  1. Oh this is great! Check out the latest group Coleco is promoting at their expo:

    attachicon.gifScreen Shot 2017-05-27 at 19.51.06.png

Then let's click on their website and what do we see?

    attachicon.gif2cf2f4ec518618fb6f3219ad1576be94_original.png

That's right! Their product uses the official Nintendo logo!

    attachicon.gifScreen Shot 2017-05-27 at 19.35.54.png

So Coleco & Chris Cardillo - Since this is something you're promoting and OBVIOUSLY you've done your due diligence before showcasing this group, is it safe to assume that we can use the Coleco logos as long as we write "Unlicensed by Coleco Holdings LLC" because clearly that would be hypocritical of you to promote one group and bash another for doing *THE EXACT SAME THING!!!*

Don't bother replying, I know the answer...

So they say it's an NES cart but it's NOT for the NES. They're dumber than I originally thought. Of course those hypocrites are fine with others using the Nintendo logo and supporting those who use the Nintendo logo. They're fine with whatever they say is okay; they're contradictory and hypocritical jerks.

  2. And again, my work is mentionned. I'm omnipresent. XD

And (like a broken record) I just do it for fun... with hope it's still possible.

I'm grateful for your work. Furthermore, I'm grateful for your fixes. If I'm not mistaken, you're the one who fixed that HORRIBLE glitch in Turbo. I remember when it would say 00 cars passed, and then a car passes you and it says you passed 99 cars! If I'm not mistaken, you're the one who fixed that. What Sega feckupeth, sir Daniel B. fixeth!

  3. I don't know if this should be in this topic but since Wicked Cool Toys now owns the rights to Cabbage Patch Kids, there was an ugly dispute between them and CPK's old license from Jakk's Pacific. https://globenewswire.com/news-release/2015/09/29/771718/10150907/en/Wicked-Cool-Toys-Intends-to-Vigorously-Defend-Against-JAKKS-Pacific-Lawsuit.html

According to the colecotoys website they mention "from the company that bought you Cabbage Patch Dolls," some may read and think they're the company that "owns" CBK but in reality it's Wicked Cool Toys that owns the license. Do I smell a another lawsuit between ColecoToys and WCT? Hmmmmm....

Please let WCT know about it! :D

There's at least one voice of sanity that replied to the post:

I, as a complete bystander who has nothing to do with this scene either by hay of coleco or the fan boys, immediately dismiss this as fictitious on the basis of posts that I have read that provide proof of the interaction that has occurred between coleco and that fan club that coleco now denies and is deleting comments from where they can (such as facebook) rather than attempting to in any way address the legitimate concerns of onlookers.

The deleting comments on Facebook and other locations is very interesting - and completely damning against them. Glad that the evidence, and the truth, has been preserved in this thread where they cannot touch it.

Par for the course. Crooked people doing crooked things. Never changes.

Here's another comment that has just been posted at the above link. <Sarcasm on> Coleco sound like a wonderful company so I just don't understand why Robb was so unreasonable with them. <Sarcasm off> Red text is my highlighting.

