1 hour ago, PFG 9000 said:Whether or not the term Metroidvania is a good term is irrelevant. When somebody uses the term, we all (or most of us, at least) know what is being referred to. It doesn't have to have themes from either Metroid or Castlevania. It just needs to have the gameplay elements that most Metroids and the SotN-style Castlevanias share:
1) a 2D, sidescrolling view
2) one large interconnected map
3) exploration and backtracking
4) accessing new areas via newly found traversal abilities
The thing is, we need to have a term to represent this style of game. Until something better takes its place, that term is Metroidvania.
Before the edit 1 hour ago the Wikipedia page for Castlevania SOTN said action adventure, platformer
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castlevania:_Symphony_of_the_Night
This is also the genre listed for Super Metroid and Metroid Zero Mission.
Not really a mystery, its action adventure and platformer.
Another game that comes to mind is ALIEN RAMPAGE for DOS. I can't find any info anywhere on that game anymore. Its like it no longer exists. It was a cool example though.

Until the companies Nintendo and Capcom come forward and make it official, this is not nor will it ever be a genre. Thats why your wiki link says subgenre. That's like mixing gameplay elements from Mario and Pacman and naming it a new genre pacmanmario games. Thats like calling all First person shooters DOOM games.
can you imagine Nintendo releasing a new game from this "genre" and labeling it a "metroidvania" game? They cant because VANIA. Likewise Capcom nor any other company can use the name Metroid in their games. (Unless Nintendo gives them permission)

No it is not a genre. But I do understand what you mean and that you have no intention of keeping it that way, which is good

watch what Nintendo will do with this if the character sprite and title doesn't change before this product is up for sale on cart

You can't use sprites of Samus Aran. She is a copyrighted Nintendo IP.
Even though it looks like a mash up of Metroid Zero Mission Samus for GBA and fan art for the head, it's still Samus at the end of the day.
I only tell you this as advice because as soon as somebody from this forum reports this project to Nintendo Of America they will most definitely issue a mandate for cease and desist of this project and you will not be able to sell any loose green carts of it. Nintendo is VERY BIG about protecting their characters and IP. They have shut down MANY fan projects, don't even mention selling a product with their IP. I strongly suggest you change the character to something entirely different.
This is not metroid-vania as this name would imply that it has both elements of Metroid and Castlevania. I see no elements or anything that makes it look like Castlevania. It's just Metroid
I suggest you make an original character and if you are going to call it metroidvania (bad name btw) then implement elements that resemble gameplay elements from Castlevania.
Pause function was not present in Wormhole 2000. I would also suggest that this project has a pause function as people will complain about paying money for a new Jaguar game with no pause.

(also, this is not from the VCS... otherwise I would have bought one
)
Here is DKC Tropical Freeze just standing around on stage 3 doing nothing
Here is Mario Kart 8 in the middle of a race
Mario Kart 8 is running in offline mode but it can run online with real Wii U and Switch users. I have not tested the performance in online mode. For this game the GPU temperature reached 91 degrees C or 195.8 degrees F but it did not get any higher than that. On a side note it was also performing at 3.3 GHZ at peak
Below is Zelda Breath of The Wild. I could only ever get 15 FPS at my current settings but Im hoping to get better performance after tweaking with it more.

finally I guess, I got it now 😎.
After fiddling around with different options and some strange behavior of the VCS,
I have figured out whats do, to make the BIOS changes persistent, without deleting partitions (or the whole ATARI-OS) from the eMMC.
- First of all you have to prepare the hardware hack from @Charles Darwin
- After than go to the BIOS and change all options, you want to change.
- Finally go to "AMD CBS" menu, "choose FCH Common options" , go to "eMMC Options" and than go down to choose "eMMC Boot" (see pictures attached too)
- now choose "Disabled" and press F10 (Save & Exit)- now let´s reboot the system and start straight forward to the ATARI-OS
- it will be forced an "Dummy" Update procedure, but after it´s done, ATARI-OS works fine, and doesn´t ask again for Updates after reboot (except a real new Update is available)
- now you can start your alternative OS with your prefered proper BIOS settings 😉
(See pictures attached....the last two pictures shows the "VT enabled" message from Task manager and from the NOX app too)
I tried out this procedure for two times to proof, and it works for me.
Cheers,
andY
I have some questions. I want to try this but am not sure if the risks outweigh the benefits so I will get straight to what it is I would like to accomplish from full bios access. You 2 seem to have gotten very far along. You tell me based on what you have found in the bios if it's possible.
*I want to re-allocate system RAM to video RAM By default it uses 2 GB of RAM for video but I now have the full 32 GB and would like to allocate at least 8 GB to video. Can this be done?
* I wouldn't mind trying to slightly overclock the APU. Are any options available for this?
* I want to boot from my installed SSD instead of an external SSD because I believe the access speeds will be faster. Can this be changed here?
Thanks and keep up the good work!

