  1. I was thinking how BITD, when Atari and ColecoVision were king, you almost never heard them mentioned or advertised on TV, give or take a few Saturday morning ads, or good 80's movies that knew how to sprinkle in pop culture references...Back then it was almost as rare as hearing a real heavy metal song on the radio.

      This is the reason why I didn't get excited for a game system until the NES and then the Gameboy came out. Mom has always said she wondered why I didn't get into console gaming a bit earlier, but being that I got into arcade and handheld games right after the crash, there was no real advertising or word of mouth until Nintendo hit the market.

      I tend to think of it as 95% word of mouth and video game magazines back then...I think someone could get the wrong idea by say, watching YouTube ads from the old days.  I remember them being quite rare actually...On the other hand, at school my friends and I talked video games (home and arcade) quite a bit.

      The same reason goes for computer games back in the 80's.  They were usually advertised late at night during a movie.  (Goto 1:46)