For starters, I’m currently working on two different projects with Coleco, however I will keep this comment as unbiased at possible, since, above all, gaming is my passion. That being said, I do have some inside information regarding this matter, and I’m interested to see how the community reacts to my point of view.
    1. They asked nicely for them to take down a pornographic game post.(And i DO mean pornographic as a very loose term.) It wasn’t as disrespect, or even trying to strong arm the community into anything. The reason why is because they are in the process of releasing Coleco products marketed for kids. When they asked them to take it down (again, NOT DEMANDED), they became indignant, and started to threaten them with the exact repercussions they’re facing now, which is, “You can’t tell us what to do, and we’re going to turn the community against you if you try”.
    2. I’ve read a few different posts from people, pitchforks in hand, bemoaning about how wrong it is that Coleco is trying to target, and shut down the home brew community. This.. is actually kind of hilarious. Coleco is currently employing three different home brew programmers to work on various projects. I know at least one of the developers declined to comment on this matter because said person is afraid of community backlash… if that tells you something.
    3. I spent some time with one of the current owners of Coleco. I can pretty much tell you as a fact that he bought into the Coleco IP to work on as a passion project. That dude has the craziest GI Joe collection I’ve ever seen, and he loves all things 80’s. Does he want the upcoming projects to be successful? Of course. But these projects are far the image of a money grabbing scheme that some people are trying to paint. The people I’ve met with seemed extremely busy with a multitude of different projects, gaming and non-gaming alike. It didn’t seem to me like the type of operation that would be involved with petty things such as attacking its own community.
    4. The Chameleon fiasco occurred before I started working with Coleco. I read through the entire forum posts in disbelief just like some of you did. So when the company contacted me to do work with them, I really wanted to know what was going on with that situation before I agreed to work with them. From what I understand, Coleco wanted to partner with somebody, who, again, is highly involved in the Retro Gaming/Home brew community, to create a console. My professional opinion is that the team trying to produce that console was a little bit over their head, but well intentioned.. And that Coleco was offering its trademark to market the console, but wasn’t involved with much else. So, in retrospect, the fact that Coleco still tries to have the retro gaming community involved in creating products is.. to put lightly.. surprising? I think any other company would immediately write off trying to do business with members of its small homebrew community after that debacle.
That’s my two cents. The entire gaming community is notorious for shitting on the companies that make them. Business as usual I suppose.
My thoughts are what a load of biased BS.

That entire comment was a load of biased BS, as you pointed out. And Coleco NEVER asked nicely; what they did was target the wrong people and kept bullying the wrong people. They feel they were donkey-punched in the back of the head, but they target Guy A when Guy B was the one doing the donkey-punching. Then after everybody in the community beats them over the head with a tack hammer to remind them of how stupid they're being and targeting THE WRONG PEOPLE, they continue to target the wrong people and then lie about everything. They can go to hell.

Furthermore, whoever this joker is that's working with them cannot have his words taken as fact at face value: HE'S WORKING WITH THEM!

  6.

That's a big "if" in a whole series of "ifs". If the bottom didn't fall out of the industry and if Coleco didn't make poor business decisions, including the Adam diversion, it may very well have continued success beyond its roughly 3 years on the market with the ColecoVision. At the same time, there's nothing to say that with the NES's Japanese-sourced games, including the breakthrough Super Mario Bros., the momentum still wouldn't have shifted firmly in their favor, even if Coleco had a ColecoVision 2 ready by 1986.

But wouldn't Nintendo have probably made the games for Coleco, much like they did during the Colecovision run? I'm not so sure the NES would have ever existed if the crash never happened. I think Nintendo would have stuck to making games instead of coming up with their own hardware.

  7. I'm so glad to see this community doesn't flinch when staring in the face of evil. The fact that we're all taking a stand together is great and it reinforces my faith in humanity's intelligence. This is much better than the usual human response of apathy when a company slings so much bull.

    1. Thank you for being smart and caring
    2. Thank you for taking the time to really see through their lies
    3. Thank you for seeing the big picture and taking a stand

  8. The saddest - stupidest, actually - thing about this entire circus is the fact that Cardillo and friends were barking up the wrong tree and bullying the wrong people. If I'm a businessman who thinks I own X trademark and have Y rights, I'd also be doing everything I could to protect what I perceive to be my rights and ownership; however, these chuckleheads were loose cannons who flew off the handle and took immediate drastic action without thinking about the consequences of the people they would alienate.

I'm not saying Cardillo and friends are right about anything, because anything they say is highly questionable; however, they've been most foolish in how they handled the entire thing. Congrats on spraying all over the place, fellas. The wrong people were caught in the middle and you look like idiots for it; even worse, the wrong people happen to be your target audience for what endeavors - if any - you have in the future. Way to go!

  9. Well, yes, that's part of it. There's more. In business class I was taught to never admit mistakes in public, never answer "sticky" questions directly. Answer as if you heard a different question and reply with something neutral. It's tougher to do with the social media fad in full swing, but still doable. And don't retract anything if at all possible - makes ya'll look weak and stuff U know? Can even be an admission of guilt in a roundabout way. You can apologize and blame bad things on procedure, which you will "conveniently" look into. That kinda stuff.. Twist it around 2 months later. Be a hero and a nice guy.

