  1. I'd rather have a Flashback any day of the week than a "New VCS",  and Yes I am still Angry nutari called it this...Actually I Do have a bunch of them and (maybe excluding the very first one) they are neat products, that had a vision, a raison d'etre (forgive the Americanization, I don't have the accents on my Netbook), a niche if you will, and even as a closed system, a plug and play, they have games!  All this in a cooler looking VCS type shell that cost a tenth of the tacobox...

I'm not surprised. They don't treat criticism as an opportunity to take feedback, improve or better communicate with their community. They desperately hide it and banish anyone who dares to ask any questions they can't or won't answer.

These are not the actions of a company that cares about its community.

But I also understand that the PR company may be under Atari's thumb; after all we know Atari is more than willing to just stop paying people who don't tow the line.

haha,  You think they pay people...

Thing is, these aren't review units for YouTubers,  these are for the "developers",...You know those "developers" making "games" for the "system"...

But do you have Beefstake Tomatoes (and box)?

I do not.  (heh)  The only Boxed FOX game I have from BITD is Mega Force...But a little bit later I got Flash Gordon loose, then Bank Heist.  Actually Bank Heist was an interesting one as my friend and I each pitched in half  (and pretty sure it was on sale at $19.99) and then took turns "co-owning" the game.  I wonder if he ended up with the box?  I know I ended up with the game...I still keep up with his brother from time to time, but haven't really talked to him in years...But I know he never kept up with Atari since he gave his Atari to me :)

  4. So are "Air" and "Vapor"ware, the same type of unconsole?  Can you dig it?

Based on the title alone,    I'll just leave this here...

PS  The Eternal Question:  When is nutari gonna get Kicked in the Taco and give up on this VCAss Mess?  This is...A hidden message!...Did U find it?   Good Job!   Cheers!  Get yourself a ROLO out of my desk and take some "free money" out of petty cash...Tell'em GoldLeader said it was OK...It's fine no one's gonna read this I'm sure...

Gold, you're right about the rebate.  Here's a page from the Fox coupon book.

    Thanks JayAre!

Good job on that.   I knew there must be a reason I cut up a perfectly good box...And back then $5 went a lot further than today.  Still, I Now wish I had the back of the box LOL...

  6. A little different than what you're asking, but I know places around here jacked up the price of Pac-Man when it came out.  It started in the usual stores as a regular priced game,  but when I got my copy, ONE DAY after my friend told me it had come out (and he bought his at $29.99);  I had my mom drive to 3 or 4 stores before we found one where it wasn't Sold Out.  So, even though I'd played it and knew it wasn't all it was cracked up to be, buying into the hype and mania, if you will, I felt I HAD to have it.  I paid $37.95 for it at a place ironically called PAY N SAVE.

Another one that seemed high,  was when I paid $34.95 for Mega Force, which I had played on the kiosk at Montgomery Wards and was just blown away by the graphics (flicker and all)...Now, why we were cutting up the boxes to send parts to 20th Century Fox, I don't remember...A rebate perhaps?

  7. I'll agree with those who say yes to the 7800 for mostly the same reasons.  I think I have others in my head but they won't make a lot of sense to a normal person.  For one thing I see a lot of potential in the 7800 that may not have been utilized back in the day;  And like I say,  I can't begin to argue that as any kind of selling point, nor even explain it to anyone to where it makes sense.  It's kind of like my reasons for Always and completely preferring the old Battlestar Galactica to the lame one SeeFee tried to thrust upon us some years back, where they ruined the actual universe for it right off the bat,  But that is another topic (that I'd be smart to avoid).  The homebrew scene feels like vindication in many ways for the system, and the games are not arcade accurate but still feel like the home versions, if that makes sense.   There's something a bit endearing to me about that.  For example,  I bought Astro Blaster and it was way better than the 2600 could have Ever done, but still felt different than the arcade game (with it's multi color sprites),  then I bought Dungeon Stalker because I already have Dark Cavern on 2600 and I love it,  Then I bought Armor Attack II because it Never existed in the arcades, but probably should have, and Rikki & Vikki is Awesome as an NES-Like game, but native to the Atari 7800...I also recommend getting either an Edladdin controller,  or getting an NES type pad for 7800 (Either a Europad or converted NES type off eBay, etc.).   Plus, back to original retail,  I personally really liked the game Jinks (Yeah, it was me, YMMV), because it felt like an advanced Atari 2600 game.  It was weird, quirky, original and had different color palettes for different levels, plus its own artistic style, much like an old 2600 game might have.  In fact, that might be it;  When all is said and done, playing an Atari 7800 still feels like I'm playing an Atari.  It has its own feel compared to, say, an NES, which generally has smaller sprites and uses tiles*...

