Unfortunately this doesn't run on a7800x (original XBOX 7800 emulator). The screen turns green and it makes an awful racket. If I run the bin and turn off POKEY support, it runs, but silently.

Yes, the power supplies are identical.
To swap between the original 12v sound chip (SID) and the newer 9V SID only requires that you change a diode inside the unit and a couple of capacitors (if you want- it affects the filters).

My vote is for the C64!
I'm a HUGE Colecovision fan, but I'd personally suggest a Colecovision console over the Adam. While there are some cool exclusive Adam games, like Dragon's Lair, I wouldn't recommend buying one just for that.
Already own it, already hooked up. The reason I use the ADAM over the Colecovision is because it has composite out which is nice. The few ADAM exclusive games aren't worth it otherwise.

Yeah, but how do you get sound out of it that way? There is no audio output...

I can't believe this is even a remotely difficult decision to make. 100 or less games vs. 10,000?
The public decided this in 1983.

Try turning down the brightness knob in the back.

for some reason the 64k 600XL snuck in there and I'm enjoying using it.
I'd use my 600XL in a heartbeat since it's basically NIB, but it doesn't have a monitor port and there's no way I'm going back to using RF.
Tempest
the _Majority_ of 600XL motherboards have the ability to add a monitor socket easily (you just need a monitor port and a selection of resistors and capacitors - Or Best Electronics sells a kit for about $12.00). Take a look here

I've done this to Three 600XL's
I would buy this kit from them to upgrade one of my 600XL's, but I can't find it on their website. That site is about the worst thing I've ever tried to navigate since the mid 1990's.
Link?

I'm surprised anyone is really being critical of the design of the SX-64. There's not much more you could cram into a transportable computer like that screen-wise at the time, and you can still use it like a regular C-64 and have it work with a monitor or TV.In fact, it's nearly exactly the same as a real C-64, save for the cassette port, but in the US in particular that was a non-issue since we pretty much standardized on disks by the time of the SX-64's release.
They were always super-popular at "copy parties" here in the U.S.

Thanks stephen and bruce.
I tried booting some backup PSX games on the units, and the backups booted on both, so I guess that is what they would be for, should these chips also allow me to play imports?
Not necessarily- some chips send all 3 region codes, some send only one. Most of them send all three.

I've repaired a lot of those over the years and I can't recall a defective SX power supply or RAM failure, which are very common on the regular desktop models. Surprising (from Commodore) but they seem very rugged.
For whatever reason, usually the PLA and one or more of the ROM chips are the fault on the SX. You've swapped the PLA with a known good one (retest to be sure) so try swapping ROMs. The kernal is the most common failure, and can be swapped for the C64 ROM, you'll just get the blue colors instead of green/black SX. Watch the pin alignment, as it's a 28-pin on the SX and only 24 on the standard C64.
Other than that you can make sure that the boards are seated together 100%- it's a 90 degree pin/socket setup from the mainboard to the power/drive boards and that being loose can cause your symptom as well. Push on the board on the right-hand side until you can't see the pins to make sure it's tight. Good luck!

You answered your own question!

(I originally posted this is the wrong forum) I have been using a modified C128 PSU for my C64. I now have a second C64 and don't trust the original C64 PSU's, so could I add an extra plug to my C128 PSU to power my second C64?
Thanks.
Dusty
Probably not at the same time, safely. The original C64 supply is 1.5A on the +5V, and 1A for each leg of the 9VAC. The 128 has 2.5A on the +5, but still only 1A for each of the 9VAC.
I wouldn't try it due the AC draw. I'm not positive how much current the C64 draws on the 9VAC lines, but I'm sure it's not half the rating.

Game play would work fine, same controls, 4 directions, 1 button, choose one at a specific time, put the game play on a betamax tape... I had a ½" reel to reel B/W portable video recorder back then I recorded gameplay on!
An interactive game would not fit even in 128 kbytes... I pondered this way long ago, but I immediately quit it !
Yes, but the RAM problem had been solved later in the life of the 2600. Sara, CBS RAM+, etc.

Isn't there something odd about the CoCo artifacting where the colors are reversed sometimes? I seem to remember something about "restart the computer until the colors are right" on some games... Seems like Blue and Orange are reversed occasionally.

The C64 is *the* gaming machine for the early-to-mid 80's (and up to the 90's outside the USA).
-
Yes, it does that in other emulators as well. I just use Altirra now and no problems at all. It's a nicer emulator, and still updated.

OK, I give up. What does it mean?

This gentleman named Ira Goldklang maintains a great site and has been very helpful to me. He's got books, disks, whatever you need (if he happens to have extras at the time) and is usually willing to part with stuff for the cost of shipping plus a 'donation' to his site:
...the arcade type games are absolutely hilarious. Donkey Kong, Berzerk, Scramble, Frogger, Defender - they're so cool for what they are. I also enjoy the text adventures for the system. Great keyboard and classic b/w screen. This was the first computer I ever touched as our Junior High-School had a full lab full of 'em.
Some of the games are really amazing for this system even with the limited hardware. There is a game that is like "House of the Dead" (13 Ghosts?) with parallax scrolling and everything. Really amazing what some people did back then!

Yes... my Vectrex! I own two and both don't work for **it. One the screen flips out of control, the other the screen is off center and flicker is bad. I'm just about to throw in the towel and destroy both with a sledge hammer to put them out of their misery. I wouldn't want to sell them and then have another poor gamer go through the agony I've been going through. *sigh*
It takes a lot of work, but new cap kits and complete solder reflows will fix most problems like this with the Vectrex.

If this one comes to fruition, the logical next step would probably be Battlezone.
Relatively low on the vector count, plus the computer version is crap so it would be welcome with open arms.
Battlezone had a "mathbox" (bitslicer) add-on to calculate the 3-D effect. I would imagine that would slow you way down...

Really nice hack. My only comment is that the Ms. Pac-Man "siren" sounds more like the sound that regular "Pac-Man" should play during the power-pellet timeout.

Somebody mentioned the lack of a Harmony cart for the 7800, but with a little electronics experience, you can make your own SRAM cart that works with the DevOS.
Does anyone make these carts for people one-off? I've made the simple 32k version, but would like the bigger bank-switched one.
-
Probably too high starting price, but I can understand not bothering to sell it if you can't get what it's worth "to you".

My general rule is that if it only sells for what I would pay for it again, then I won't bother.

Same thing happened to me many times. I've got several broken Ataris, broken TI's, broken Apple II's, and broken Commodore's this way. People are just stupid and think that if it's in a box it's fine. You can only get your money back under ridiculous circumstances so it isn't worth trying.
The best is when they say to take it to the post office because it's their problem. It's not.

Usually it's much worse and they pile heavy power supplies, disk drives, books on it and bust off all the keys also. Harder for that to happen to a 400, but still.

Surprise! Donkey Kong with Pokey sound

Is it because it's accessing the POKEY at a non-standard address instead of like a real POKEY cart?
