  1. A NES AC adaptor will work just fine. The connection is a little loose though, but it works.

    Kabooooom!

I’m a long time lurker on AA, but I just had to crawl out from under my rock for this… I’ve always felt that Kaboom was one of the most demanding video games of any era. It’s not like today’s games where beating the game is more a matter of deciding if you want to put in the requisite hours to play through it. Lasting past the first few thousand points in Kaboom requires excellent hand-to-eye coordination, incredible reflexes, and considerable endurance, not to mention total concentration. Anyway, I found this game a little over a year ago and I’ve been hooked on it ever since. There is no other game past or present that has the lasting play appeal that this one does to make you want to play just one more game again and again and again. I’ve been playing Kaboom regularly (usually around 4 hours a week) since I found it and I feel like I get a little bit better every time I play. Today I did the unthinkable… I got a score of 364,919! I did it on a heavy sixer in front of a 27” TV. I took about 10 pictures of the screen with my really crappy digital camera, and I think the pic posted below turned out the best (I hope it shows up in this post). I wasn’t at all expecting to get such a high score. My previous record was 95,064, but I’d usually get incredibly nervous whenever I got close to that score and completely choke. But not this time. Once I passed 100k the stress was gone and it was smooth sailing. The game took approximately 2 hours and my thumb was getting really sore by the end of it. The funny thing is, I distinctly remember about a year ago when I wanted to hit 10,000 points so bad (so I could see the Mad Bomber’s “surprise”), but thinking that it was completely out of the question for me to accomplish even that. After today, I truly believe that scoring 999,999 is only a matter of time for me! There aren’t many people in my day-to-day world who can appreciate this, so I’m sharing it with you guys. Do any of you enjoy this game as much as I do?
  3. SMB 3 did cost $100 where I lived. My parents had to plunk down $99 in March of 1990 to pick up that game for their spoilt little kid (me).
  4. I've owned the NES version since childhood, and if this is a faithful port, there will be 50 levels. After you complete level 50 in the NES version, you are given a quick one screen ending.
  5. 1-Kaboom 2-Pitfall! 3-Adventure 4-Warlords 5-Seaquest 6-Frogger 7-Stampede 8-Pitfall II 9-Missile Command 10-Reactor
  6. Super Mario Bros. Special was released for the PC88. It was very similar to SMB, but it was a flick screen game instead of a scroller. I think it was Hudson who licensed it from Nintendo, but I could be wrong.
  7. It's also easier than the US release (ie starting at Drac's stairs if he kills you). Beating the US version is a greater feat. However, I do agree that Akamajou Densetsu is the "superior" version due to the audio.
  8. I think it has a lot to do with the many game variations and options inherent in 2600 games. If you want to play Warlords with 3 people in slow mode, what game number is that? Even simple games like Space Invaders have like 60 different variations. Keeping manuals for those games is/was a necessity. Quite often in the NES era there was only one mode (press start) or at the most an easy/medium/difficlut option.
  9. Don't forget Super Mario Bros. 2! And a lot of translation patches for text-intensive games like Sweet Home can be found here: http://donut.parodius.com/?func=trans&platform=nes
  10. Yes, there is a 4th ending if you go solo. And the final form of Drac is easy if you have an axe: just stay in the bottom right corner of the screen on the second tile (I think) from the right and jump and throw axes. Take your time and dodge the beams of course.
  11. "Darth Vader" of DP is the man you need to talk to. Send him a PM over there. I'm sure he still has many CX78's left.
  12. I would suggest ignoring screw variations and seal of quality variations, but covering everything else. Have you contacted Dave2236 of the DP forums? He's just started a nes variations project himself.