I'm glad you bought one.  I hope you like it!  I'll always have a huge soft spot for the 7800!   :)

*I'm not a programmer, so take my off the cuff comments as observations, not something where I'm actually comparing the machines...

    Cheers!

Certainly higher than it should be, but in his defense, that's one of the nicest ones I've seen.  It really does look like maybe it was never used, just displayed...Joysticks look new.

Although, on second glance, it does have an RCA to Coax adapter...If it was never used, would it have one of those?  Maybe he displayed it hooked up to the TV?   Or, perhaps I'm giving this way too much thought from my tired brain.

Cheers! Looking forward to my next Grolsch. The beer, no Bavarian is able to pronounce proper.

    Isn't it just "Grolsch"?

Oh, except you're supposed to say the G backwards, Roll the R, and stand on your head while pronouncing the final H.

LOL.  Well, my absolute favourite beer at the moment is an oatmeal stout from Montreal - https://mcauslan.com/en/beer-facts/?brand=st-ambroise-en&product-446

Checkout the reviews, it's a damn fine beer.

    Wow!   That Stout looks Yummy!

It would go well with homebrews and the Phoenix I think...

I hope ya posted it in the beer thread...(If I weren't going to bed in 5 seconds I'd link to the thread haha...)

    Well, OK...

I think they will capitalize on the pictures of family and friends playing together and how cool the system will look. Of course we'll probably see screenshots of games packed in and future releases.  Just some thoughts...

Ah, the old "fool your younger brother into thinking he is controlling the single-player game" trick.  It's tough when you only own two NES carts and both are Super Mario Bros.  But cool that your NES works with the power off.

@BigDumer This post is the funniest thing I've read in a long time!  And even though I'm half asleep (and should really go to bed) and I had to think and process it...And it's from 3 days ago, and I'm 3 pages back...You win the Internet as far as I'm concerned.

It's gonna be hard to sleep when I keep laughing myself back into waking consciousness...

  12. Good question!

    Favorite:

Adventure, Pinball, RPGs,  games with mazes and robots in them, Shmups (OK I can't believe I just used that word after thinking it was so dumb when it first came out), 80's Arcade games, Atari Games!, Games with Haunted Houses in them, Platformers, Flatpormers, Car Combat, Racing games if they have spectacular crashes or stunt modes, Games with a cool art style, 90's games  I played at home when I was in college, Ultimate Qix because I believe that game on Genesis to be a genre in itself, Games with a picture of an arcade game on the box, Games with Ghosts, Games with Castles, Action, Games with evil planets to explore and things to shoot, Survival Horror, Futuristic looking games, Games with vampires, zombies, or werewolves, ...Text adventures based on racing golf shmups (OK Not really, just seeing if you're still paying attention), Most vector games, Overhead rabbit simulators, War games if they have Warlords or Tank Pongs, Bowling games if they came with the Wii, games with cool graphics and music, Puzzle games like Bust A Move or Super Columns, Things that have dragons,  Star Wars or Tron games,...and whatever Mr. Do! is.

    Least Favorite:

Sports (Except Mutant League, NBA Jam, and Tecmo Bowl, plus maybe some golf, pool, or mini golf games), card games, Probably many FPSs (but the jury is kinda out on that one), Tile games (Except for Mahjong on Game Boy or Neo Geo Pocket, but that's different), games that would probably be cool IF I spoke Japanese, Fighters (Except Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat series), Flight simulators where ya have to read the instructions (So...Flight simulators), Licensed games (Ha!  Remember when most of them sucked?), Baseball games because there is way too many (for Famicom/Super Famicom), Pachinko games, Seriously can a fella buy just one game lot for Super Famicom without a dozen Baseball, tile, and pachinko games??  And how come every pawn shop is filled with So many Sports games for Genesis and 6 copies of Top Gun for NES? Games with lousy control, and games like Twisted Metal for PS3 where all they had to frikkin' do was let me control my goddang car with the D-Pad so I could Rule the Road like always but NOOOOOOOooooooooo!

It's cheaper because you can eliminate contacts. At $0.02 per contact, for example, a million units sold may save the company $8,000 - $10,000 a year. Simpler molding too, no battery box. No cover. Different certification and testing. It all adds up, to maybe $50,000 or more per year. Maybe half a million over the product lifecycle? AND it's no waste to the company if it keeps you buying more. Rather the opposite!

