I seem to remember my bowling alley getting this one back then. I never really liked this game back then or today. It's good for one play and then move on to something else.

^My Exact thoughts on Kangaroo!  I tried to play it once;  Probably didn't know what I was doing and did not enjoy it, despite liking the graphics...And yes, maybe if it had better controls...

I never saw Pioneer Balloon,... and Crazy Climber,  well I only played it a few times, but it was IIRC, the first full size cab a friend of mine bought.  I helped him move it once and it was extremely heavy for its size as I recall...

  2. I've found that HORI generally makes good stuff  (I love their PS2 arcade sticks) and of course, microswitches rule!

FWIW,  I have one of these for my Turbografx and I like it quite a bit.  Pretty sure I have a cable adapter to allow its use on my PC Engine DUO R too.  I can't remember if I've specifically tried it, but no reason it shouldn't work...

  3. Quick question,  Have you ever played Ultimate Qix (Sega Genesis), Volfied, or Neo Qix (All the same game, give or take which port you play)?

It's like playing Arkanoid instead of Breakout.  I have a hard time going back to regular old Qix now.

    Sorry to be off topic.

    Just wondered...

  4. I meant if you already have a PC Engine, but buy a Turbografx, you could use the adapter to play PCE games on your Turbografx...I have one of those so called "Barney" Adapters (Also called a WH-301 Game Converter), which are usually purple like Barney the Dinosaur, except mine is brown.  It's kind of funny, on the box it shows a pinkish purple adapter allowing you to play Turbografx games on a PC Engine, but the product literally does the opposite.  I think they just used one box for all of their products. 😖

Yep, I got to try the GT a few months ago in a store and I found that the screen is actually better than the Nomad's. As for CD vs HuCARD, it's up to personal preference, but over 50% of the PC Engine library is on CD, so that's the biggest negative of the GT compared to the Nomad. Still, the HuCARD library is still solid and has lots of great games.

I'd rather smash my Super Famicom with a hammer than get rid of my PC Engine. That's not to say the SFC is bad at all, but after wanting to get the SNES for 20 years and then finally getting one, I find that I just don't care about it much at all so it sits over in the corner with a stack of Genesis and Mega Drive games piled on top. It does have the best game ever made, though. (Super Metroid)

I actually want to get a TurboGrafx-16 eventually. I finally saw one in person for the first time at Tokyo Game Show last year and they are much nicer looking in person than in pictures on the internet. They are not cheap, though, and since HuCARDs are region locked, I would have to import games from the USA. There are apparently only 138 US TurboGrafx-16 games, as well, which is pretty sad compared to the almost 700 games Japan got. Still, I'd like to get one some day if I can since they are really cool systems!

Also,  You can buy an adapter to play PC Engine games on it, though they may not be cheap at this point.  Also you can get a Turbo Everdrive, which has a switch, to use it for Turbografx or PC Engine.

Need a relaxing woodgrain foot bath, and the sound of some running water and other ambient noises and they could open a retro themed spa to go with their hotels.

Am I the only one who thinks that all of that sounds Way Cooler than anything Atari would actually come up with?

  7. Turbografx 16.

While the PC Engine was huge in Japan, The American counterpart practically disappeared from the landscape as the SNES VS Genesis Wars played out.  I do remember some friends having them...And sure there is some reverence for it now, but not enough love when it existed on store shelves.  I, too, was late to the party on this one, getting one about 15 years ago...But I now see it as a nice link in the chain from 8 bit to 16 bit eras, and if anything, in my mind, it's right up there with SNES and Genesis.  Maybe not equal, but different in a good way.

Also the Coleco ADAM.   BassGuitari already nailed it so I'll just say I agree with him on it.

GameSlop is closing? Nooooo!!! I need my overpriced germ-covered scratched up game discs!!!!!!!!

I, too, am gonna need a place to buy such discs, but Only if the box is dented in a least 3 spots, the cover is backwards, the artwork is missing, the plastic is torn off, the manual is gone, the hand written game title is misspelled, and there are at least 4 stickers on the box, at least one of which should say "Pre-Owned" or "Used", while the rest are different prices.

    Hell Yeah!!

And if I'm being totally honest here,   Most of my Tacos started life as Burritos...Then, when I went to close them and realized I'd overfilled them,...I thought,   That's OK!    NOW They're TACOS!!

  10. I agree with most of what everyone else says here.  For me, BITD, this game was Mind-Blowing!  It became almost an obsession for me and my friend;  We also were hand drawing maps to it.  We kept playing and playing it, in the way you would later do with NES games.  But, back then we played games, we didn't beat games...And it is an easy game to get lost in (I mean this figuratively and literally), which was a fairly rare experience back in those days.  Truth is, I never made it past that second part.  I think I heard it was 3 parts.  But for some reason at some point, we put it away and just never went back to it.

To this day I haven't gone back to it, but my memories of it are very fond.  It was one of my Favorite Supercharger games ever!  I kind of feel like if you missed it back in the day, you may have missed it.  Few people have the patience nowadays...When was the last time you hand made a map for anything?  I also imagine people playing the ROM for a small bit of time, and then writing it off without getting it.  But when it was a game you bought and one of the (comparatively) few games you owned, you not only put in the time,  you loved every minute of it.  Fun game!

