I think with the Klax hand they were trying to go for a "viral/popular/signature"-type icon, like one that would be instantly-recognizable that identifies the game.

I said they were trying but they didn't succeed. I read somewhere they wanted Klax to "define the decade" which is why they had the "it is the nineties and it is time for" thing. Perhaps as "the icon for the next big hit game in the nineties" was what they're going for. Also I think it's just the hand in the shape of the letter K, as it is used to replace the letter in the title.
