  1. Even if it doesn't, if the scam worked it still would damage the community. There's really no spin on this one, I'm fairly certain this guy knew what he was doing.   2. Because I'm correct, your historical distraction doesn't even have anything to do with what I said. It's completely off topic. CD-i can't play standard interactive CDs. Phillips in numerous interviews and PR positioned the CD-i as a universal interactive format specifically because no one, including them, was expecting CD-roms to be a feasible interactive medium BECAUSE it was device dependent as you said, and CD-i does interactivity differently than Standard CDs, therefore the machines were designed with this in mind. You can put an interactive standard CD in almost ANY MACHINE that has Compact Disc compatibility, and usually it will at least read the disc before telling you it can't play the content on the disc or other error messages. Cd-i machines can't even read it. Yes proprietary use of Standard interactive CDs were a thing, correct, however a device like the PlayStation, while it can't play a Sega CD game, it can still READ the disc(some CD games from other consoles can get audio pulled out in the CD player on PSX.), all I'm saying is the CD-i can't even read the disc. Nothing more than that, nothing complicated at all. Anyway I've already given my opinion on the CD-i, you may like it, I don't, I think it's best games are just CD versions of other popular titles like Flashback and maybe an FMV game or two from American Laser games, I see nothing else worth getting on it, and most of its library is more rare than a golden egg. I'm not trying to shit on the machine just to shit on it if that's what you thought. Please do not take this an attack against you my good man.

  4. PS3 never crushed the 360 in multiplats, the 360 still got the better versions the majority of the time all the way till the end. The exceptions built up later on, but most of those were games that were better tailored to Sonys cinematic playstyle, and those cinematic games were the majority of the superior multiplats to the 360. I think there were only two open-world games of any genre that looked better. While some developers were "lazy" about learning the PS3's architecture, you have to remember there were some real issues with the PS3 tools. The architecture was made for the Cell to be the primary unit for graphics and central processing, but due to the 360's surprise specs they threw in the RSX. You also have to realize that the idea when they launched the PS3, would be to assume it would work like the PS2. They expected devs to mostly focus on the PlayStation console, and so would spend most of their time trying to develop for the PS3 and ignore the 360, knowing full well it would take some time. Instead Micrsoft made development much easier than they expected right from the start, and their plan ended up backfiring. The RSX also made development harder because you had to code through the cell first and then try to get the RSX to do the work the cell couldn't and vice versa. it was meant to cover the weaknesses of the cell and in turn the cell would cover the weaknesses of the RSX, which did not work the way they expected. The real reason the PS3's weaker third-party ports didn't effect it as much the 2nd half of its life, was a combination of Sonys games not looking THAT much worse compared to the first half of its life, where differences were much larger, and the fact the Kinect was taking off. Sony's downgraded multiplats where replaced in the conversation by Microsoft chasing the Wii audience.

  9. A friend of mine had an RCA S2 and offered to sell it to me and his whole collection but I foolishly said no back in the day. Now RCA studio 2's go for ridiculous prices on Ebay.

My original post did forget to put in the extra words because I assumed people would have known what I was talking about, but my main point was that interactive CDs could not be played on CD-i because CDs at that time where still being experimented on what they could do, the CD-i was designed specifically to add a feature that many THOUGHT was not possible/feasible on regular CDs, and it turned out that CDs were more capable than Phillips thought. Nothing to do with hardware, any CD with interactive elements even if the machine playing them originally was weaker than the CD-i, could not be played for the above reason. However, you are correct that the CD-i was weak, and that's why it's best games are CD-audio enhanced ports of other popular titles like Flashback or FMV games. Phillips though the finalized specs in 89 would be fine for a few years and they were gravely mistaken. In 2018 there's really nothing there unless you want to collect for historical reasons. Most of the Movie/Music software is impossible to find, and half the gaming software is also very hard to find. Then you have the issue that there's only 5 or so models that you'll commonly find in online stores and there's really not much to collect for it. If you're in Europe you might find a few extra things but you'll generally still face the same problems. I'd say half of the CD-i's existence is erased from history already outside those who got stuff on day 1, all 5 of those people.

    The mistakes with the ST and the lack of management for the 8-bit line in the later years really made me wonder if Atari should have just went the "gaming computer" route instead of trying to be an all and one consumer/business computer like Commodore was trying (and failing) to do. Jack's name was already poison and it was getting worse every year. Same with Sam. Jack era 8-bit, ST and Falcon were all disasters, as was late jack era commodore, and the stain never left. Everything they touched turned to crap. If new management at Commodore threw away his legacy then it may have just survived a bit longer. Now that I think about it, IBM should have brought in Jack to kill the PC clones

  13. I agree half-way. Remember, the market is different now, if someone sees a high price for a homebrew, or a remade classic game, like my combat example before, people who aren't Atari/Intv collectors might buy it just to sell it at a premium TO Atari/Intv collectors, and those guys raise the prices up significantly as well. If the sellers are buying high and selling at the same price or higher, than it may be one collector may have no choice but to pay the premium to get that game. Some don't have the patience to wait for the prices to drop, buyer or seller.

