Problem with side expansion port on my beige TI
AMenard replied to AMenard's topic in TI-99/4A Computers
I ended up carefully prying it up with a screwdriver just enough and long enough for me to insert the speech synth in. This baby isn't getting out on its own now... Man I could do so many virgin jokes right now -
TI-99 Photos Thread! Post your systems here!
AMenard replied to slinkeey's topic in TI-99/4A Computers
Well here is my humble setup... Still missing the printer (in the mail) but since I don't have a centronic interface for the TI anyway it doesn't really matter for now. Don't mind the Atari, it gets along with the TI just fine they even share the same girlfriend (the 1702 monitor) The red dot on the Atari is just me being clumsy with my new Huion pen display in Krita -

Another (totally unrelated) floppy drive question
AMenard replied to AMenard's topic in TI-99/4A Computers
Just plugged in my newly arrived PEB. As expected the drive is dead, well it start knocking while formatting a disk around sector 255 and end the process with an error 41. But this isn't unexpected for something that old and for the price I paid for the PEB. The 32k ram expansion work and I have yet to test the RS232 card. The guy also included a Disk Manager 2 cart so I'm good for that for the moment, but will probably go for a more modern version once I get the disk drive problem fixed. One other thing I'm going to replace soon is the PSU or at a minimum the fan! Man, that thing is loud. It sound as if I was in an old server room with a rack of spinning 10k rpm scsi drives... I'll post pictures in the appropriate thread once I get the new drives. -
Hi, For the love of all I hold dear, I can't seem to be able to insert anything in the side of my beige TI-99... There is a kind of a flap/Spring that just push the VS and/or the firehose out when inserted. Here's a pic of it: Is it safe to remove or modify it?

Another (totally unrelated) floppy drive question
AMenard replied to AMenard's topic in TI-99/4A Computers
Oh, I have the controller... I just want to swap the full height floppy drive and install a half height 5¼ and a half height 3½ instead. It's the drives that I'm going hunting for -
Quoting myself as to remember to verify the connectors before ordering spare parts... My 130XE original keyboard is in fact working. Just had a bit of corrosion on the ribon connector. Removing it from the socket, cleaning it and putting it back cleared my option and start keys problem. I'll keep the new one as a spare for either myself or to pass on to someone who needs one.

Great! I've dropped a PM to atrax27407 for his offer on the roms. Now, does anybody have the info on what drives are compatible? I was thinking of going one 5¼" and one 3½", both half height, in a dual drive setup in the PEB. -

I have the soldering skill. Is there some documentation on how to do this, if so I would be interested in those eprom of yours. -
Hi, I'm just wondering if the TI-99 needs a full recap like other computer of those time. On my Atari 130XE it's an easy task with just 5 of them present on the board, but since I didn't crack open neither of my TI-99 I'm wondering how many of the are in need of preventive replacement? If we do have to replace them, is there a list or BOM available? Thanks.

Hi, As I should be receiving my PEB today, and since the thing is over 30 years old now, I was wondering what 5¼" physical floppy drive are compatible with it? In case the dirve ever goes bad on me and I wanted to replace it. Also how hard is it to modify the controller for 80 tracks like I'm seeing many people have done. I've seen kits on eBay for dual 3½" floppies for the PEB and I could see a use for it as 5¼" disk are becoming less available than 3½" in my neck of the wood. Also, does anybody have the following cart gathering dust (loose is fine even without manuals). I would be interested in acquiring them: TI Extended Basic Disk Manager (ver 2 or 3, or whatever would be compatible with 80 tracks if I can mod the controller in my PEB) TI Terminal Emulator II Thanks in advance to those who'll respond!

Also, it's easy to just hook up a smartphone/computer via the audio jack and just use a .wav file version instead of the actual tape these days. I already have a PC under my desk that I use as a software repo for my Atari 130XE via an SIO2PC interface so it can also host, and will host, TI-99 software. I'm planing to hooked it up via RS232 to the TI until I can get my hand on a gotek or some other device. -
I'm greatly satisfied of my trade with save2600. I would do business again with him anytime.

Why would I leave... I just got here Beside this community has already help me in finding a PEB and answering my noob questions. I hope some day to be able to help another new user as I've been helped. In the mean time I'm learning a lot by just following the many TI related threads. But I might add, that as much as I would like having a complete system, I don't really see a tape deck being part of my setup for the simple fact that finding a still working tape player is getting really hard. Most needs new belts which are also getting hard to find. -
You need about 1.5A for a C64

Really impressed by the TI E/A binder/package!
AMenard replied to AMenard's topic in TI-99/4A Development
One of the thing I find bizarre though, is why do you need the cart to run assembled program? In other system that I know, once assembled the code is a self executable but on the TI you seem to need the E/A cart to run them, or did I missunderstood? -

They do say this in the intro, recommending that people first read a book or two on other processor assembly language before tackling this one. But, I'm kind of their target audience -
Hi, As a new TI-99/4a owner I'm really surprised by the quality and completeness of the E/A kit. They even included a commercially released game (Tombstone City), with source, as an example! That's something Commodore would never have done, especially during the Tramiel years... Of course the price of entry on the TI was a bit high since you needed a disk based system to use it and the price for the PEB was out of my reach anyway (so was the computer) in the early 80's. Hey, but at least I can enjoy it now! I should receive my PEB this week (I hope) and will be able to lean and practice coding on the TI.

I'm surprised RS and TRS-80 aren't more recognized..?
AMenard replied to Keatah's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
Unreliability came later. In the 70's and 80's RS did sell great stuff. They never spend the $$$ on marketing compared to other brands of computers or audio gear. The brand suffered with the decline of the electronics hobbyist market and their decision to turn their stores into cell phones kiosk. -
Forgot to plug it in....
