Mine works fine. I've read and programmed dozens of old ROMs without a problem. It took me a bit to realize you have to change all those jumper settings to match the photo in the software for the device you are programming.

One thing to check if you have a bad picture in RF. On both of my TV's, I have to set the TV/Cable setting to TV to get a good RF picture. I believe the tuner treats cable mode differently (altered tuning profile or maybe less bandwidth for each channel). Anyway, it helps clear mine up and I thought it was strange when I ran across it.

The uIEC is inexpensive ($50-75) but it is not a 1541 emulator. As you already know, many titles have fastloaders that depend on 100% 1541 compatibility since the built-in DOS was very slow on the C64. Not all of them, though. You can find many cracked copies of these games that will run from the uIEC, but it takes some work.
It's best just to get a C64 with a fastload cart or JiffyDOS, a 1541, and an XA1541 cable so you can make your own floppies- that way you get that extra step of nostalgia from using the old floppies as well and play the games as they were intended. I find with a uIEC being a giant "multi-cart", it's easier to get the "short attention span" routine going anyway.

I don't think you can write back to images with the unregistered version normally, can you? It seems like that's a feature of the full version.

I think it's the same as a 5-pin MIDI cable used in audio gear. That doesn't make them much more easy to find, though.

Most of the stuff floating around, such as TOSEC, should be NTSC versions. I don't think there was a large PAL following for the Atari like there was for the Commodore stuff.

Forget the high BINs- they are just trying to catch n00bs. When left out to bid, they go for cheap. Make sure to get one that works and ask questions about the screen, as most are dead or dying.
I searched complete listings and a full boxed working one went for $37 and another for $25 recently. Not outrageous at all.

People always do that on the Craigslist ads I've answered. You've got to call and go there NOW when the ad is listed to get the good deals.
I bought a guitar amp recently and the guy was acting like he wanted to raise his offering price because he "got so many calls" about it after mine. It was broken and needs repair (which of course wasn't mentioned- he said it worked great) but it was still a good deal at the original price.

So you got it to work or not? I tried on the 400 which shouldn't need the translator disk.

Don't get me wrong- I'm not defending import fees or VAT or any type of tax or government interference! I just mention that it's difficult to complain if you're being dishonest in any way. It sounds like that is not the case and what you are shipping is actually "worth" very little, so there is no reason to put it in as gift and that's what they don't like. They don't understand why you are paying more for shipping than the product is "worth".
I've sent things overseas plenty of times (where the shipping was 4x the value, probably like yours) I always just put "old floppy disks" or "computer software". What I run into is buyers for more expensive items that want you to claim it for $10 as a gift. The problem with that is you can't insure it for the full value, because they won't insure for more than the declaration. It sucks to have to do it, but almost everyone overseas charges a fortune to ship to the USA, so it isn't like they don't know the true costs.

Are you really sending stuff worth only $1 or $5 or are you falsifying the records? You do realize that is a crime and you are in fact defrauding customs?
Just claim what is really in there with the value and you probably won't have the problems. On the other end, they may have to pay a VAT, but that is their problem, not yours. It isn't your job to defraud their government by committing mail fraud, and state that in the auction.

It does the same on my oldest Atari 400. Interestingly, the colors are different when run on a 400. Is it really normal to have completely different colors across different Atari computers? Didn't that cause strange issues with game design?

It also does it on Atari800WinPlus 4.1, so the emulation is "accurate".

Yes, the version on AtariMania (and a few other versions I tried- they seem to be all the same release) does this for me, also. I am using a stock 800XL with APE.

I always enjoyed the APX titles, my favourites were Dog Daze by Gray Chang (great fun with two players!) and Galahad, although my repeat player nowadays is the excellent Gauntlet-based Dandy by John H.Palevich. Was Hollywood Medieval an APX release?

USPS insurance is not for this sort of thing unless the box was damaged, and even then, only if it was packed to their specifications and damaged.
That looks like it has some loose connections inside you'll need to repair.

4464 RAM (4 bit x 64K) (150ns or faster) is apparently what I need. If someone could sell me two of these chips for a decent price, that would be great!
Update: I got the RAM chips I need, but they hold their data after power off. I apparently need older chips that lose everything quickly after a cold boot. I am a still looking for these RAM chips, but they need to be somewhat old. The older, the better.
I have a few things in my trade box I could trade, but it's mostly random stuff that I doubt anyone will want.

All my XL's (800xl and 600xl) don't reset if you flick the power supply on/off quickly. I usually have to count to 3 or so before turning back on. This is normal... It's something about the power supply design on those boards.

What are you guys using for modern OS's. Atari800WinPlus 4.0 and 4.1 have screwed up colors in full-screen mode for me, and Atari800 SDL version complains about something video related. Both work fine in Windows XP for me on the same PC.

I've got one that does this and it changes when I wiggle the RF output socket. I think mine has bad solder joints on the board, for sure.