This is DKC Tropical Freeze running in glorious 4K on the Wii U emulator at 60 FPS.
I tested several other Wii U games all ran nearly perfect.
To all the Atari VCS haters, this thing is the real deal. It's the ultimate emulation machine.
Tropical Freeze!!!!
(Side note I do have the max 32 GB of RAM now and that is using the Vulkan plugin on the Cem U emulator)

I'm sorry I figured it out. It seems you're not supposed to set up the account you intend to actually use until after the bios update. The initial account I set up got an email activation confirmation from laomK123 and the second one I set up actually came from Atari

Hey guys I have a question here. I am getting my VCS in the mail Monday, I have already bought 32GB RAM and a 500 GB M.2 SATA SSD. I want to install Windows 10. I do not use Windows 10, I actually use Windows 7 on my main laptop so I don't know much about Windows 10. I DO have a gaming laptop that is out of commission. (MSI DOMINATOR PRO) It will probably be out of commission indefinitely as I am not paying close to $1000 for a new motherboard for it. It has Windows 10 PRO 64 bit. I would like to use the key from it's installation as I did pay for the OS for that laptop (It wasnt loaded with Win 10 originally). Is it possible to transfer that key over to my VCS legally? like legally or is that installation now married to the MSI? Can I do Windows To Go from a clone image of the MSI hdd and it work to boot the VCS? I really would like to know if this stuff is possible. Perhaps Microsoft could be contacted and transfer the license from the MSI to the VCS? Does anyone know how I could go about this? I paid $110 for that Windows and it seems like such a waste and now I am in need of a Windows for this new Atari machine.

F-ZERO GX and the Dolphin emulator are acually things I had in mind for my VCS. Glad to see it it works, and with the out of the box 8GB of RAM that is impressive. Upgrading the RAM would most likely improve those PS2 games performance as well.

Greetings folks,
Over the course of 2 days (Christmas Eve and Christmas respectively) I made this mini game for the Jaguar. The plan was to upload a stand alone binary of the game for free for those who have a SKUNKBOARD and Jaguar GD to enjoy it and then later on include the game within ZYX Game Collection #1 on a yellow cartridge for a physical type release (with box and manual) for those who would be interested. (Price point would have been $40 for the 4 games together on yellow cart). Although I'm not sure if that physical release is still going to happen, I still wanted to upload the stand alone version of 3D ZYX for people to have.
So what the hell is ZYX and What the hell is 3D Zyx?
ZYX is the last 3 letters of the alphabet read backwards!
ZYX Origins: IntyBasic Showcase Volume 1
Zyx is a game that was originally created by Atari2600land (Chris Read) for the Intellivision. It was included in the homebrew games collection INTYBasic Showcase Vol. 1 in 2016 and was written in Basic. Below is the boxart for that collection (featuring a drawing of Zyx) and a video of the original Zyx in action on the Intellivision.
In ZYX you control a strange looking retro style character named ZYX who must eat bananas that are falling down on him in the bottom of a well. You must not let the bananas hit the ground and you must also avoid the games antagonist characters the VUTS. (VUT is another 3 letters of the alphabet read backwards!) The concept was a simple and fun mini game and Chris made a nice contribution to the InyBasic collection with ZYX.
ZYX Game Collection #1
Chris soon decided that he wanted to bring his Zyx character over to the Jaguar and began working on a collection of games for his character to appear in. One of the games "Classic Zyx" is an updated version of the Intellivision game with the other games being a different twist on the eat the banana formula. Zyx Game Collection #1 is still being worked on as of this writing and is set to be published by WAVE 1 GAMES upon it's completion in the future .
3D ZYX (aka Zyx has a ball)
3D ZYX was created by myself to be a contribution to Chris's existing Zyx games collection, as such it is a mini game and was designed to be just that. The game is a Faux 3D remake of the classic Zyx game inspired by the blue sphere bonus stages of Sonic The Hedgehog. There are 4 stages in 3D ZYX. Grass, techno, snow and lava. After you beat the 4 stages the game will loop back to stage 1, you will retain your score and the game will get slightly harder. In the game bananas will fly towards the screen at variable heights and you must jump up to eat them while avoiding the different styled VUTS. You must also avoid trees and other obstacles as well as deal with flying fireballs and falling pineapples. There are plenty of 1-UPs that will appear so the game never gets too challenging. There is also a REDBULL powerup that can be collected by Zyx and well, REDBULL gives you wings! Once you get the REDBULL you will have 30 seconds of temporary flight. This powerup will allow you to avoid the VUTS and most obstacles, however flying fireballs and falling pineapples will still be a danger.
below are the ROM files for the different devices. If you are using an emulator I recommend using The Phoenix Project emulator or Project Tempest to play this ROM as the game does not seem to perform correctly in Virtual Jaguar. I am not aware of how it runs on any other emulators.
3D ZYX SKUNKBOARD VERSION
3D ZYX JAGUAR GAME DRIVE VERSION
Please enjoy this mini game as I certainly enjoyed making it over Christmas!

