Checking the head of 1050 disk drive with a multimeter
spawnerbr replied to spawnerbr's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
[SOLVED] / EXPLANATION: Got this "faulty" 1050 from a friend and tested with my working disks that I use on some Ataris. When try to load some disks on this "faulty" 1050, I got BOOT ERROR message. First thing that I noticed is that the red led of the disk status on "faulty" 1050 is on for a long time, when cover of disk drive is opened. Comparing with my 1050, the red led from the faulty one is on for a long time and on my working 1050 don't (short duration for me). So, opened the "faulty" 1050, cleaned, pressed the ICs, checked the head with multimeter, assembled the wires and nothing changed about the led. Everything was done before connect the SIO on the Atari and test... So, I turned on the working 1050 with the cover opened and now I recognized the the led is not so bright, very very low intensity, so when compared to the "faulty" 1050 looks like the led behavior is not correct. Then, connected the "faulty" 1050 on the XL, booted and the disks are booting now! Sometimes I have ERROR 144 when using a Disk Application, but I have to replace the belt cause it is dry and do some lubrication. Thanks for all and sorry for the confusion. -
Checking the head of 1050 disk drive with a multimeter
spawnerbr replied to spawnerbr's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
When I turn on, the head moves and goes to the start point, but the mechanism still spins for 8 seconds with the read/write led on too. Then stops. Disk Drive disconnected. Only turning it on. I have a fully working 1050 that when you turn on, disconnected from the XL, it only blink fast the read/write led, move the head and stops. I connected this faulty 1050 on XL too and same behavior. No floppy inside on the video. Just turning on the faulty disk drive. IMG_6897.mp4 -
Checking the head of 1050 disk drive with a multimeter
spawnerbr replied to spawnerbr's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Just to add information here. Using my working 1050 XL Disk Drive. Using 200 Ohms on resistor scale: 1+3 gives 14.6 2+4 gives 02.6 On the bad 1050 Disk Drive: 1+3 gives 15.6 2+4 gives 02.7 So, the head is working. -
Checking the head of 1050 disk drive with a multimeter

Thanks for your reply. On 1+3 and 2+4 the multimeter does the "beep" sound. So, the head is functional? -
That is the problem. The 1200 XL don't have power for the SDrive-MAX through the pinout or something like that. There is a mod called "SIO 5v Enabled" on the resistor R63, but I can use an external power to use my SDrive. But I did what you suggested. I have 800XL, 65XE and they power the SDrive when the SIOFIX switch is enable.
-
Mine have, but I know that I have to use an external PSU for the SDrive-MAX to use on Atari 1200XL. It is set to power through the SIO, so I can't use external PSU on that position right? Only moving the switch.

Hi all. I know that post is from some years ago, but just to confirm what I read here. My SDrive-MAX is using SIO to power the device. If I wanna use an external 5v power with P4 connector, I need to switch the SIOFIX switcher for this otherwise it will damage my SDrive? So, the switch how it is, working for SIO power. Switch it to use "only" on P4 power. No way to switch to external power and connect to SIO? It will damage too? Thanks.

Best method to transfer real disk to image file
spawnerbr replied to spawnerbr's topic in Apple II Computers
Thanks for your reply. The disks are not originals, are copied disks, formatted ones... so think the normal copy tools like Locksmith with mounted file on wDrive can be a good attempt first. Will try. Thanks! -

Hi all. Recently I got an Atari Lynx model PAG-0201 that is not turning on. I will do the recap and check everything but it came with a bad trimmer. The VR1 50K Trimmer is cracked from the previously owner and need to be replaced. Anyone knows where can I find a new one or old one to replace? Here are the pics! Thanks.

Help an Atari, please! -
Hi all. I'm looking for a spare part key complete set for my Atari 800 XL. I need the DELETE key for a Mitsumi keyboard model. Need the keycap, the plastic plunger and the spring. Need too the metal plate from the function key for other XL but this can be from any model as I just need the metal cap. I have the plastic keycap without the metal part. Anyone can help me?? This are the pictures of my 800 XL. Thanks!

Hi all. Is possible to use an EPROM and burn/programming as the GROM or only get an original IC? Thanks.
