  1. Nothing on sale at all. All the Dollar Generals in my area only stock the Sega stuff. The manager at one store I went to said a lot of people were asking about those. I said screw it and picked my Flashback at Target for $49.99 USD. And Black Friday sales are a crap shoot whether any stock remains after the lines are gone...

I don't know about the actual stores, as I said we don't have any...But that link works to buy online if anyone is interested. Shipping (for me anyway) was about $7...So it'd be $35 if someone is looking...

  2. I think the Atari Portable is was more fun than yet another TV console, plus the SD card opens up hundreds of other things to play, but maybe that's just me and my mostly-no-TV lifestyle.

Oh, I'm definitely looking forward to the Portable! Mine still hasn't shown up yet... :( But I'm thinking tomorrow maybe :) We had 63 degree weather today, but Thursday when the Portable was supposed to be delivered (according to the tracking number), we had a snowstorm that shut down 2 Interstates...

  3. Hey all,

I just got an email from Dollar General and from 11-20 to 11-23...Atari Flashback 7 is on sale $28 and available online.

We don't have Dollar General around here, just Family Dollar and Dollar Tree (Which wouldn't count unless something sells for $1 haha)...But I think I bought my Coleco FB from them and ended up on their mailing list...I'm trying to save every penny right now, but even I'm pretty tempted at $28....Maybe I'll throw one on the old credit card. :)

  4. Hopefully somebody gets one of these unit right someday. There's so much potential to be had with a unit like this. I guess they just want it on the shelves so when people go to get the NES mini and it's sold out they can buy this instead.

Probably not their initial intent...But at this point I'm sure they'll take what they can get.

Also who would ever design a set of PCBs that have so many holes for screws to pass through? It looks awful. They should have just placed a screw on each corner, they have four little feet so why not?. I could swear they designed the shell first and the PCBs around it.

AKA The Coleco Chameleon approach... :-D

  6. Negative. I just tested this. The console automatically outputs HDMI as long as you have an HDMI cable plugged and connected to a display.

Unplug the HDMI cable or turn off the external display, and the console Immediately reverts to composite output. So while you can hotswap displays while powered on, you cannot simultaneously output to both standard definition and HD displays.

    Thanks Stardust!

    I was just curious...

  7. Usually I don't let reviews change my opinion very much...When it comes to games, for instance, my tastes vary wildly, especially compared to the average reviewer who may not appreciate the effort or originality of certain games...

BUT, that said I gotta be honest...After reading things like this (found this in a different thread and can't remember if it's been here or not):

    http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2016/11/hardware_review_retro-bit_generations

My enthusiasm has waned on this...Many times over I seem to hear that the emulation is off, the speed, the sound, frame rates, and so forth...And I Know that it's possible to do this better,...Not so much from experience (as my emu experience is limited, not non-existent but limited). So I figure if even a bonehead like me knows this can be done better, the Retro-Bit guys should know better and they shouldn't have been so sloppy here. I even like their Retro-Duo, despite it also having a host of little problems it shouldn't have...

I need to save my money anyway, but they weren't supposed to make it easy on me!

Maybe 3-5 years from now I'll find a Retro-Bit Generations floating atop a pile of black plastic items, sticky A/V cables, Genesis sports games, and broken Gamecube controllers in a lonely pawn shop somewhere. It'll be next to that Corvette shaped VHS tape rewinder...And I'll offer them $5, Cash! American, for it...And they'll be tired of looking at it and say, "Take it before we change our minds..."

Pretty neat how these old electronics continue to work after 30-40 years. Not like the shit they've been making for the past 10 years.

Anyhow. The fat lady next door taught me how to play chess. And shortly thereafter I got the VCS version and loved it. Before that I had a Fidelity Chess Challenger, though at that time I didn't know how to play. I ended up taking it apart and making show shoes from the shell halves and god knows what I did with the electronics. Probably connected it to the AC mains directly like I did so many things back then.

You must really have enjoyed releasing the magic blue smoke. Was it more puff 'n' smoke, or a literal flash bang from the watt energies involved? You're lucky you didn't electrocute yourself or burn the house down... :skull:

There were a few times I got knocked out and didn't know what happened. But it was everything you could imagine. And more. It was glorious! I even seem to recall the smoke being multi-colored. But there never was a strong correlation between color of the smoke and the parts it came out of.

Somehow I'm reminded of me with my chemistry set...Back in the day I mean.

Or perhaps closer would be my lab partner in Electronics class in high school...He grabbed this little tiny light bulb, barely bigger than a pin head and pulled the wires leading off of it apart so he could very quickly jam it into the wall outlet, where it promptly exploded and took power out for our wing of the school! The teacher of our class ran to reset the breaker, then came back, headed right for us and much yelling ensued...I probably didn't help as I mockingly repeated what the teacher was saying demanding to know what he did...LOL

  9. So Kosmic (or anyone else who has one and wants to answer),

If you've tried it, do the HDMI and A/V outputs BOTH work at the same time? I guess specifically what I'd like to know is can I hook this up to a stereo (using audio from A/V) and use HDMI for the video on a modern TV?