And here is the listing in question.
I do not know this person and this is NOT my work. Thats not even the white insert trays I use for my games. I use the generic SNES ones

Funny as I have never even seen this boxart before. If you'll gladly flip back to page 1 you'll see that I made a custom UGC insert and cart label based off Felyx artwork not yours, but even with that I have never produced or sold any carts of the game. Whoever told you the game and boxart came from me is a liar and I would appreciate it if you name that person TODAY.

No I didn't say what you said. I never said that the hitboxes scale automatically when you scale a sprite. You took what I said out of context then you insulted me saying that I lack basic comprehension skills all based off of your incorrect statement of what I said. You are in the wrong and you're disrespectful, and you are continuing to be disrespectful even after the fact that I pointed out you made a mistake.
that whole case statement you just made is in itself childish.
I know you won't admit your error and apologize and I see the direction you want this to go so I'm done here.
To Linkovich and Welshworrier thank you for clarifying what you meant. You also did not come off as disrespectful when I didn't understand something, thank you for that as well. At least I learned something new today.
-
23 minutes ago, CyranoJ said:And this is why the collisions in *ALL* your games are wrong.
The hitbox sizes do *NOT* scale with the sprite scale size. Again, it's a failure to understand something rudementary on your part. Stop projecting and writing essays that just dig the hole deeper. That's NOT what I said.
-
18 minutes ago, CyranoJ said:Then you should probably try implementing it so collisions work in at least one of your games.
You're not even reading what I'm writing.
I said that the hit boxes here are configured here as half of the sprite size from the center. I said I am not manually adjusting the hitboxes as the sprites scale because it isn't necessary for the objects here as all collisions take place
at the same point here ie the character never actually moves inward or outward of the playfield
I never implied that the hitboxes automatically adjust when you're scaling a sprite size.
You're taking what I'm writing out of context and accusing me of projecting so I'll spell it out more clearly; At no point did I make the claim that when you scale a sprite the hitboxes also scale. In order to do that you must set the
hitboxes manually. (in some cases you may need to use an offset) What I did say was that hitboxes would not need to be scaled with the sprites here as that is not the way collisions take place on the character

Metroidvania for Atari Jaguar - anyone?

Resident Evil is not a platform action adventure game. Platform action adventure game. Or Run and gun.
Just because everyone likes to say it's a genre doesn't mean that it is.
This is just like all of the memes going around these days of people blowing on N64 carts to get them working. This is false. This was never a thing. (NES and SNES yes) Nobody ever blew on N64 carts because there is a black plastic dust protector inside of every cart right at the connector so what would you actually be blowing? Yet for some strange reason it has been widely accepted as gaming fact/history.
Metroidvania is not a genre. Its not even a subgenre. It a weird way to describe a action adventure side scrolling game that has been widely accepted as ok and I guess is trending among gamers?
Hell I dont know. Anyway I gotta go check out this new zelda-roids style game....
