  1. ^  Sorry,

I just now realized, that in the course of 1134 pages,  we forgot to answer the question (?)...

    New Atari Console That Ataribox?

    And the answer is NO.

Let's put the pitchforks aside, please. Everyone here knows what the VGC is all about, his brevity, etc. You're free to use the voting mechanism as mentioned, if compelled. There are those that are vocal every chance they get, about not being into long walls of texts, yet bitch about (despite the awesome grade) abbreviated reviews such as his? So he missed something or didn't play the game all the way through. C'mon. There's enough of the 'thought police' mentality going on today. Tell me how to live, or otherwise dictate how someone should go about a review. My way or the highway. No need to carry *that* poisonous water over to this hobby, is there? I mean really... A+ or A-?

Like splitting hairs with a chainsaw.  ;)

Is it wrong that, paradoxically I agree with both of these posts 150%?

(I don't know,...Percentages are not my strong point)

OK,  I glanced at the review.  I wasn't going to.  I own the game.  I like it.  That's all I need...Not really into internet or video reviews anyway.  On one hand,  I'm happy it gave a bump in sales and that it got high marks,...On another,  I don't like seeing too much of a game in action (Don't want it spoiled when I first play it)...And on the third hand, (I don't know;  Hand quantity must also not be my strong point) That game is amazing and they added lots of extras they didn't have to that make it even better...Personally I liked the old days of seeing a glossy page in a magazine, with, in the Best cases, a high quality picture of the game and box art plus multiple screen shots...but not too many (heh)...

To sum up,  My first impression of his review is that it was good but not great...See?  I gave a review of a review, but I didn't pay attention to the whole thing...(a meta metaphor?,   some not quite surreality presented the way AVGN would do it)...

  3. Thinking about it,  hopefully mine arrives this week sometime as I'm on vacation, but if not that's OK too.   I am so happy I signed up for this club!

Even with life the way it is now (the new not normal haha)...It gives me something to look forward to.

^^ What appliance do you see when you look at the Amico Intellivision?

I see a foot massager xD

    footmassage.jpg

    footmassager2.jpg

Controllers look like Sandisk MP3 players

    sd1.jpg

    sd2.jpg

I'll tell ya I thought the Amico was definitely the Ugliest Ass console I'd ever seen,   until they announced the release of the PS5...Sony!  What in bloody Hell is That??

The thing looks like a plastic tulip met an electronic taco, while watching a weird contraption from Adam & Eve.com late at night at a bad modern art museum...(And not in the good way)

    PS5-Enhanced-Edition-Console-Hardware-sc

Now the thing about the Amico is this:

It may look like an open box foot massager bought at a flea market, but it plays retro games!  (Retro being used correctly here, for those who worry about words too much)...And

I don't know if I like the controller,  I could give two rat tails about couch co-op, and the words Family Friendly make me wanna hurl,  ...  But I want one!

I like new "old style" games, and modern versions of classics...

I don't want a PS5 because I'm not too into modern games...And I don't want whatever Atari is doing now because that's like lesser versions of no longer modern games that don't run right (allegedly)...

So for me,  a new console has to be Retro or play Classic games.

I look forward to Omni, I pre-ordered an NT Mini Noir, and I already own a Phoenix.  I'll check out the Amico and might even pick up an Evercade in the future, but I'm pretty sure I'm not Atari's target audience...

Other things I like are Games,  Quality, and Consoles that I know will exist...

Yeah, I think I do remember seeing something like that! "Lisence"... I often wonder how non-native English speakers put up with the crap that is English grammar and spelling.

This made me laugh way more than it should have for some reason...

You're super lucky or I have bad luck. Here's my 8BitDooDoo story...

My problem with 8BitDo is that I have 5 of their controllers and 4 of them are dumpster-tier. The 1 that is not dumpster-tier is the M30 2.4g, which is amazing, somehow. The other 4 are the SN30, SF30, N30 Pro 2, and the SF30 Pro. All of these 4 have terrible d-pads. I tested them in Sonic Mania, and I have difficulty making Sonic crouch instead of running to the left or right. Of the 2 controllers with analog sticks, all 4 sticks are useless since they have difficulty recentering themselves after I let go of them sometimes, and they often give me strange inputs when not touching them.

Here's a picture of my N30 Pro 2's stick calibration screen on the Switch several hours after I got it.

    Pic_0206_219.thumb.jpg.b4e3a7ee4d07d15e5faf9314db4d5e8d.jpg

I was unable to get the SF30 Pro to actually connect with the Switch for over a year after I got it, and I was only able to get it to work about 50% of the time starting several months ago. As for the SN30/SF30, I have great difficulty getting them to actually connect to the receivers on my Super Nt. Most of the time, they just sit there and blink until they fail to connect and turn off. I did find a strange fix for this, though; turn the controller on before the system and it works every time, but I still have to give it between 10~20 seconds frequently.

Yep, no more 8BitDo for me except that controller that's coming with the Nt mini, and only because there's no option to not have it, unfortunately. At least this time they actually put the buttons in the right configuration for that system.