I'll be sure to letcha know what I think of it! And yeah, the Mega SD can run Sega CD .bin & .cue sets all on it's own but for 32X games you do still need the original 32X hardware to run them. Unfortunately at the moment the only way to do that on the Mega SG is with an Analogue DAC outputting to a CRT TV, so I'll still be using my old Genesis Model 2 + Sega CD Model 2 + 32X setup to play 32X games.

Right now the big debate for me is whether to stick with the stock firmware for the Mega SG or flash Smokemonster's jailbreak firmware to it. Since I've got a Mega SD on the way it seems redundant to use custom firmware that let's you run Genesis & Master System games off an SD card on the Mega SG, but the jailbreak firmware does add both ColecoVision and Game Gear cores to the system and I do loves me some ColecoVision!

Oh..It's  a shame ya have to have Sega's crappy 32X hardware which I don't trust at all since I once bought one brand new and it was a chintzy POS that didn't work so I returned it for PlayStation games....Sorry to keep telling that story...Maybe someday we'll have a way to play 32X without using that...

Thanks to the income from selling my original PlayStation collection, I finally did it. Today I put down the money for the ultimate modern Sega Genesis / Mega Drive setup that I've been dreaming of, and it was by far the most costly gaming purchase I've ever made in my entire life. $559.75 later...

I'm with ya every step of the way except I go for Hyperkin controllers not Retro Bit,  but that's me.   And I have an Everdrive but not a Mega SD.    That's the one that'll do Sega CD right?   Wait ...AND 32X???  (Want it want it want it!).   You'll have to let me know what you think of it when it all comes together...

    What a butt-kissing shill.

Around 0:20 you can hear someone yelling an f-bomb.

Unfortunately he stopped short of asking The Question...He said (something to the effect of) Are These Games specific to this console?  IMO, What he Needed to say is "What Games ARE specific to this console?"

The Silence would have been deafening.

  14. I can only speak for myself...And sometimes I hate to weigh in, because everybody's experience is different.  In the old days and now, with a modded ColecoVision, I have an issue where I sometimes get garbled graphics unless I put some weight on the power supply cable.  And what I've just described is with the old original console,   ...I've had better luck with my ADAM, but only for Carts, as ADAM games on tape, excuse me Digital Data Packs,  are now a risky proposition.  Last time I played ADAM Zaxxon, my tape snapped and died, but I digress.  And emulators on computers, in my mind are always a pain in some way or another,...So then along comes the Phoenix.   In many ways, there are less issues here than with the original consoles.

On One of my TVs,  Everything is pretty much flawless.  I consider the Atari core a bit wonky in the way the menu is set up, but, once playing,  it looks great on my HDTV!  The Coleco side is Amazing!!!!  The Phoenix is one of my Favorite Consoles in Life!

Now, on my other TV, it has that thing where sometimes,  if playing ROMs, but not carts if memory serves, you may have to plug/unplug the HDMI when you switch a game.  I haven't tried a switch between the console and the set, but I bet it would work fine.  I agree it seems like something that could be ironed out.  I have a cable (which I may need to locate) that has 3 HDMI inputs and one output with selector buttons and I'll bet that will fix everything, but I haven't had the time to try it out.  Sorry about that, I haven't had much extra time, in life lately...

It matters I suppose if you leave your consoles plugged in, or constantly change them, or move them around to various TVs in your house.  I hope this comment makes sense.  If you leave it hooked up to a certain TV,  you'd hope that's the TV that works perfectly.  Otherwise you might want to buy a switch for the HDMI.   OTOH, if you move it around and have it in front of the set, or on the side somewhere, it's no big deal to unplug/plug in an HDMI cable if it needs it.

So, personally I LOVE The Phoenix!  Is it Perfect?  Maybe not, but almost.  I've had issues with original hardware, issues with emulators (and those aren't even on a TV or with original controllers anyway), and minor issues with the Phoenix.  The Phoenix looks sharp as Hell on the screen and runs Atari and Coleco ROMs, plus SGM and Homebrews all in one spot, and displays on a TV.  I prefer it over all other options, even over original hardware in most instances.  I wholeheartedly recommend it, but if it doesn't suit you, then go a different route.

  15. @roots.genoaOh...I just noticed the FREXIT (above)...(Saying no more, I assure you).

I'm glad ColecoJoe posted Werner's review, so I could read it.

Strangely, even with nothing but the rosiest of colored glasses, his viewpoint was kind of interesting.  And,   whether blaming The Virus or not, even he now questions delivery dates, etc.

  16. I Love me some Pinball!

I usually like crazy, evil ragers like Jaki Crush on Super Famicom (Sequel to Devil's Crush on Turbografx (Dragon's Fury on Genesis) so you know it's Awesome), but honestly to just relax with a nice game of chill, ambient pinball, I Totally recommend Super Pinball Behind The Mask on SNES.  The music and style are so relaxing, it's like there's no pressure...I get calm just thinking about it haha...

Another seriously No Pressure game is Aquanaut's Holiday on Play Station, though most people don't get it....As I recall, you are piloting a sub around the ocean looking at fish and any other weird thing that pops up...

  17. Looks like some of the backers are getting tired of all the "good news"...

I dare say this project was All Bark And No Bite from the get-go.   Only in this case,  the dog is a toothless teacup poodle with laryngitis behind an 8 foot fence and you're walking 2 blocks away in the opposite direction while wearing a Walkman...
