I never wrote an article about Skateboardin' Al Backiel and Mark Androvich did an article for the 2600 Connection, and Mark Marrese did a complete set of screen shots for it. You can find links to both on the DP Easter Egg entry for it (below).

As is stands, Merlins Walls is the only game designed for this. Yeah, turning your TV set sideways for one game is inconvenient/impossible, but if you have a smaller set (19" or smaller) then it's worth it. Besides, the newer versions of Z26 have an option to turn the screen 90 degress (to the left). Although arcades have long abandoned the format, I wish more people would take advantage of it. I'm surprised Ebivision never adapted a version of their Pac-Man - besides the problem of implementing the scoring counter, a simple change to the maze layout would give you the arcade dimensions. The Vectrex would be the PERFECT system to use this technique, but yet nobody has... There are existing games that are as good or better in this format, mainly "horizontal" driving games (Grand Prix, Traffic) and shooters (Vanguard, Laser Blast). Some games, like Yars or Dodge 'Em, can be played in either format, and even sort of become a "new" game since you have to relearn how to implement some of your strategies. Technically, I don't know if it'd be possible to make a new Space-Invaders-type game that took advantage of this, but it would be awesome. Even making a modified version of Grand Prix would be great, either to use paddle controls (for accurate steering control), or going further so that it more closely resembled it's arcade inspiration- Monaco GP (a favorite of mine, to which a home version has never been made. Even MAME doesn't support it...and may never). What are your thoughts on this?

It'd be cool to have, but how many people would really use/want the 2-player mode? I think FireOne was superior to SWII, as far as having a 2-player Sea Wolf-type game. The Atari 8-bit version is (visually) much better than the arcade version! If it's possible to make the 2600 version look as good, that would be amazing. Btw, everyone forgets that Air-Sea Battle isn't the only Sea Wolf-type game for the VCS.......IMHO Submarine Commander is an excellent version, which always seems to be overlooked (btw Al, the screen shots for it aren't coming up).

Manuel: What's wrong with the original? The only differences with Sea Wolf II were that it was in color, and the option of having 2 players play at the same time (would that be possible?). What if the look (and play?) of both could be incorporated - putting the TV switch to b&w would give you the look of the original (actually, black and blue, since SW used a blue overlay) Rob: I believe you're thinking about Sea Raider, which came out a year or two before Sea Wolf. AFAIK, there wasn't any 4K version. Brad Stewart mentioned in my interview (http://digitalpress.5u.com/archives/arc00120.htm) that he and Bob Smith tried to squeeze it down to 4K, but couldn't. The other notable difference I've found between the 2 versions is if tested with a Promblaster (cart copier) unit, the one with the title screen shows as a 4K cart!

Regardless whether or not she's married, this game was shown at the CGE2K.....over 2 years ago. Sorry, but she needs a better excuse (several, in fact) to cover her backside on this one. Not to mention sticking people like Len, who have legal contracts with her.

Hacking the monster and bonus graphics wouldn't be hard, but making the maze disappear or one of the monsters indifferent to the power pills could be difficult...

Mike: I don't think it was "officially", but I'm guess that the fact that you got yours from Odd Lots probably just means that whatever Atari had left in stock (that they didn't sell through the club) got dumped onto the retail market with all their other games.

There's only 4 AA exclusive titles: Atari Video Cube Crazy Climber Gravitar Quadrun Matty has it right. Atari Video Cube was an AA exclusive, and later released (to the public) as Rubik's Cube. It was never available through AA as Rubik's Cube. Gravitar was the only other title I believe that was later released to the public (years later). Swordquest Waterworld was not an exclusive title.

I spoke with one of the contest finalists a few months ago (there's a small article in the current issue of the 2600 Connection). He mentioned there were 10 people who managed to max the score out on the original Atlantis, so Imagic made each of them a special version ("Atlantis II") and held a playoff to determine the winner. So at least 10 were made.

Single-chip 2600 JRs were made? Wow, that's pretty neat. Wouldn't it then be easier to just copy that chip?
