Sounds very interesting. I really hope you get the resources you need to create your game. Have you asked at http://videopac.nl/forum/index.php ?

In case anyone else is interested in a discussion about ROM purchases there are a few more comments on the cross-post I made at the Videopac forum here:
-
This looks great! How does the O2 'scene' work typically? Do ROMS ever get released or sold?
I've never seen Odyssey ROMs for sale, but I'd love to be able to purchase them this way. I just don't have the space or money to buy all the great homebrews that come out, but I'd like to play them all and support the programmers that create these games. I'm sure there's a concern about piracy and/or devaluation of the games, but maybe waiting to release the ROMS for a period of time (like 1 or 5 years) would help mitigate those fears?

I don't remember seeing this ad, but I'd like to. I wonder if anyone has collected all of the O2 videos (which would mainly be ads)? I'd like to add this to my collect of Odyssey stuff.

I was planning on making it to MGC for this first time this year and would've loved to pick one of these up. Unfortunately an ill-timed confirmation by my oldest daughter that weekend is keeping me from attending. I got my order placed on the website, but it looks like there's quite a waiting list.

Thanks. Got an answer right away here:
tl;dr: this shouldn't be a problem with the LTO Flash (or Intellicart and CC3).

I hope you do or did get to try it over the Holidays & aren't to turned off by the random kills by the Starship or the nonsensical gun that I think puts off many a player.
Unfortunately life interfered with my best laid plans for some Odyssey gaming this Christmas (and I didn't get to play UFO). I'm not sure when I'm going to get to it now, but I will try it some day. Based on all the good reviews here I'm surprised I've overlooked this game for so long.

I didn't have UFO as a kid, but I might have to break it out over the holidays and give it a try.

I just thought of something: Ted of Tedfoolery Games found out a way to make beautiful music without the Voice on the homebrew Puzzle Piece Panic. I don't know how, he must be a genius.
Just listened to the youtube video below. Puzzle Piece Panic has is an amazing sound track.

Didn't have monkeyshines manual so I didn't know about the scene manipulation. We should give it another shot 3 player
If you didn't enjoy the 2 player version, the 3rd person on the keyboard won't save it for ya.
It's not a blast being the guy stuck on the keyboard, but it's better than being a mere spectator.-

the ones they specifically didn't like were electronic table soccer, alien invaders plus, monkeyshines, cosmic conflict, football, nimble numbers ned, I've got your number, war of nerves, and pachinko
biggest hits were turtles, killer bees, smithereens, kc munchkin and crazy chase, quest for the rings, and type and tell
the thing with the odyssey 2 is that once you use it the design decisions begin to make sense, though the terrible built in audio is definitely the low point, The use of the voice for music on turtles was really nice
I'm really surprised you didn't like Monkeyshines. IMHO it's one of the O2's more entertaining multiplayer games (nothing can top Showdown in 2100 AD for two player fun
. With Monkeyshines you can play cooperatively for high score or competitively (try to kill each other and/or get high score). It may also be the only Odyssey game that lets three players play simultaneously. With a third person on the keyboard they can try to help or hurt the players by adding or removing lines from the screen. Monkeyshines also gets bonus points for originality in both theme and game play (I'm not aware of any other game were you try to shoot each other with tagged monkeys

How does the C7030 RAMCART work?

Let me know how the solder-less AV adapter kit goes.
My solder-less AV adapter kit is working great. My sound and picture quality are great, I'm happy with this purchase.
I thought my Odyssey's existing RF cable hole was a little tight for the new AV cables, so I enlarged the hole with a 1/4" drill bit. I wish the AV adapter box's wires were longer so I could tuck the box away in the front of the Odyssey. With such short cables forcing you to keep the box in back I think the AV box keeps the Odyssey shell open just a tiny bit.

Does the VG 5000 use the same joysticks as the O2?
-
Yep, Jim, I did mean the original Odyssey...
Despite you clearly stating in the thread title what you wanted, I still managed to confuse myself because the Odyssey 2 and VCS/2600 are more comparable systems. The original Odyssey is more of a direct comparison to Pong. I think their release dates were:
- Odyssey 1972
- Pong Arcade 1972
- Pong Home 1975
- Atari 2600 1977
- Odyssey 2 1978
So if you want early video game players you may want to talk to Pong owners too. Regarding the original 1972 Odyssey I enjoyed the clip from "What's My Line" that's shown here. Having never seen a video game before they had to guess what the hosts were playing.
Is your project going to be released to the public when you're done?
-
I'm a sociologist of media doing a project on early game consoles, especially the Odyssey and VCS.I assume you're most interested in the Odyssey 2? The original Odyssey came out a few years earlier and isn't as well known.
If you want more exposure there are more Odyssey 2 (aka Videopac) fans at http://videopac.nl/forum/index.php
If you don't want to join another forum I could cross post your info over there.

I got my Retronic package yesterday. Game looks great (as you can tell from the photos in the first post). I also bought from him a solder-less AV adapter kit and two adapters that convert Odyssey2 hard wired joysticks to USB. I haven't gotten to try either of these yet as they're going to be "surprise Father's Day" gifts for me.

Everything looks very well done (game, ad, website). Very professional. Do you know if he's planning on creating an English language version of his website? Google translate works pretty well, but I don't understand the purchase options.

Interesting idea. Would this be the Odyssey's first home brew board game/video game hybrid?

And I'm sure Homer (Not Simpson) wouldn't appriciate his epic story being hijacked by the Big N either...

How true. Everyone knows Homer gave exclusive rights to Magnavox.

You can exclude terms with -, for example, "-mario" . However even that's not necessary--searching "odyssey2" just gives me Magnavox Odyssey2 stuff...
Those help, but some eBay sales only specify "Odyssey" without the 2. So it's a balancing act of how many results you want vs how much garbage you want to wade through.

Yeah, Mario complicates my eBay Odyssey searches as well.

Thanks for sharing the pics. I've got a saved search in eBay for Odyssey dustcover, but I've never seen one come up (other than this newly made one https://www.ebay.com/itm/Magnavox-Odyssey-II-Custom-Made-Dustcover-A-unique-console-deserves-this-cover/263318663792) If I search for just Odyssey cover I get too much noise.

U.F.O. - Discovering the Trick to consistently defeat the Starship
in Odyssey 2 / Videopac
Posted
I finally got to play UFO this last weekend. I agree, it is a really good/fun game. Too bad I didn't know about it when I was a kid. That starship is tough though! If you find a way to consistently beat the starship please let us know how you do it.
