Nintendo Classic Mini announced
GoldLeader replied to Atariboy's topic in Classic Console Discussion
No argument there. I just wondered what the numbers were. All of the articles I found simply said 196,000 in the U.S. in November. Some of the articles were from December and I'm guessing they got the numbers from a Nintendo (Earnings) report...Sources like CNBC and Forbes... It just made me curious... -

1.5 Million "Worldwide"...To me that kind of begs the question, "How many did they sell in the U.S.?" I mean our Wal-Mart got 6! And I think I heard Target got 12. I don't know the numbers for K-Mart or Gamestop, etc. If we were to compare this to the chaos of the Playstation 2 launch, which was the first time I remember seeing a whole bunch of people waiting outside in freezing temperatures overnight; For PS2s: our Wal Mart got 25 units, Target got 36, and Circuit City got 28 and KayBee Toys got 12 if memory serves. And those were considered quite rare at the time... -

I have one of those TV Boys. It only works through RF and you have to put it on a high channel number (which I can't remember at the moment)...At first I thought it was broken, but it worked once I got the right channel. I haven't had this out of my closet in years... -
I think it's safe to say that I am a FRENZY Superfan! While I liked BERZERK in the arcade, I really did; Along came FRENZY and in my humble opinion just blew it away! The best part of BERZERK was that it plays like a plot from a sci-fi horror movie where nothing is safe, But when you first experience FRENZY, BERZERK feels more like a game of "Tag" on the schoolyard playground... FRENZY is the ultimate Robot Maze Shooter! Now you are able to hide against the maze walls like you always wanted to do in BERZERK but couldn't, As the BERZERK walls are electrified...And with 2 (Technically more) kinds of walls, you can now bank your shots, you can make your own entrances and exits, you can shoot through walls, and you can employ strategy like never before. I do absolutely recommend buying all home versions of the game...Well, Both games. But while I like All home versions of FRENZY, they all feel sluggish compared to the actual Arcade game. It often makes it seem that home versions of BERZERK are the superior game. Also I do have a MAME version of FRENZY in a bartop Multicade, but that is also Not the same. I told my friend I thought maybe the computer powering the system was too slow and he told me he thought maybe I had an earlier version of MAME. Although it is a subtle difference, once the game begins, the audio is delayed compared to the action onscreen and the Brilliant death sound (kind of a crisp, electrocution "ZZZZZAAPP!"), is missing Entirely. I assume this has been corrected in newer versions of MAME, but I don't know that for sure... I think I'll include a quick pic of my kitchen...Cheers!

You know one I'd consider these days...Is that Atari video pinball game from a long time ago (1978)... I used to always wish I could play that and went almost my whole life without ever seeing it... And then last year I saw it in a Denver arcade (Hyperspace) and then all of a sudden I saw it here in town (Cheyenne, WY) at a place called Flippers! So... Twice in one year!

Coleco Chameleon .... hardware speculations?
GoldLeader replied to phoenixdownita's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I remember I saw one of those fake Wii looking systems in this mail order catalog, I'm assuming there are more than one type out there, and I bought it (I'm thinking it was $40 or less) . When it arrived I gave it a spin and it was mostly terrible. It had a lot of games and they all looked 16 bit style but were just kind of pick up and play kind of deals; Most had one level that sped up until the game ended....It was very casual and mostly awful (But some were kind of fun), with very cheap, chintzy controllers (they were like very cut rate Genesis controllers)....I honestly preferred Chinese famiclone controllers over these! I didn't know what to do with it and I didn't want to sell it on ebay because I thought it was awful, so I packed it up (like new because I only played it once) and I took it to work and put it in the bin for toys for underprivileged children, which comes out every year at Christmas. I kept thinking maybe a young kid might actually like it, before getting a real system...But I was also worried that a kid might see the box and get his/her hopes up it was a Wii...At least it would maybe get some use, I figured... -

Anyone see Jimmy Fallon tonight? As a guest, he had a 12 year old kid on the show who gives "emotional advice" for $2 on a subway platform (Kind of like cheap therapy instead of a lemonade stand, and he's near a subway instead of in a yard...Also kind of like Lucy from Peanuts). Anyway he was kind of trying to see what the kid likes, and said, "I heard you're into video games, and you wanted one of those Classic Nintendos ..." At this point, it kind of backfired when the kid said, "My Dad really wants one". So Fallon, who had quite a look on his face, said, "Well,...Give this to your Dad, I guess" and gave him a Nintendo Mini with a big bow on it! -
Coleco Chameleon .... hardware speculations?

My story is a lot more like yours....BITD if you liked video games you knew about ColecoVision! We'd followed it since they showed the prototype in magazines. And we were all hard at work convincing our parents we needed one. Because back then a new console was also a new idea. We all had Ataris,...I only knew one kid who had an Odyssey II and even though they were around, nobody I knew had an Intellivision. We all pretty much took offense to those commercials claiming Intellivision was so much better than Atari. We collectively felt like Mattel was calling us stupid to our faces so we had no interest in their machine. Then along came Coleco bringing the Arcade home which was what we'd been wanting all along! When my mom hit me with the argument that I already had an Atari, I agreed to give my aunt my Atari when I bought the expansion Module #1. To this day, give or take some later duplicates, It was the only console I ever got rid of... At any rate, Coleco blew our collective minds and we loved it! I still have my original ColecoVision (now with A/V mod) and my Coleco ADAM (now with A/V cable)... -

I take it Omaha doesn't get much snow? I'm about 8 hours from you, but only one state over (WY)...We sometimes get quite a bit of snow... -
Coleco Chameleon .... hardware speculations?

