Stupid Things You Hear Collectors Say
EdwardK replied to MotoRacer's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Maybe it's the area I grew up in then, because down here, I never noticed a heavy Nintendo leaning. Hell, I had played on two master systems at friends houses before I ever saw a Nintendo outside of a store shelf. Still don't think that the lockout chip violates any laws here in the US. Edited to add: Meanwhile, I just noticed that these whole off topic rants we've been on for this thread are technically on topic. Thus I hereby nominate everything I have added to this discussion so far as Stupid Things Collectors Say. -

I'm still not convinced that Nintendo had a monopoly in the US. They had superior quality control, better marketing and a nice game library when other systems were already losing popularity in the US and starting to show their age. Meanwhile, they tried to shut down the Game Genie, and failed in US court. None of this seems to support your monopoly theory. -
By the way, if the av mod doesn't work out, I've got a 4 switch 2600 board sitting on my entertainment system right now that you can have. You'd just have to cover shipping. Had another thought, have you checked the connection on that RCA type plug that goes into the RF adapter? Might have gotten the funk of time on it, and the added resistance is knocking down the signal strength

LOL!! Age estimate, and whats the probability that there is a basement involved? Back on the NES lockout chip thing, How is that any different than Sony denying porn companies to sell their product on Betamax? And back to stupid things you hear collectors say, "I only stick with the classic systems, like PS1 and Nintendo 64." No joke, just heard that today. -
Looking for a SNES . . . . What Option Should I Choose?
EdwardK replied to wongojack's topic in Classic Console Discussion
You can get an original SNES on amazon(of all places) for about the cost of most of the clones and probably find a used one at a thrift store/garage sale or even craigslist for less. Don't really see the point in one of the clones unless you're trying to save space and emulate multiple systems or have some debilitating hatred toward RCA plugs. -
This is going to sound stupid, but are you on the right channel? Mine used to look like that on an old tv I used to have if i didn't turn the dial far enough to hit channel 3.

Do you have any sources for this? Never heard this one and would like to look into it out of curiosity. Not trying to say you're just pulling that one out of left field, it just sounds so strange to me that I feel the urge to know more and particularly why. -
had that happen on cartridges(more frequently with non atari carts without the little trap door) that were badly worn or needed a cleaning. Cleaning the contacts on the cartridge or adjusting the way it's seated in the systems cartridge slot might clear that up for you. Worth a try atleast.

Per my perspective, the only thing that Nintendo did that could possibly be construed as "saving the game industry", atleast here in the US, was they had tighter quality control on the games for their system. Had Atari/Mattel/Coleco etc had the same, the crash might not have occurred. Think about it. What was the percentage of games for the Nintendo vs games for the Atari VCS that were complete and utter crap? Had any company done the same at the same time and advertised like Nintendo did (speaking for the US here still) they too would have outsold their competition by similar margins and everyone would claim that they saved video games. And now i've probably just started a NES vs the world flame war, and won the title for dumbest thing said by a collector at the same time. Also, recently got told "Why would you ever use the RF adapter for your Sega Genesis? Seriously, it looks horrible" To which i replied, "because it's the cable I have and it looks good enough to me". That guy might have me edged out for dumbest thing ever said by a collector. -
What happens to your collection after you die?
EdwardK replied to Master Phruby's topic in Show Us Your Collection!
My stepson will probably keep most of it. If his sister ended up with it she'd probably sell it at a yard sale for $40. Just being realistic. -

For me laserdisc wasn't really about any superiority over any other format. More about just hating to buy my movies over again because a new format is out. As far as i'm concerned, if it's watchable to me, it's good and I'll replace it with a different format when it's not. Also they make amazing conversation pieces. Got my copy of Flash Gordon signed yesterday. Meanwhile, Sam Jones is freaking tall. Anyhow, back on topic, i'm sure a collector somewhere will say that I ruined the value of the laserdisc because there is writing on the case now. I like it that way, and if i ever meet a designer of a game i like, i'll have them sign that too. -

As someone who loves laserdisc, they were only barely alive to begin with. Honestly they were impossible to find down here (with the exception of online or random garage sales) long before DVD hit the market. Still have alot of love for laserdisc. the stepkids scratch the hell out of my DVD's (still not sure, it goes from the case, to the player, then back to the case, how does it manage to get ripped up?) but they're afraid to touch the laserdisc for whatever reason. Gotta love stuff the stepkids are afraid to destroy. -
Kinda makes me wonder of all the release variations, how many have errors

King of Fighters Evolution on the Dreamcast (Ikari Warriors Team for the win ) Galaga on Game Boy Micro (Namco Museum Cartridge) The Punisher on a Sega Genesis emulator on a computer at work (don't tell the boss)

I'm going to call BS on those media meeting the expected life spans. I have some very early release CD's that are no longer playable, and sadly one side of my Raiders of the Lost Ark Laserdisc is starting to degrade. Among other people who have similarly aged CD's and Laserdisc, this is not a unique issue. I also have some VHS from the 80's that still play as good today as they did then and others that play like trash, all kept in the same storage conditions. What I take from all of this is that it was all luck of the draw on what came from the factories. Life expectancy for electronics per my experience is just a claim to sell product and nothing more. Not trying to convince you that VHS is some gift from the gods, just saying the life expectancy thing has per my expierence(and i'm pretty sure plenty of other people) is not as set in stone as people would have you believe. Now if you want to hate on anything about VHS, I won't argue with any complaints about the video quality being well under current formats, and how it's especially noticeable on modern TV's.(Disclaimer: this is all relative to the typical, most commonly found playback setups. I know there is bound to be someone on this forum, possibly in this debate [that is well removed from the topic of this thread by the way] that have a system that would blow this claim out of the water. I'm talking about the set up that most people will possibly still have) -
Not sure what year mine is, or if it's the color you're referencing due to being colorblind. (for all i know, this could be orange, but the red washes out for me) But mine definitely says paddles. Sorry about the photo quality. Only camera I have is a flipphone from 2006.

I'm with you, says the white guy with non-existent credit and 0 credit cards. -
I liked the Sega Genesis version pretty well. But then again, I was playing it during the days of the Sega Channel, and I tended to like every game i played back then. Probably because I didn't have to camp the video store to rent a copy. This one I did, but even then, Video Central had 0 competition to get your hands on this game, probably because everyone probably already had the NES version

"Atari ET is the worst game ever" I can think of plenty of worse games. -
since others have mentioned their naming schemes for their computers, Thought I'd also add, in addition to rig, I also use Deck when referring to mobile computers(also derived from Shadowrun) As for naming individual pc's I typically name them based on model number, last 3 of their IP address (when i was running way to many computers) or nicknames based on use or construction method. At this point, all of my hardware is definitely outdated, but of the ones still in service their names are as follows, Infowhore(computer used strictly for file storage, basically a cobbled together NAS), Minibox(HTPC in the microITX form factor) Lapdeck(network name for the laptop, think that name annoys the hell out of my wife) and Frankenstein(named because of it's construction. built from a pile of parts harvested from dead rigs) My classics, due to lack of peripherals, are kinda relegated to being overpowered game cartridge machines as of present and are referred to by model number. So basically the 99 and the 800xl(often just the 800 if it comes up in casual conversation).

Any other employees there? lol

So this will sound pretty horrible, but have you considered buying the working one with the scratches, swaping the lasers when you got home, then returning him the scratched up one with the broken laser? Just a thought.
