine you wont ever notice as you are running from

SRAM on teh Alpine...... Alot faster. The cart is not fastenough for ROM...some tricks can be done Im sure but it

is better to load that sucker in main ram.

    Thanks for the help.

I've implemented the fix, just haven't tested it on the Flash Cart yet.

  11. I may have jumped the gun a little. It looks like the 27c400/800 are pin compatible with the tc5316200. I'm not sure if the tc5316200 and tc5716200 are the same, though. If I remember correctly the 53x is a masked rom and a 57x is an EPROM (or something like that).

Also, since I will be burning 2 4Mbit roms, but encrypting a 16 Mbit rom, how does that affect encryption? Should I pad the file with 0x00 or 0xFF?