I think a lot of these statements are easy to make in hindsight. Perhaps a lack of competence, but I'm not sure about a lack of caring or arrogance. I can imagine how things must have gone down. And this is just my imagination at work, I am Not saying I have any esoteric knowledge about this whatsoever. I bet MK talked to Coleco, then sent them some promotional materials, showing he had the molds and was doing a bunch of interviews, podcasts, videos etc., If they went to investigate him, they probably started with the fact he claimed to have a website. They visited Gamegavel and thought **Boom** he Does have a website. He claimed to have a magazine*, They saw Retro and thought **Boom** he Does have a magazine. Without those two items under his belt, he might have seemed less genuine. And it went from there... *For the record I am not talking about the quality, nor content of the magazine...Nor whether or not there was drama, and people being thrown under the bus behind the scenes...Just the fact that it exists. They would have been able to go to Barnes & Noble and buy a glossy printed mag. And putting out a magazine is likely not as easy as it sounds. My friend did a one-off magazine about local (and national) metal bands a while back, and while I was happy to get an interview and 3 reviews about bands I was in; It was an incredible amount of work. He eventually limited it to 500 copies and made it a one time deal. There was spot on the cover where it said, "Price= Your Soul". -
Resident Evil-ish game for the 7800?
GoldLeader replied to MythicalCheesePirate's topic in Atari 7800 Programming
Sounds like an honest mistake to me... One thing to be gained is that PacManPlus knows there is an interest in his game...Maybe someday, after he gets done doing whatever he's doing etc,...I agree it looks fun! I'd love to see a cool horror game come out for 7800... -

Atari Flashback Portable!
GoldLeader replied to Byron's Reviews's topic in AtGames Flashback and Portable Consoles
My advice? Look for things like church sales or pawn shops or flea markets or garage sales; Any one of which might have a better TV waiting for you at (comparatively) dirt cheap prices. Save up if you have to, but there are options out there...Of course look for something that is in good shape,...You'll want to cherry pick the best item here...Sometimes you see a situation where someone just upgraded so they gave away or sold their old TV to make way for the latest thing. That would be ideal. -
I helped a friend move and was given a box of video games from the basement. A SNES, a C64 And The ATARI 2600 we thought was lost to the ages!! Other than my own, This was The Atari I Played most growing up!
-
Great score. Last time I helped someone move all I got was an Egg McMuffin/hash browns and a hearty hug from his wife.
-
-
FWIW, Growing up, he and his brother lived 6 houses away...We used to play Atari and ColecoVision etc...Pretty cool to find this in a box! There's also a Brand New Colecovision controller I gave him a long time ago (Unopened).

Yeah, because we all 'member how it was in the old days...There was never any bugs in games...And if there were we just sent them back! ... Simple as that! And they fixed the cartridges and sent them back free of charge.... -

Enter Mike Kennedy. A sexy voice whispers from stage right..."Hey Parrothead is that a Jaguar in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?" Sorry....I'm just used to the movie being different than the book... -

As a kid I used to love the arcade at Casa Bonita...That was the only place I ever saw Space Odyssey (Sega/Gremlin 1981) ...
-
We went to Casa Bonita about 10 years ago. The place was amazing, but man the food sucks. LOL
-
^I liked the food! But the atmosphere was what really did it...Caves and cliff divers, a waterfall, Black Bart's hideout, puppetshows...And Yeah every time that South Park episode airs I think of it!

Possible Return of the Coleco MiniCades!
GoldLeader replied to thevnaguy's topic in Dedicated Systems
Yeah! I think of that Galaxian 2 almost like it's my first handheld, (If we ignore the old football and basketball games for a moment). And I had it 8 years before Game Boy came out! Though it's almost twice the size of a Game Boy! -

Don't get me wrong, I do have some Coleco tabletops too! Zaxxon, Pac-Man, and Galaxian,...Plus a broken Ms. Pac-Man...All were collected later though (Not from back in the day)... Like I say, I look forward to the return of these guys. And even if they're' done in the old school way, I'm sure I'd be interested in picking up a couple! -

Aside from the Galaxy II, The other one I have and kept in the box from lo those many years ago was an Entex Galaxian 2...I remember I ordered that one from the Montgomery Ward's catalog. I'm not sure if I remember how it worked....Wasn't there a "Catalog Dept" in the store? I seem to remember going there with my mom (Ward's was about 4 blocks from my house) and pointing it out or something, probably filling in some order info. and then we waited for a pone call....Which always took way longer than one would expect back in those days...And eventually they'd call and tell you your order was in. And well, now that I've mentioned it (slightly off topic though it may be)...I decided to dig these out...For what it's worth I paid $48.88 + tax for the Galaxy II, which was bought at Grand Central, a very cool store right next to Montgomery Ward's... I know that Atari Age mantra of Pics or it didn't happen...so.... And I also kept a Merlin and a GBA Micro in the drawer with the Galaxian 2 so I threw them in the pic!
