I totally disagree on that. I don't know if anything will ever match the level of shovelware on the PSX. Not even the PS2 will top it. Genesis library is also much more bogged down with sports crap and was competing with SNES for developers. NES had a virtual monopoly on all the best game developers in the world for a spell. But even if all 3 of these systems only had a library 5 games each, I don't know why you would think that they deserve mention in "worst console ever" thread. Whatever the answer is, it's gotta be obscure.

Gotta be Kaboom for me. People who say Solaris surprise me. It's a fun game and very difficult, but once you beat it and get that sense of accomplishment, I'm sure your desire to play it would seriously wane. It's basically like a NES game that's long and difficult. After you've beat it once, you might not get the impetus to play it again for years. That's why it's good to pick those "never-ending" games with pulse-pounding action like Asteroids, Missile Command, Space Invaders, etc. (Yes, I know Kaboom technically ends/freezes, but you get the idea)

Beautiful find. Posts like this make it seem like garage sales are still worth it for pre-NES stuff, but I personally don't think it's worth the time and effort of going to the 1000+ garage sales I would have to go to in order to make an atari find like that. ...then again, your neck o' the woods may be different.

Is it possible to build an Arkanoid controller?
Dr. Morbis replied to keilbaca's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I would assume he's talking about the NES game that came with a Vaus controller. They frequently broke and the knob is just too small. What I'd like to know is if someone has the expertise to wire a VCS paddle controller or driving controller to plug into a NES and work with Arkanoid. That would be killer! -
Mr. Do!'s Castle has great background music on the VCS too.
-
You should do the balloon music from Pitfall II. It's a great little ditty but you only get to hear it for like 5 seconds at a time in the game.

When a person in 2006 goes out and buys a 10+ year old system, they are not doing it based on a perception of its past popularity. They are buying a system because it has some old games that they want to play. The "Genesis library is loaded with sports crap" theory may have a little bit to do with it, and the "hardcore vs casual gamer" theory might have something to it as well. But the bottom line is that the SNES library is more "timeless" with more quality titles that people want to play years later. Sonic may be good, but anyone with an ounce of objective perception can see that Super Mario World has much more depth than the Sonic games and is much more engaging. Also, production numbers have nothing to due with it. SNES and Genesis were pretty much a dead heat. For every Genesis system you see in a thrift store, there is a SNES in someone's living room that the owner has no intention of throwing out. It's obvious from thrifting that most SNES owners are keeping/handing down their systems, while most genesis owners are tossing their consoles out the door. Good systems, just like good games, are usually harder to find in the wild. They made millions of Mike Tyson's Punch Out carts, but I rarely see them in the wild. Why? Because if you own a NES, you are definitely keeping that game on your shelf. It's the same thing with the SNES: if all of our collective thrifting observations tell us anything, it is that the SNES is a definite keeper!

I think he was remembering CV III which used symbols like hearts, holy water, etc in it's password system.
-
As said, snaga PC Engine, but do keep your TG16 lying around for when you make the occasional TG find in the wild.

Where are you located? Up here in Canada we often got the PAL-style multilanguage boxes with an "N" sticker to denote that the cart was NTSC (just like the sticker on your Keystone Kapers box). But we got standard US english-only boxes just as often, there seemed to be no rhyme or reason...

I think this whole "Air Raid" fiasco is just a communication breakdown. Imagine if some Phillipino found a stash of Zellers carts in his local shop in the Phillipines and showed all his friends. I imagine there'd be a bunch of Phillipino's standing around in a circle staring at those strange cartridges and scratching their heads and concocting various 'theories' about them. It is also funny that the 7 known American findings (known by Americans who post on an American website... Ha!) somehow is plausible support for them being American games. I guess that means the Mark II cart I recently found in my town is Canadian (since I'm in Canada). Correct colors for NTSC is a compelling argument for the US being an intended market, but what does that matter? "Air Raid" wasn't the first pirate intended for sale in America, nor the last. So why is it any more significant than any other pirate out there? I just don't get it. 56% of another game's code? I mean come on!!!

I don't think Kaboom can be made any better than it already is. Any further "enhancements" would only serve to drive a wedge between you and the game, breaking your concentration. Bonus rounds and other fancy bells and whistles like improved graphics would only be distractions. That being said, I'm now going to contradict myself and say that the one thing I would like added is a small "buckets lost" counter in the bottom corner of the screen that keeps track of (duh!) how many buckets you lose in each game. It would be cool to see how many buckets people like Todd Rogers lost when he scored 999,999.