Did you say Half a Million?   The only thing I see these guys producing half a million of...is Farts.

  14. I'd been meaning to post that I got the game!

I've been so busy that I haven't had a chance to open it, but that will happen soon enough.

I hope everyone gets theirs and none are lost in the mail.

Wow! Did you have to do any major maintenance on it over the years?

Actually no.  There was a slightly messed up piece of the cab itself that had been bondoed (if ya can believe it), but that was only a couple of inches or so of real estate.  At the time I sold it, it needed the rubber doughnut shaped gasket at the center of that 360 degree joystick, which made it center itself.  The original had cracked and decayed,  I assume that would be an easy fix if the part could be had.  (Trying to remember it all here...) about the last 20+ years of its life were spent in a room at my dad's house and it was never really played at that point, but it worked fine if you turned it on except for the joystick not centering.

PS  I sold it for 6 times what I paid for it! ;)

  16. ^I watched about 90 seconds worth and I gotta admit, until now I had no idea how a "Pong Quest" game could work.   Now,  I think it would be fun, if it was on a console and played with a joystick for exploring/moving/overworld type stuff, and a Paddle for the Pong battles.

And yet, Atari has never mentioned whether or not this game would grace their unconsole.   And even though "No news is good news",  I highly doubt it will.

I once bought a replacement Midway control panel from arcadeshop.com, that came with a 4-way microswitch based joystick - forget the make. But it was sooo noisy, resonating against the metal CP, that I immediately swapped it out. And yeah, the game volume was plenty loud, just didn't matter in this case.

I believe you....But rarely get the chance to use that cute little confused icon.

Goes for any arcade machine really, my Turbo machine has 2 speakers plus a woofer.  Arcade games were meant to be loud and create an experience.  Then place that 1 game in a room with 50+ other games and see how loud and awesome it is.

The clicky "annoyance", that trouble's most people with regards to micro-switches, is only audible when they don't play with the game volume turned up loud enough.

I believe it was some company called Nintendo who once said Play It Loud.

And then instantly apologized for it when stupid people complained.

Wow...hard to believe 2+ people can't agree on one simple thing like leaf-switches vs. micro-switches!!!  🤣  Who knew that this was such a controversial topic!?!

Personally I can deal with either, and when applicable (especially when building an Experience Controller), I try to use whatever the "original" specified controller was, chosen by the developer and/or publisher, who knew the proper way to play their game!  Its not my place to tell others how wrong they are, or how ridiculous their opinions are whey they differ from mine!  😁

And in all seriousness, I really can use either switch style, but when regarding micro-switch joysticks...I definitely prefer some of the vintage sticks from HAPP, Coin Controls, and/or MCA, or modern iL EuroJoystick 2s...a lot more than the Japanese Sanwa, and/or Seimitsu sticks.  Don't get me wrong, these sticks are fine too.  I've used them previously, but for older style games, I like the stiffer feel of the "American/Western" micro-switch joysticks, vs. the looser Japanese Candy Cabinet variants.

Whaaaa?    Next you guys will be telling me that you prefer CRTs rather than LCDs or think Vinyl is superior to CDs*...:lolblue:

*(In Reality,   it's Not quite my actual, subtle, nuanced, exacting opinion (available upon request only (for purposes of this thread(and furthering my agenda of using way too many parentheses(s))))))...It was more like what if I was one of those guys like in a Jag Forum or something who would write something and then take off with his head down as the fighting starts...Probably better if ya don't answer me.   It's just a bit.

  18. (Late to the party but...)

Like everyone else says I'd bet Famicom or specific Famiclone ...Or an NES type game made to look like a Famiclone game!   Check the size of the end (you insert) to see if it's NES or Famicom by comparing it to other carts...

It's funny I have one of those machine specific carts...It won't play in an NES or any NES clone that I own (Retro Duo for instance), but supposedly works in a Yobo Factor 5, which is itself an NES clone as far as I know.

  19. Yep!  Nothing like a little tactile feedback.

I must block it out or turn the game up because I can't remember noticing or even hearing it.   HMMMmm...  BITD I had a ColecoVision joystick (A Questar if memory serves) and it had leaf switches as did my old arcade games (Looking at my Frenzy machine right now).   And not too long ago I got a WICO Ball Top (Finally) and man that thing is stiff, and heavy, and rough to use for very long!  I'm not the Incredible Hulk after all...I know there's nostalgia, etc.,  but I much prefer microswitches for their smooth, easy, and accurate  operation.