Like I said, though, the M30 2.4g is awesome, so it's not entirely hopeless, but 4 out of 5 being bad is not exactly a good record. Hopefully it will be 4 out of 6 being bad here when that other controller comes. I'm still curious about the PC Engine mini controller, though, so if you try it, let me know!

Wow!  You have had bad luck with them!

Best to go with your experiences, then...

Not meaning to mislead of course, but a lot of what I said was based on first impressions...

Lately it seems I've had very little time for video games.  And every console, game, or joystick I buy is an investment in the idea that someday I will give them a better test and I'll get a chance to really try them out...(Soon I hope)

I better revamp my thoughts to say, my First Impressions,  were generally pretty positive with 8BITDOs...But,  I don't have any with analog sticks (even though I plan on getting an FC30 PRO), and (I could be wrong) but I think the pairing thing could be a Bluetooth issue.   I've always said Bluetooth is crap,  because it's always been a headache for me...Every time, with the sole exception being PS3 controllers that somehow just work...(and they don't require lining up blinking lights, computer keystrokes, firmware updates, or putting in the magic button combo to get something into Switch mode or whatever)...

I built a small cabinet that is designed to hold four consoles at once. It has an open back where cords can come out, and two "chambers" on each level... a larger one for the console, and a smaller one for controllers and accessories. I also made wooden covers for each chamber - so they look like drawers when it's all closed up, but they are actually more like wooden faceplates that are held in place with magnets and I can just remove them one at a time when a system is in use. It's small enough overall to go either on top of my desk or under it. There are probably some standard shelving kits that could serve the same purpose. But the main issue with something like this always comes down to cord & cable routing and dressing. It's just always a challenge to dress cables well, and then once you do, you have a whole 'nother can of worms if you ever need to move or rearrange anything, because you have to 'un-dress' all the cables and re-do them again.

Eventually, although it was decently organized, I didn't actually frequently use all four systems, and it felt kind of imposing in a weird way. So I decided that for me it was actually better to just store my consoles in boxes and then from time to intentionally decide, 'this month I'm going to hook up the Saturn and focus on those games for a while,' or 'this month I'm going to hook up the OG Xbox and play through JSRF again.' It also kind of helps because I sometimes get paralysis from too many choices.

Sir,  your ideas intrigue me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter!

  8. Not meaning to complain, but just gotta be honest...

Am I the only one who misses the chat feature that AtariAge used to have?  I mean I like to discuss video games as much as the next guy, but there's so many specialized areas in Discord...It feels like all the standard and fascinating random conversation gets lost.  I mean a discussion of one topic would seem better served as a topic on AA...Chat always seemed more like,  well a place for AtariAge fans to chat (about anything)...

Anyway, the Discord feature is nice...I just prefered the old chat for some reason.

PS I wasn't online in the early days,  Was the old chat IRC or something else?

  9. And don't forget, they sold their backers T-Shirts at a Premium!   Perhaps to prove they could ship *something* (I wonder if they got those in a lawsuit that someone was unable to pay?)...Such nice guys.

@Woulfe  I really liked your recap!

If I was to add anything it would be:

Generic FOX Business man:  Will it play PONG?

    Fred of Nutari fame: ?

Fred runs home,   looks up PONG.

Has idea for a Tweet.   What's your high score in PONG?,  A game I totally remember from my Atari 6200 days...

I'm not trying to defend Atari, but I think folks are going off the deep end here. There is 0 evidence that Atari is folding on the project because of the lawsuit, but now everyone has gone down the conspiracy theory route that they sneakily gave 500 of their friends consoles before screwing everyone else. I'm not defending Atari's handling, but it seems a bit overboard.

    I agree.

While I think this new version of "Atari" is both pitiful and awful at the same time,  I do think they'll release *something*.

For me, it was over the moment they decided to call this abomination "The VCS".  Add in the fact they are lawsuit happy while simultaneously not paying their employees (allegedly), which is reprehensible and, ...Well,  I've never wanted something to fail so hard in my life!

IMO,  if Atari were smart,  they'd compose a new update about problems with software and development, about unseen market forces and plague, and then bow out gracefully, but not before sending every one of their backers a shiny new Amico.   That would be the most win-win scenario I could realistically imagine.  The backers would get a much better conceived console, that would likely be supported;  Atari would actually make money off the venture, and the name "VCS" would not get dragged through the mud.

But I'm probably just a dreamer...

So now that I think about it, those 8BitDo PC Engine mini controllers are now available. Has anyone here actually tried them? I don't think anyone has mentioned using them yet unless there is something that I missed somewhere. They were specifically made for a mini console that not many people seem to have (at least, not many people here), so I'm not really surprised that nobody here has mentioned them yet.

I'm mostly curious to see if 8BitDo has figured out how d-pads are supposed to work yet, but I'm also curious about the general quality of the controller, especially since it seems to be mostly identical to the new controller that will come with the new version of the Nt mini.

I haven't tried them specifically,  But I've been generally quite happy with all of my other 8BITDOs*...At this point I trust them implicitly.  Maybe I'll get one in the future!

*I have'em for SNES Classic, Super NT (2 kinds), MEGA SG, and a wireless adapter for the PS1 Classic...Plus they work on the original consoles...They're Awesome! (Give or take the weirdities of BlueTooth, of course).

