2017 Flashback FAQ and Speculation Thread
GoldLeader replied to Flojomojo's topic in AtGames Flashback and Portable Consoles
I look forward to what comes next from AtGames... Although this may not be the thread for it, I thought I'd mention one thing in what seems to be a RetroN 5 Vs. Retro Freak argument...(As both are AtGames competitors). I know my experience may be the opposite of everything you've heard, but I'd like it on record that I bought both a RetroN 5 and a Retro Freak. The RetroN 5 has performed flawlessly with no issues at all other than the normal issues associated with emulation, and The Retro Freak was Broken right out of the box...I got a title screen and nothing else and soon the title screen disappeared too. I got a refund and never looked back. I always figured I got a lemon and may someday give them another chance (Or I might look into getting a RetroEngine Sigma)... -
BITD No...As we were all younger. These days, It's a beautiful luxury if they do! I know of many Barcades, but I also know of arcades, like in the old days...I prefer ones with beer nowadays!

I'm pretty sure I'm not that great at most games compared to you guys, but I'd probably say Yars' Revenge, Pitfall, Tron Deadly Discs, and Dark Cavern. I'm not including games that are nearly infinite (Laser Blast or Asteroids)...

Exactly when did arcades die in the USA?
GoldLeader replied to Flojomojo's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I remember lots of arcades doing really well after fighting games took over...Even as many of our darkened and seedy '80s arcades had disappeared...One of my friends bought a Mortal Kombat II machine and put it in a pool hall/arcade, where he'd put post it notes on the side of the machine claiming it was possible to find Pat Morita from Karate Kid as a hidden character...LOL To me it just felt like instead of classic video games (or genres), There were way more Mortal Kombat Machines and Street Fighter IIs of every stripe,...More Neo Geo cabs and stuff like Primal Rage...And later the 3D fighting games, which around here came with remodels to make arcades look more "family friendly", which really sucked... Then again (at the opposite end of the spectrum) in the 80's there was one arcade here called "Video Village"; A darkened place with loud heavy metal playing, where the kids would smoke pot in the back and there were often "lookouts" posted watching the doors that would either let kids know if their parents pulled up, or run out to the car and "graciously" offer to go in and get their kid so they could keep the car running... -

That's true enough,... For me though Duck Hunt still seems cartoony enough and "video gamey"; It always seemed rather lighthearted. It's not like the ducks fall in a pool of blood and feathers...Whereas the others have grown in realism enough to make me not interested... Actually as a kid, I once petted a "wild" antelope...So would never be interested in hunting them, unlike many of my relatives. It was at my cousin's house. They lived out in the country and one young antelope stayed behind and the herd moved on I guess, but this little guy stayed in my cousin's yard. I was there on Christmas for a family dinner and they opened the door and called the antelope, IIRC they named him "Andy", and he came into the house...It was as if he went up to everyone to say hello and then kind of skittishly zipped back outside... -

Wow! Not a lot I could say here that hasn't been already said better... I agree with everyone who said the PS1 and Dreamcast eras...Somewhere in there lies the death of arcades. Starting with Playstation (look at the NAMCO Museum games, for example), they really were able to bring the arcade home, a dream we'd been chasing since Atari and Coleco. And after they flat lined, they were reborn like a Phoenix in the ashes, as Barcades. For the record I see arcades as having 3 timeframes...(These are my own view of the world, not talking History). 1980-83: This was the Heyday of classic arcades! They ruled and they were everywhere! There was an arcade tent with every traveling carnival, fair, or circus too...And Every Mini Mart had a game in back and every restaurant had one or two machines in front...You want to play Mr. Do!, Pac-Man, or Space Firebird while you wait for your pancakes? No problem! The drawback to these times came when you realized arcades kept getting rid of old games to make way for new ones....First Rip Off's gone, then no more Star Castle, Now Astro Blaster has disappeared! Pretty soon you could barely find a working Asteroids game! 1983-88: Still had a great arcade presence....I thought it was cool to see some NES home versions of many games...We went to arcades to see new games and gave up being hurt when they replaced old games with new ones, and myself and certain friends began collecting arcade machines... After '88: You had the rise of fighting games which really helped for a while and then came the idea that arcades in malls needed to put in skee ball and crane games, (and later, giant cell phone looking games) and turn up fluorescent lighting that hurt the eyes of us poor old video game vampires looking for darkness...At this point arcades were getting their interior decorating tips from Insane Asylums and remodeled Taco Bells (You know the ones...Where they took out the plants, earth tones and all atmosphere...and made everything hospital colors)...I'd say the "brightness" caused Dark Times... -

Naww Them suckers was Evil! Each one of them was just waiting for the right time to morph into a dragon (Like in ADVENTURE) and eat your ass.. Besides I was only shooting them to entertain the dog... -
My prediction is that the Szechuan Teriyaki sauce for McNuggets will return (Probably strategically timed)...The only question is Who will be on the box? Mulan or Rick & Morty?
-
Eh, it's doubtful Rick and Morty will be a part of the promotion. Unless McDonald's has suddenly warmed up to little blue murderers and sex offender jelly beans.