Bumper Bash & 90+ other 2600 games for trade...
Dr. Morbis replied to Dr. Morbis's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
Well Bumper Bash is gone, but surely there has got to some people with small budding collections that need some of these carts. To get 1 or two carts I need, I'm more than willing to send 5 or 10 your way -
I've got Bumper Bash by Spectravision. It has a small rectangular puncture in the middle of the label, but the two round screw holes on each side are not punctured. I'd like to trade it (or any of the games further below) for a few of the games I need to complete my Activision/Absolute set: ACT/ABS NEEDED: -Boxing -Cosmic Commuter -Kung Fu Master -River Raid II -Title Match Pro Wrestling -Atlantis (BLUE) -Demon Attack (BLUE) -Moonsweeper (BLUE) Other Wants: -Frankenstein’s Monster -Mountain King -Montezuma’s Revenge -Frogger II -Tapper -Space Invaders (RED) -Yars’ Revenge (RED) -Q*Bert (RED) -Road Runner (RED) -Sentinel (RED) -Super Football (RED) -Xenephobe (RED) -Dark Chambers (RED) -Double Dunk (RED) -Stellar Track -Steeplechase -Submarine Commander -Sneak ‘n Peak ================================= Below is a list of all my doubles. If you want any of these, PM your list of doubles and hopefully we can help each other's collection grow. I'm only at 200 titles, so I still need a ton of commons myself. 95% of these carts are in great cosmetic condition with no rips or tears, but if you are really worried about a specific game, just ask. Here's what's available: ACTIVISION -Grand Prix (blue) -River Raid (blue) -Dolphin -Keystone Kapers -Spider Fighter -Starmaster -Tennis -Chopper Command -Plaque Attack -Freeway -Robot Tank -Crackpots -Activision Decathlon -Seaquest -Oink! -Ice Hockey -Space Shuttle -Sky Jinks x 3 -Megamania x 3 M-NETWORK -Frogs and Flies -Tron Deadly Discs -Super Challenge Baseball -Lock ‘N’ Chase -Armor Ambush -Space Attack -Super Challenge Football -Dark Cavern -Astroblast -Air Raiders COLECO -Carnival -Donkey Kong -Mouse Trap -Venture PARKER BROS. -Amidar -Popeye -Reactor -Q*Bert IMAGIC -Cosmic Ark -Demon Attack US GAMES -Towering Inferno -Word Zapper CBS -Solar Fox -Wizard of Wor -Gorf (1 label on each side) ATARI -Crossbow -Midnight Magic -Solaris -Sprintmaster x 2 -Vanguard -Mario Bros. -Centipede -Joust x 2 -Kangaroo -Raiders of the Lost Ark -Swordquest Earthworld -Phoenix -Jungle Hunt -Haunted House -Video Olympics -Video Pinball -Video Chess -Yars’ Revenge -Berzerk -Maze Craze -Slot Racers -Circus Atari -Galaxian -Football -Backgammon (text) -Homerun (text) -Casino (text) -Bowling (text) MANUALS (ML = Multi-Language) -Air Sea Battle - ML -Pac-Man - ML -Pole Position -Street Racer - ML -Amidar -Video Pinball - ML -Combat - ML -Breakout- ML -Tomcat BOX -Skate Boardin’ (mint but folded flat) FREE (just pay shipping for any/all of this) -Combat (text) x 4 -Missile Command x 2 -Defender x 3 -Asteroids x 3 -Star Raiders x 3 -Warlords x 2 -Super Breakout x 2 -Ms. Pac-Man x 2 -E.T. -Space Invaders -Pac-Man ***I will try to respond to all PM's within 48 hours. Non arcade port that appeared on the most consoles?
Dr. Morbis replied to godzillajoe's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Has anyone mentioned Simcity? -
Maybe not, but 213ed's initial post got me laughing so hard back then that it's been my signature ever since.

I hearby declare my previous post/list null and void. Here's my new list: 1.Kaboom! 2.H.E.R.O. 3.Adventure 4.Frostbite 5.Pressure Cooker 6.Smurf: RIGC 7.Frogger 8.Pitfall! 9.Warlords 10.Pitfall II

Because killing them costs 5 missiles, but they leave you something like 25 missiles (I forget the exact number) half the time. Killing metroids replenishes your missile count, it doesn't deplete it.

IGN's Ignorant NEX Review
Dr. Morbis replied to Great Hierophant's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Are you going to keep this up until all of the next employees are physically crucified? I think every single retrogamer in our little "community" is acutely aware of the NEX's shortcomings by now. These threads are like travelling to a deserted island and finding an old Vietnam Vet in full camo carrying a machine gun who thinks the war is still on 35 years later. The war is over :!: -
I have Winter Games, and most events play perfectly fine. But whenever it gets to the bobsled (or is it luge?) the screen goes absolutely ballistic. It looks like scrambled porn or something. I've always thought that this was how the 2600 reacted when it ran out of time. Whereas on any other system, I would just be seeing standard lag.

Anyone Buy Legend of Zelda DVD Box Set?
Dr. Morbis replied to Mendon's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Do they have a DVD set of Captain N yet? I'd buy that one for sure, but I only ever saw a handful of Zelda episodes so I won't be getting this one. -
What does classic gaming mean to you?
Dr. Morbis replied to Sayton's topic in Classic Console Discussion
It means never having to say your sorry. Seriously though, in my experience it means having to justify your gaming habits to 'the masses' ad nauseam. Nowadays I just listen to their belittlement of older games and then reply "enjoy your Xbox". -
Why was the NES Donkey Kong 3 levels only?
Dr. Morbis replied to Lacan's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Well it came out in Japan in 1983, and was released in the US in 1986. I think 3 years is more than enough time for them to get it done right if they had wanted too. As said, it was just plain laziness. -
Kaboom: a minute to learn, a lifetime to master. Plus the paddles provide such tight play control that I feel like I'm controlling the "buckets" directly from my mind.