Yeah, this one has the best menu of the mini consoles that I have (Famicom, MD, PC Engine) in terms of aesthetics. MD is the fastest to navigate by far, though. I like the inserting of the card and how it shows the CR-ROM2 starting to spin.

I did notice one weird thing the other day after watching Joe's review. If you set the system language to English and then set the screen to use the PC Engine GT bezel and stay in the screen options menu, look at the bottom of the screen where it shows you what the buttons do. Next to the II button it says Backl instead of Back. As far as I know, this only happens on this one screen, only while the PC Engine GT bezel is equipped, and only in English. I left mine in Japanese, so I never noticed it before!

Sometimes ya just want to go Backl instead of Forwardl  😰

  14. Food Fight -  I saw it in the arcade, thought it was a Blast!

When the arcade (I think it was Le Mans) sold some games to make room for more, my friend bought Food Fight.  I'm pretty sure at this point I had a Defender cab in my room, and my friend wanted to trade for that.  I believe I ended up sweetening the deal with some more money, but he threw in a mini TV also.  I got the Food Fight, and this little handheld TV that had a big antenna coming off of it, but more importantly it had inputs,  which I was able to access after buying some Radio Shack adapters.  I remember blowing everyone's mind by hooking my ColecoVision up to this little TV (I'd guess a little over 2 inch diagonal)...I think with a game in color on that little screen, so we saw a glimpse of the future,  at least 2 years before the Game Boy or Game Gear came out...

Anyhow, I owned that Food Fight for years, sometimes having it in a local pizza place, and an auction's game room, sometimes setting it so the player could select any level (even Level 250 with a ton of extra guys!) and I only sold it when I really needed cash about 3 years ago...

I received my PC Engine Mini last night! So yeah, that was incredibly fast shipping from Japan.

I  received my Turbografx Mini Yesterday, too, also from Japan!.  I'm definitely amazed at their shipping speed, especially as I have some eBay items that are taking forever (or they never shipped, because eBay can't seem to tell when auctions are fake anymore (that may be my new thread if I ever get around to it)...Anyhow I haven't had any time to crack it open, but at least the box is in my possession ;)

I'll probably treat it mostly as a reward for catching up on my work when I'm on vacation from my (main) job in a couple of days...

In theory, yes. In practice -- probably not. Unless Atari has very incompetent legal counsel, there would be separate entities (i.e. shell companies) created for development and production. Tin Giant may have a claim against the development company, which has no assets to seize. The production company would be a completely different corporation. This analysis ignores real and important issues like different jurisdictions and the costs to have a bailiff seize and store the assets.

Assuming that Tin Giant does go the route of seizing the finished Atari Boxes, then what? Tin Giant is not in the retail business, and so they would have to make arrangements to sell the Boxes -- presumably through a liquidator. There would be a great deal of time and effort expended to realise only a small fraction of the money that they are owed.

There is a famous story about a local University Professor who successfully sued a publisher for copyright infringement (they had used his work in a book without permission). The only assets of the defunct publisher was the unsold book, of which he received almost the complete print run. He had to pay to store these books (and, presumably, eventually dispose of them). He "won" his lawsuit, but he ultimately lost money.

Let's hope that doesn't happen here.  I'm a big fan of Karma.

  17. Ya know,  I've always enjoyed a good game of Galaxian!   Whether arcade, Atari, Famicom etc.    Just a fun game to pick up and play, and I tend to associate it with 80's Arcades (this is a good thing I assure you.)...   I can't even remember where I first got it for the Famicom, prolly in a big lot of games where half of them were crappy baseball  games, and it's certainly on every other multicart I ever bought haha...

As for Super Pitfall, I've never played it.   (I can certainly try out the ROM on my Everdrive at any time though.)  I have an NES copy of it that came in a game lot and when I tried to play it even after a brisk cleaning, I could not get it to work...

Holy Cow!  I watched that page load slowly on my little netbook,  and at first I'm thinking, Oh it's an old school GBA, no biggie there...Then I saw the price!  WHAAAAAAAA????!

    And NO RETURNS!    LOL

What I think happened was someone got tired during that listing or perhaps was looking at a list of things they were listing and they wrote down 2 prices in a row, without proofreading.

Otherwise, my working GBA with a few games (and a battery cover) is gonna be sold soon so I can buy a new car or retire!

  19. Also,

I got Tower Toppler for Atari 7800 (NIB).  It arrived in great shape even with just a padded envelope and some cardboard, because, and this is important, the seller put it in a Box Protector, which did its job very well!

And a cheap Chinese MP3 player that is really kind of a neat one (Just in case all my SONYs and Back up SONYs have dead batteries or something while I mow a bigass lawn).  I collect these from time to time.

Plus 4 different True Blues filled with PlayStation games for the PS Classic!  The only one I'm missing is the Fight Pack cuz it's just fighters and it's not 1992 anymore  (I haven't been jazzed for fighters for a long time), Well and the Genesis/MD pack cuz I think I've already got all those on Retro Arch (7,000+ Games).

And a Converter to make the Wii output HDMI.