Bingo. I actually enjoyed making a C.E.O. sweat in my business administration classes back in the day; he was sweating bullets and dodging my direct questions about his obvious incompetence at his company. That evening was both educational AND entertaining!

  10. ColecoTM/Cardillo has no leverage, no carrot, and no stick.

His promises of cross-promotion and the possibility of "something big" seem like just talk to me. That's no incentive. This is the person who lent his brand name to Mike "Magic Beans" Kennedy to (not) make the Coleco Chameleon, right?

He can throw around the word "prohibited," but if all he's got is the ability to harass a fan site by complaining to Facebook, that's not much to fear. Pursuing any perceived infringement could easily cost more than the tired old ColecoTM brand is worth. Cardillo drives that value down every time he writes tone-deaf demands.

Who does Cardillo think he is to make any demands of anyone? A brand custodian, but what else?

Fortunately, he seems to be waking up to the fact that he needs the community more than they need him.

It's very telling that he's unwilling to retract his complaint to Facebook. This dude is in it for money and control. If he continues this behavior, he's not going to get either.

If I were him, I'd sell off the albatross around my neck while it's still worth something. Is it worth anything?

The problem is that he's not the head turd; there's turds bigger than him in this whole thing. If I were the turds he has to answer to, I'd be furious with the way he and his fellow lackeys handled the whole thing.

Besides, no matter what value - perceived or actual - that the name/brand may have, its potential is unmet so long as trademark squatters get their grubby hands on them and do NOTHING. Alienate a fan base - your entire potential market in this instance - and you pretty much ruin the legacy and value of the brand name. Nobody in their right mind would want to deal with these people.

  11. All patents for retro game consoles (up to just prior to N64) are defunct now, which is why we see clone consoles everywhere. Nintendo sued Generation NEX in 2004 and lost because the patents to the Famicom dated back to 1983, which had already expired at the time of the lawsuit. Then Yobo and everyone else were free to make clone systems. Only very recently we have near exact replicas of the N64 controller replacements from Yobo and Hyperkin, thanks to the controller portion of the N64 patents now being expired. Certain other aspects of N64 hardware are still under patent which is why we haven't seen full clones of it yet, that and the hardware complexity being much more sophisticated than 8-bit and 16-bit hardware.

It's nice to see those clones around, because you don't exactly find a Gamecube or N64 controller lying around whenever you need one. Yobo and MadCatz to the rescue (at least years ago when I bought those controls; no idea if they still make them now).

  12. CV clones are tempting, because the original console was... eccentric, and hasn't gotten any easier to use after 35 years. That four pound power supply with three separate voltages is no fun at all to deal with, man.

(Where are the threads about these systems, anyway?)

I got my hands on an Atari 7800 a while back and haven't found out if it works yet. Part of me is afraid to plug it in because I don't know if it'll start a fire or not (boy, those 40-foot long cords sure are something to look at!).

  13. This shit is unreal; its gone way beyond the beyond and I think it warrants an actual news story about COLECO being in bed with that douchebag juice. We should reach out to Kotaku or another gaming site that posts game related news stories (sorry, was the only site I could think of off the top of my head, feel free to pick another).

Excellent idea. After all, Coleco's shady practices affect not only the community, but the Internet and industry itself.

  14.

I also like the original controller, but I can understand those who hate it

The original design is not very reliable as well

Interestingly enough, I actually do BETTER in the games with the original controller (most games, I should say). Cutting corners in Venture or Oil's Well with the original controller... no problem! I will admit that I do better in Smurf Rescue with a d-pad, however (but still good with the original).

  15. The community governs itself, but we have a wanna be dictator telling us what we can and cannot do. Cardo1 must really have great respect for outstanding gents who ranked among the greatest leaders of the world, you know, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Joseph Stalin, Fidel Castro, Saddam Hussein, Kim Jung Il / Un, et al.

Even Hitler was a better rapper (Epic Rap battles of history).