    If they learned their lessons the jagur would not have been bugged, and they would have spend most of their budget getting Jaguars at thousands of retailers instead of ads and false promises to trick devs on board. The ST was poorly handled, and what really hurt it was Atari giving games away in packs which pissed off developers even more. But yeah, Atari was well known to promise something and either cut features out or release a completely different product. ST had good MIDI tools but that "Upgrade" to those tools ended up being a cut down version for entry level,but sold it at full price.

  16. CD-i can't play interactive CDs unless they are CD-i's, only Audio and Video. Many YouTube videos on the specifications. But it's not really relevant as both the Sega CD and the CD-i don't have many games worth playing. Especially in retrospect now that we have the best games between the two re-released on better hardware. All 10 of them.
  17. For collectors sake, I seek a Hyperscan gaming console + library. I missed the boat on getting one back when my local Radioshack was still open and completely forgot about it for years. Finding a complete console with all software titles at a reasonable price has been a challenge!

So those who thought they may include apps or anything like that (like earlier in this thread) will likely be disappointed. Seems to be just hardware with built-in games This also means additional games won't be added either, so whatever we get is what we will get. No info about an SD card slot so looks like modders can't get to the emulator either as a work around.
  19. Has Alpha Mission 1 and 2 ever been in the same compilation? I remember SNK Classics vol.1 was like the 5th compilation where Alpha Mission 2 was included but not Alpha Mission 1 (also they cancelled that series and never made a vol.2)
  20. ColecoVision: Turbo Chuck Norris Frenzy Dragonfire Turbo is a damn impressive game on the Coleco and has held up better than I thought it would. The huge buildings, the day/night cycle, and the attempt to create an illusions that cars were at the bottom of a hill.

    Further focus on the Lynx and launching the jaguar with the PSX in 95 is likely the only scenario i can see where Atari could have had enough time to get enough games, and produce enough Jaguar to be sold at retail. The Lynx is by far Ataris second best selling console, and they should have put a lot more focus on it. But I am curios how the Tramiels managed to mess up twice. It's almost like they learned zero lessons after Commodore and the St, the Falcon was just a basket of false promises.

  23. It's hard to release a service and be in "third place" when BC/GWG came out before the Switch did. Now that I think about it how is MS in "third place?" The 8th gen console was the Wii U, that's third place, Xbox One is second, and even if you did want to pretend the Wii U doesn't count because...........reasons, the Switch hasn't passed the Xbox one either...yet. But I agree with the rest of your post though, it's all about the money.

    Well most info points to it being stronger than the SNES. Personally I never understood the debate about whether killing it was a mistake. I mean maybe the Panther might have sold slightly more than the Jaguar but not by much. If you look at Jaguar games like AVP, AVP was selling great! People were buying Jaguars for it, but Atari could not produce enough Jaguars or Carts to take advantage of that so it was nothing more than a blip. Even if the Panther was released, i don't think that would have changed much of anything, they still would have discontinued the ST, the 8-bit computers, the 2600/7800 by 92 and the Falcon still would have failed. So Atari still would have been broke and with that, I don't believe they could have produced enough Panther units for it to be competitive. They'd have to sell it through thousands of retail outlets while also producing thousands of cartridges.
  25. Sony has made many odd moves impacting their nostalgia appeal, and that started when the PS3 discontinued PS1/PS2 BC and continues till this day. I doubt the minis going to help with this, in fact i don't see this increasing nostalgia appeal at all honestly. It would have been cheaper, and faster, to copy Microsoft and use a similar BC strategy with the PSX. In fact, it's something Sony would have the advantage in since they already have many PSX game licensees through contract permissions and through their store(PSN), so they would be able to add PSX games 5x faster than Microsoft with Xbox 1 games. This leads me to assume that they rushed this out to jump on the money train. For example, if they used a MS like BC strategy, the first 4 crash games out of 5 would be immediately available because they already have the publishing rights for those games for resale individually. Same Applies to all 3 spyro games, FF7 and FF8, two of the Toshinden games, 2 of the Tekkens, A bunch of Namco games, including 2 of the Museums, and so on. The Third-party agreements they already have would bring in many more games, very quickly. For MS, not only do they need third-party permission but in certain cases, usually with more demanding games, they have to do some engineering to get the game to run smoothly. Sony wouldn't have this problem using the same strategy, the PSX is weak and isn't heavily customized like the Xbox 1, and the PS3 already showed they can enhance PSX games marginally on PS3 by default. So adding a further resolutions and clarity boost on PS4 would be simple. They could bring in 5, maybe 8x more games than Microsoft and beat MS at their own game, at least for their first consoles, MS would still win on 360/PS3 due to the Cell. But can you imagine your Tekken 3 or Crash games working on the PS4 with your original disc or having a low priced downloadable version for purchase? Now I know some people don't mind, It's just I personally don't like this type of strategy. Still, I'll be keeping an eye on it, want to see what the other 16 games are, and If I run into it on the cheap a year from now I might get it for collectors sake since it is officially produced.