If only Kellogg's would bring back milk chocolate Pop Tarts with the graham cracker chocolate chip crust! That's my one armed man!

OK so suddenly I'm having ideas for Great Games... Animals With Rifles!! I mean if it was a war and the Animals had guns too and ideally walked on two legs and looked weird...And then if you could choose to be human or animal...That would make a great game! Someone get on that ...And remember you owe me a beer! Second idea: A sadistic dentist who loves causing pain...Maybe he's German and named Mr. Teethenhurter (I don't know)...No idea what gameplay would be but feel free anyone to use those ideas (and owe me a beer!)... All Right I'll stop hijacking this thread (though I may ..have been on topic...kind of?)... -

Or maybe I'll just make a mention of a Minnesota dentist whose first instinct when seeing a beautiful lion is to kill it and leave it at that ...Animal with a rifle indeed. -

Yeah like if that wildebeest had bloody Fangs...And suddenly stood up on 2 legs and sprouted giant bat wings...pointed to you with fierce claws (maybe even flipping you off...) I'd shoot that! I'm not gonna blow away a chubby critter just crossing a river, minding it's own business...What kind of Animal would that make me? -
Brazilian system looks like 7800/NES hybrid

Hey it just sold!! Yeah The Phantom certainly looks to be of better build quality than most chintzy, lightweight Chinese Famiclones I've seen (and often collect)...And I actually didn't think $150 was outrageous...But the $40 shipping, while realistic, raised the price too high IMO... -

I want them both! Guess it's a good thing I'm low on money right now or I'd be adding to the collection ...LOL -

FWIW, Not unlike Target, our local Wal-Marts do pretty good with regard to giving them to people in line...I knew by 10PM that I was one of 6 people getting one @ Midnight on launch day... I was at Wal-Mart yesterday and I saw the manager guy that sold them to us (Easily identified as he has tattoos and I think he's in a local death metal band), and I asked him about the stock of Minis and he said they only ever got in 2 more since launch. I should have asked him if he meant 2 units or 2 more shipments. Either way Nintendo screwed the pooch on this one. My thought on resellers is that I still don't mind someone getting lucky and making a few bucks by selling one (ONE!) on ebay...But it is very annoying when you see a pyramid of them in someone's living room...And I still respect any retailer who puts a quantity limit of one, or a captcha or something, for online sales to give us all a chance... -

Good call. Talk about thinking outside the box! (Literally!) Tunnels & Trolls would have been huge! It seemed to reach proportions of Myth and Legend. We all saw it on our Colecovision box,...If Only it Existed! Based on the graphics and the idea of it for the time...If it had happened to exist on store shelves one day, myself and any of my friends would have bought it in a heartbeat! -

Forum loading issues - slow / repeated server timeouts?
GoldLeader replied to spookt's topic in Site and Forum Feedback
I've noticed it happening a lot more lately too...And specifically about 10 or 15 minutes before and sometimes after 2AM (Or thereabouts, Mountain Time Zone)...Just going off of my memory here, and I noticed other people saw similar times. -
In 1998 they had this promotion for the Disney film Mulan, where they created a new sauce for the McNuggets called Szechuan sauce...
-
I wonder if it was a fake AND they wanted to test the waters. Also their announcement of it as a fake seems so miniscule...Like they're answering one question from one guy...Hmmm Should have known...I suppose the Event will be when some company gives out some real info and happens to do it on April 1st...That's what I want to happen....Something cool and retro to get a release and be announced on April 1st ....Especially something so cool Everyone assumes it's a prank.

I just had one of the best meals of my Life! The secret was to get up and eat nothing...Then later go to a heavy metal concert, drink with friends before and after...Then go grocery shopping, then eat Breakfast at 2:30 AM!

I had a chili burger -Technically veggie burger covered with veggie chili, with cheese tomatoes, onions, shredded lettuce and a dab of sour cream on top...It was Epic!

That seems really cool! I hope it really plays them, rather than emulating them...(Not sure why it would, but if they re-used the emulator from the RetroN 5, I could see it happening). I think the first thing I'd do would be to plug in Wario Blast and see if it plays correctly or if the bombs have no explosion sound like on RetroN 5...
