Wow, you timeline is awesome.  Nice work!

I think you are right to use newspaper ads as good source for release timeframes.

Unless someone produces a ledger from Atari Sales, there really is not a better way to track those dates.

  1. This year for Christmas  bought myself new copies of River Raid and Vanguard for the VCS so I could open them and try to recapture some of the feeling of 1982.   I bought the games with very little eBay research, choosing the price over most everything else.   At the  same time, I don't own a working 2600, and my 7800 is in a box in the garage that I've yet to be able to break into, so I have to settle on on using my Retron '77 (which I've only ever used with the community build firmware and SD slot, never for actual cartridges).

I knew it would be difficult to capture the same feelings of being 12 years old, but damn it, if it didn't work anyway!  River Raid and Vanguard are such good games, they transcended my set-up and still made me happy.

There are many ways in which I could have done this better, and it could have gone even more wrong too, but in the end I still feel like I achieved my goal at about the D+/C- level, which is a passing grade.

Here is link to my unboxing and playing video of the experience.

Need to dig my 7800 out of the Garage.  I have Rikki and Vikki and Time Salvo sitting right here unplayed.

Next year I'll probably get several homebrews and do it right.

  2. Got a rona test today. I was expecting the brain-hungry zombie aardvark treatment, but all she did was rub the inside of my nostrils a little with a cotton swab.

  4. I was looking at the first issue of Electronic Games, and I came across a piece where they were "comparing" Asteroids and Space Invaders. They tried to claim that Midway developed Galaxian and it was a successor to Space Invaders.

Yeah, at that time the Katz/Kunkel/Worley were some of the only people who even took video games seriously as a wave of the future.

Information was low back then.   I'm sure it was not clear if Midway was making games or importing them from Japan at that point.

Hmm...doesn't look dangerous, whatever it is.