  10. Pulsar by Sega/Gremlin - it's a really fun game, and I think the 7800 could improve upon the original.

    I so agree on Pulsar!

It's really been forever, but I remember playing this in an arcade that was in the back of our local K-Mart. They put in a really nice little game room with black carpet and its own ceiling, and it was kept dark like an arcade should be...

  11. (I haven't had a chance to see the whole video above so apologies if it answers some questions)

I know people have said there are arcade games on here, but, I see the games list and I keep thinking home versions...For example Holy Diver, Image Fight, Exerion, Exed Exes, SonSon, Zippy Race, Anything with the word Commando are probably Famicom/NES and look at all the Genesis/MD and SNES/SFC on the list...

Hate to say it, (and I'd like to be wrong)...But could it be that Retro-Bit is throwing around the word "Arcade" here?

They might be referring to the type of game and not the platform...

If anyone gets one, I'd advise them to look at the demo screens and look for the words "Insert Coin" as opposed to the Famicom/NES/MD/SFC etc. demo screens...

  12. Oh, your copy of the Generations has already arrived? I have a partial accounting done for what games on it are what platform in this post and a handful more in this post of the Generations thread--at least based on the review copies' game list. That's only about 65% done, though, so get your stardust into that thread and help finish up! :)

But first, some specific questions about your unit (feel free to answer in the Generations thread instead of here):

    - Does your unit have Alfred Chicken games in it? Supposedly, the final consumer product does not have those three titles among the contents--supposedly.

    - Does the front of your system's box say "90" in the red starburst or "100"?

    - Which game logos on the box are stickers?

    - Have you encountered any inconsistent game speeds? In particular, a YouTube review demonstrated significant speed swings in Super R-Type and Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts, in which the "normal" speed was also too fast.

    onmode-ky

I wondered about this too! And I do feel that at least a handful of people who were going to buy a Nintendo Mini (probably for themselves or to play, not as a gift) will buy this instead or in the meantime...What I really wondered, given how many home versions of these games exist, is: Are there actual arcade games on here?

I keep thinking Retro-Bit may be throwing around the word "Arcade" to describe a type of game as opposed to the version (or platform) of the game. The dead giveaway would usually be the words "Insert Coin" in the demo mode as opposed to the usual Famicom demo mode or SNES, Genesis etc...

    He UPPED it to $10,000

    What a f-nut

I declined with a message saying that he's insane, and I'll get one when Nintendo floods the market with these.

Should make for hilarious commentary on your podcast...

  13. We only had Circuit City...

Best Buy was 45 miles away...

But it was funny... Best Buy, in the old days, had an anime section that was a whole aisle long, stocked to the gills, Circuit City had "Spirited Away" next to all their sci-fi DVDs in their section marked "Anime/Sci-Fi". I asked an employee why they only had one anime DVD in their whole "anime" section and her response was, "What's anime?" ..

To be fair, the last time I was in a Best Buy, their entire anime section was less than 4 shelves, about one 16th of its previous size...And so was their whole movie section...

And Circuit City did not care what you were buying as long as they could try and sell you an extended warranty on it...That's a nice extension cord ya got there...Shame if something were to happen to it...

On the plus side you could sign up for a Circuit City card, get $20 credit...Then cancel and do it again haha!

OK Wait I'm not completely off topic yet...LOL...Flashbacks might have been carried by Circuit City if they were still around :)

In Canadian dollars, that would cost about $10,000.

Seriously though, why would I want to dick around with finding a console, finding games, paying out the ass, then figuring out how to connect it to my flatscreen, make sure everything works, fix blinking lights, clean carts, store carts, store the console, and store the accessories; when I could just pay 80 maple syrup dollars and get a neat little console that connects to my TV via HDMI, looks cute, and just works. Plus I get the modern benefit of save-states, different display modes, and links to the manuals which I can read on my phone. To me it's a no-brainer, especially because I'm trying to reduce the amount of shit I don't use in my house not add to it.

This thing ain't for the purists. This thing is for people like me who fondly remember these games, but don't want to empty their wallet and clutter their home to enjoy them on the big screen.

You make a good point! But I think collectors will want them, too. I know this product will appeal to casual gamers...But it also appealed to me...Even if it's in addition to old hardware, stacks of carts, multi-carts, repros, Famicoms, clone systems, handhelds, My Sharp Twins, Fami games, Famiclone games, Famiclones,...etc.

It's funny I almost forget that some people want one to replace the old stuff...Not add to it.
